THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND Manifesting the worst of all worlds in the realm of personality lies the Dark Triad that is subject to imperial distinction albeit overlapping each other. Despite distinguished differences—narcissism or having a grandiose view of oneself, Machiavellianism as the art of being deceptive to get ahead, and psychopathy that is being considered as the social reinforcer to adhere on committing immorality—integrates into a character that exhibits selfishness, emotional coldness, duplicity, and manipulation (Furnham, Richards, & Paulhus, 2013; Paulhus, 2014; Paulhus & Williams, 2002). Concurrently, the Dark Triad of Personality possesses a firm binding force toward interpersonal behaviors with obtaining power over people …show more content…
For a long time, leadership research has primarily focused on “good” leadership and has until recently ignored the “bad” or “dark side” of leadership (Higgs, 2009). The dark side refers to negative aspects, which is characterized by a selfish orientation. This is similar to the concepts of good against evil, yin and yang, bright against dark and hero versus anti-hero—they all describe antagonistic pairs. Investigating the dark triad in the context of leadership is a promising ground of research. Also, studying the dark side of leadership can help us understand the role of leaders’ dark triad personality traits and dark leadership style; it could promote understanding in the complex field of leadership research, which for long time has only been fascinated of “good” and “idealized” leadership behaviors. The Dark Personality: What is …show more content…
For many, dark personality tends to emerge because of one’s failure to adhere on social constructs and policies that instigate a high level of stress on an individual and later result to impulses to harm oneself or others. However, to deviate from the clinical pathologies being linked to dark personality traits, it is substantial to highlight the ability of people having these behaviors to function normally and such attributions may indicate or expose effectual approaches in handling particular situations (Jones, 2014). Emotional disinhibition, sociopathic behavior, lack of empathy, and dishonesty are just few of the possible traits that are deemed to benefit people in innumerable engagements because of the exertion of self-control these can induce into one’s environment. As confirmed by Wu and LeBreton (2011), although traits that are considered as negative features in nature could be somewhat problematic and challenging, these may not deter or impede one’s day-to-day functioning (Hogan & Hogan, 2001). In a study, it was determined that the components of a dark personality could be beneficial at some very particular circumstances (Harms, Spain, & Hannah, 2011a) due to the apparent boost brought by these in an individual’s performance and leadership
Some of the most important information about psychopathy is that it is a personality disorder. These people are usually charming the way into people’s life to use and manipulate them to get what they want. These people do not have a soul of remorse for what they do because all they care about is themselves and what they can get from others. When these people using their charm they ma...

This research paper with discuss how an inherently “good” person can under the right circumstances turn “evil” and the psychological effects behind the change. To understand how a person can cross the proverbial line from good to evil; evil itself must be given a definition. The word evil has been an overarching term to describe anything from biblical aspects to natural disasters, even to describe the human condition. For this paper the human aspect of evil will be solely focused on. Oxford dictionary describes evil as “profoundly immoral and malevolent.” To understand this further the philosopher Peter Dews Author of “The idea of Evil” writes “Basic notions of offence and punishment, of transgression and forgiveness, seem to lose their grip in the face of profound, far reaching desecrations of the human. For those kinds of crimes, “evil” is still the only word we’ve got.” (12) Through this research paper Ethics of these experiments will not be discussed. Each of these experiments in present day are considered unethical however, they served their purpose in finding what psychological aspects contribute to evil in a given individual.

Psychopathy has long been labeled a personality disorder; a disorder believed to be serious enough of a threat to society to be treated using methods of sedation, incarceration, and climaxing at lobotomization. But could the worry have been that these psychopaths would just become too successful? The following analyzed documents support the hypothesis that psychopathic personality traits lead to success.

Philippe Pinel once described psychopathy as “insanity without delirium.” Meanwhile, other psychologists refer to them as “morally insane, which is considered by many pure evil” (Jones 2011). Psychopaths are psychologically classified as having a lack of remorse or shame, being pathological liars, failing to follow a life plan, relatively unresponsive in general interpersonal relations, insincere, and fail to learn from experiences (Hirstein, 2013). For years psychologists chose to push off the idea of psychopathy, as they believed it was an incurable condition that could only be worsened by therapy. Tests and studies are run often to discover the genetic trait in a psychopaths mind in an attempt to discover where it comes from and how to control it, appropriately.

In the article The Dark Triad and An Expanded Framework of Personality the authors Livia Veselka, Julie Aitken Schermer, Philip A. Vernon look at the Five-Factor Model and how it has received criticism for not being able to capture the full range of traits, particularly those of antisocial behavior. They compare the Five-Factor Model with others such the Dark Triad.
Many people have mentioned that one’s cognizance develops at the time of conception and is molded throughout a lifetime. The human mind is full of mysterious thoughts and each individual portrays unique personalities that can be haunting to some. Most people in this world have come across a sociopath or a psychopath, in some shape or form. Psychopaths and sociopaths have a tendency to lie and cheat to get what they want. This is why one must know the importance of understanding the unique personality they portray for what lies ahead. While, psychopaths and sociopaths have similar medical treatment options, psychopaths have different social relationships and criminal behavior.
Personality can affect many things in a person’s life. This includes how a person will react to a situation. One can attribute different personality traits to different dispositional or learning theories, such as linking the dehumanizing of a victim to social cognitive theory. One can make an association between interpersonal relational aspects and some of these theories. Personality is an aspect of the self that people often think about but most never truly contemplate the meaning or depth of personality.
Criminal offenders are more likely to display certain narcissistic behaviors, such as low honesty and humility, a tendency for opposition and forcefulness, and a lack of empathy. These behaviors tend to increase if the criminal is a repeat offender. As we examine the article from The European Journal of Personality, we are able to note that all aspects of narcissism increase as a male goes from a non-offender, to a one time offender, to a repeat offender. The following items are from the Psychopathy Checklist. While there are (13) thirteen items, there are only (5) five which directly relate to narcissism.
