The Detestable Mr. Hyde Hyde is a man of pure evil. The book states that “He is not easy to describe. There is something wrong with his appearance; something displeasing, something downright detestable.” He has specific qualities that make Utterson hate him. The story of Hyde running over a little girl is told in the first chapter. The reader is interested in Hyde because of his wickedness.
