There are many themes in this book such as teamwork, humanity, there is a silver lining in every storm, and no matter how bad things are everything will turn out okay, and the other theme is it is hard to tell who is the antagonist and who is the protagonist in the book. However the three most important are those that were just mentioned which are Thomas, Teresa, and the organization known as WICKED. The reason that all of these themes are important is that they share something in common with one another. Such as humanity and teamwork humans are one of the few creatures on this world that will work together to accomplish something. The other two also share that no matter how hard things get there's always been a way out of it.The next four paragraphs are meant to show how each one of the themes no matter how different they are, they each hold a little in common with each other. …show more content…
One of the many themes for the book “The Death Cure” is teamwork.
In the book when the world is introduced to a man-made virus, it is quickly spreading because it is airborne and people don't care for the new virus. For the best interest of the world, WICKED and the human population have to learn to work together. WICKED (World In Catastrophe Killzone Experiment Department)an organization made to find the cure for the flare. First, they have to learn to appreciate their unique traits. This is why WICKED had agreed to help find a cure for the Flare. James Dashner explains “ You're a member of an extremely rare group of people. You're immune to the flare”(10). They end up working together, but could not find a cure for the Flare so they send the immune ones to a secure location that WICKED has build so that they can create a new civilization for the human race to live on. This is also talks about the next theme
humanity. In the book being a human once you are told that you have the Flare you are set as an individual. Consider the Crank Palace it is a place made out of kindness for those who are infected with the Flare to live in comfort till they lose there mind but it is a place that in no way is comfortable to the infected. As the infected stay there longer they know they will soon lose what little humanity they have left. The infected would rather take their own live thant to become on the monster that everybody is afraid of. The theme of the book The Death Cure is if you work or try your hardest things will be all right. For example when WICKED try to stop Thomas from escaping Thomas never gave up and kept fighting against WICKED and he had help from his friends to fight off the organization known as WICKED. Another example is when they were forced to get a chip removed from their brains and they escaped with the help of one of their friends by knocking out the guards. That example showed how they worked together and worked hard on how to escape the WICKEDs lab room . Or another theme of the book could be that every storm has a silver lining. An example of this is that no matter how many horrible things WICKED did to them they stayed together as friends and at the end it all turned out good. One of the horrible things that WICKED did was put them through the scorch trial and had to survive in the heat and the infected people. Both of this themes help one and the other for example one of the themes is their is a silver lining in every storm is almost the same as if you work hard everything will be okay. Good and evil are usually opposites of each other and in the book neither fit in the these part in the book. Because they are both so well mixed together that the reader can't tell which one is which. There are too many characters involved in the book that it is hard to tell who is a protagonist and who is an antagonist. Such as how Thomas has mistrusting issues toward WICKED whether he is part of them or not. All though Jason desire to find a cure it's a good covered for how many deaths he is responsible for which is why he is consider to be evil. Thomas despite being the main character can he truly be considered a good character after he is so self centered through the book.He was also a part of WICKED at one time. Good and evil aren't always defined so clearly. Again the theme of humanity is shown in this theme as well. As written all the themes are connected in some way.
The major themes of the book are directly related to the themes which John Demos uses to tell this story. The storyline moves on though the evolution of one theme to the next. The function of these major sections is to allow the reader to relate to John Williams overall state of mind as the story unfold. By implementing these major themes into his work, John Demos make it possible for the reader to fully understand the story from beginning to end.
14. Was the theme implicit or explicit? Explain. I would say that the theme is implicit because the author never really comes out and says it, but rather it is hinted. The last chapter of part three is a more obvious way of saying the theme is guilt, but the author does not say it and so the reader has to infer. When Hannah commits suicide, it was most likely because she could not live with the guilt of what she had been apart of. When she tells Michael she has learned how to read, we can infer she was referring to how she had now read everything that had gone on during the Holocaust.
These three major themes which were appearance vs reality, the importance of free thought, and man vs. society were revealed throughout the book in many different scenes, and through many different characters. These major themes gave us a better understanding of the book and the characters of the book, and what some of them wanted to achieve.
The story symbolizes character’s in different way that can be interpreted to analyze. Harry Ashfield, a 5 year old kid, dies in a tragic way where his belief and faith lead him to what seemed a pointless death. His literally taking of Bevel Summers words lead him to God, where he wanted to be after living a life so empty and concerning The story represents actions and events that help us visualize what each character symbolizes, to conclude to a characters faith, belief, and weakness/strengths. Flannery O Connor helps us to connect with the story and possibly think about how are religion or beliefs affected us towards conflicts. Having personal connection is our main focus and the characters in the story may represent us or something in our lives.
One of the occurring themes is of bravery. The Walls children face adversity when moving from place to place, dealing with bullies and their father goes into an alcohol induced rage. “Brian, Maureen, Lori and I got into more fights than most kids.” Walls tells the readers on page 164. The kids had to learn to stand up for themselves in a harsh community; they had to be brave. Walls also used the theme of forgiveness to teach about the importance of forgiving those who wronged you. Her parents constantly ignored their children’s needs and mistreated them, but in the end they were forgiven for all of that and they were a regular family. “We raised our glasses. I could almost hear Dad chuckling at Mom’s comment in the way he did when he was truly enjoying something.” (Walls 288). The purpose of this comment is to wrap up the story, but it also shows forgiveness and growth. By the end of the book all was forgiven, the neglect, the stealing, the cheating and the lying, and they were family. These themes in the book are an overarching device that is a great tool to show the moral or lesson of the certain story.
The universal themes that are used in the story are racism and better the young.”And mothers and fathers, if it is too late for you, think of your children. Make it safe so they don't have to run away, for I want for you and your children what I had.”( Baker, 83) These themes are universal because both talk about things that has happened multiple times. Like better the young. We want the young to be the greatest generation and not make the mistakes we had made. The children of each generation need to be better than the last generations. The other theme racism. Racism was back then and it is now. The theme talks about the racism in the past and in the present and in the future. Racism will be the theme for lots of things in the present but also
A theme within this novel is the loss of innocence. The existence of civilization allows man to remain innocent, therefore when the characters lost their innocence, the civilization was gone or corrupt. One example of the loss of innocence would be when Jack was unable to stab the pig during the hunt. At that moment, he lost his innocence which enabled him to kill without a recollection of civilization. Another example of the loss of innocence was when Roger was throwing stones and rocks at the other children below him. Roger was unable to actually hit them purposely because he still had his innocence, but this moment was the beginning of his inability of understanding human nature.
People are entitled to their own opinions, sometimes they think that something is beneficial for a person; however, according to other people it might not be. In “The Death Treatment”, some of Godelieva’s doctors thought that they are helping her to end her agony, and decided to assist her suicide. They believed that there was nothing else they could do to treat her and decided to assist her suicide. In my opinion, the doctors didn’t do everything in their power to help Godelieva; instead, they influenced her decision to do euthanasia by putting their views on her and this is the reason I believe that she should not have been euthanized. There were more treatments available to treat her depression rather than doing euthanasia.
The one of the main themes in the epilogue, and in the entire novel is
As a suffering person, ill and in excruciating pain, would you like to continue enduring the pain in your life in extreme agony? Or would you rather rest and bring your life to a painless close? Every country is the home to sick people. Some live every day in excruciating pain, while others can’t do anything without assistance. For many, living in pain and not being able to do anything on their own is no way of living; and want to die to rest and put an end in their suffering. In many countries, this method is called Euthanasia, but is often referred to as assisted suicide. Unbelievably, in many countries around the world including Canada, euthanasia is illegal. Human euthanasia shouldn’t be illegal in Canada and should depend solely on the individual not the government of Canada. Two reasons why euthanasia should be legal in Canada are: Many people believe that ill people, debilitated for life and in torturous pain basically live no life and suffer every hour, day, minute and second they live. The second reason is that the law in Canada considers euthanasia to be manslaughter as seen in the following quote, “One might expect euthanasia to be prosecuted as first-degree murder, because there is intent to cause death, which is the definition of murder, and the act is most often planned and deliberate, which is the definition of first-degree murder.” Euthanasia is simply a way to end a person’s agony, but should only be done if the individual specifically asks for it to be done.
A recent poll founded by the Canadian Medical Association found that “only one in five doctors surveyed. . . said they would be willing to perform euthanasia if the practice were legalized. . . Twice as many – 42 percent – said they would refuse to do so” (Kirkey 1). Euthanasia is defined as giving a patient the right to die early with a physician’s assistance, and the legalization of this practice is being considered by lawmakers in many countries, including the United States. Accordingly, 42 percent of doctors in Canada are on the right side of this debate. Euthanasia should not be legalized because it violates society’s views that life is sacred, creates economic pressure for doctors, and for those countries that have legalized it, their laws are not specific enough to fully protect patients.
The famous dystopian novel, Brave New World by well recognized author Aldous Huxley is a very accurate description of society today. This novel was banned in many Countries, including Ireland and Australia in 1932 for good reason. This novel has many debatable motifs, one of the most underlying motifs is the painless killing of a patient suffering from an incurable and painful disease or in an irreversible coma, or euthanasia. In this dystopian novel, Aldous Huxley creates a world called the World State. In the World State, people use Euthanasia for anyone who is no longer useful to the society. At 60 years old, people are no longer of use to society. In Brave New World, everyone undergoes “mental euthanasia,” because they are constantly fed
There are many themes that occur and can be interpreted differently throughout the novel. The three main themes that stand out most are healing, communication, and relationships.
The main theme which is presented throughout the novel is optimism. Out of every unfortunate situation in the story, Candide, the main character, has been advised by his philosopher-teacher that everything in the world happens for the better, because "Private misfortunes contribute to the general good, so that the more private misfortunes there are, the more we find that all is well" (Voltaire, p. 31). Pangloss, the philosopher, tries to defend his theories by determining the positive from the negative situations and by showing that misfortunes bring some privileges. As Candide grows up, whenever something unfortunate happens, Pangloss would turn the situation around, bringing out the good in it. Candide learns that optimism is "The passion for maintaining that all is right when all goes wrong " (Voltaire, p.86).
Assisted suicide is a very controversial topic in American society that must be dealt with. In assisted suicide, a patient who is terminally ill requests the doctor to administer a lethal dose of medication to end his life. Assisted suicide brings up many moral and legal issues regarding the right of a patient to die with respect and the duties of a doctor. This issue is divided among people who believe that doctor assisted suicide is illegal and immoral and those who believe that suicide is a right that people have. Doctors who aid a patient to commit suicide are performing an illegal act and should be penalized to the full extent of the law.
