The Dawning of Realism stage is a vital stage in development for children as it is the initial groundwork for peer relations and influences their social interaction skills even as adults. It is also characteristic for children to begin to withdrawal from adults at this age and they may even be hesitant to share their artwork with their teachers in fear of negative criticism. As educators it is vital to approach and evaluate work at this age from a child’s point of view. This is because, as mentioned by Autumn, openly criticizing artwork in front of peers can become detrimental to a child’s self-esteem. The Language of Art by Ann Pelo describes the inquiry-based studio practices in early childhood settings. When I started to read chapter six I traced a lot of words ,as going through the few pages I came across this word called “children’s pursuits” at the very beginning of the first question of how do we grow a culture of inquiry (Pelo,2007,p.109) . I choose this word because it is challenging for me during my first practicum placement, illustrates the heart of this chapter and guides me as an Educator to facilitate my learning for future preparation. . During the observation for this stage, I worked with a child I will call Joe, he is 12 years old. What I could relate to the Lowenfeld artistic stage is that the child is nonvisual because his work is based on subjective experiences. The child was very involved with his picture because he said he was drawing what he loved the most. This is also accurate with what Lowenfeld said about a nonvisual artist being involved with their work because it has a personal meaning to them. One thing that does not relate to this picture was that the child did not use any color to represent his emotion. I think this happen due to him not having time left.
For example, adolescents are often forced into therapy by their parents or school as a result of an inability to cope with stress in a socially acceptable way. Patients at this stage are too old to engage in play therapy, where therapists analyze a child’s behavior during play and when presented with toys. Also, patients acting out during adolescence are often too young to obtain the maturity to verbalize their emotions in a socially acceptable form. Art therapy is useful at this stage of development because similar impulses expressed in play therapy are expressed through drawings, meanwhile not requiring verbal communication. Art therapy introduces the mature defense mechanism of sublimation to the patient, guiding them to achieve better self control as they learn to communicate their impulses through art and talking about their art. A particular form of therapy is managed in groups, and adolescents are encouraged to engage in conversation about their drawings while they are creating them. This creates an environment of low anxiety, allowing patients communicate internal conflict and disregard their normal defense mechanisms that are used to conceal these emotions. The location of the observation was at the Community Center (Early Childhood education program) at 11:00am to 12:30pm on April 15, 2014. The meaningful experiences in early childhood education can positively shape children's development. With a teacher is guidance authentic child-art activity can educate enrich young students' learning abilities, encourage positive attitudes toward other children, and more importantly, learn to interact with people around them in the contemporary world. However, art for young students often takes many diversified approaches and emphasizing questionable practices. Observation is a part of meaningful and authentic early childhood art education. Observation enriches children’s experiences in their environment, gives them motivation to study, interact with other children and follow the practices of their adult models. Moreover, they develop strategies and skills to represent objects in their environment.

A child’s drawing can tell so much about what they are thinking and feeling about their surroundings. They see things differently from adults and teens because when they are drawing or doing some sort of art they are not told that it is a “bad picture” or what ever they are doing is “not right.” They don’t have a limit upon their thoughts and ideas, but when they grow up, they do. Starting from the first day of school, they are taught about the wrong things and the right things. Human development has been a subject of interest since ancient Greece and Rome. Different approaches derive from two basic directions: the nativists` and empiricists` ones. The latter method is to regard human development as a gradual change which has been influenced by the individual`s experience .On the other hand, the former approach has found its roots in the biological structure of the human organism which considers our development as a series of stages. However, referring to human development only as continuous or gradual would produce inconsistent and insufficient understanding of the developmental process .As a result, combining ideas of both viewpoints(continuity and phases) will provide a more explicit of understanding of the developmental processes and their final aim which is to create individual`s integrity within the social norms.
