Today, students rely on social networks such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram more than they rely on food to nourish their bodies. An average Facebook user wastes over 18.5 hours a month on social networking sites. It is noticeable that the more attention students are giving these social networks, the more poorly they do in school. Younger students carelessly expose all their personal information on these social networks. Also, as these sites continue to grow so does cyber bullying. Schools that contain grades k-12 should block internet access to social networks because they have a negative impact on the academic performance of students, they make students more prone to dangers on the internet, and they are the main locations of cyber bullying.
Social networking sites frequently have a negative impact on the academic performance of students. Sanzhar Nayzabekov says in her article “Negative impact of social networking sites on academic performance of students”, found on the website Academia.edu, “Despite the fact that a relatively large number of social network sites including Facebook were initially created for learning purposes, there is some evidence that most social network site users show almost no attitudes towards finding academic information” (6). In fact, the use of these social networks often results in lower grades. For example, Naizabekov also says a large amount of Facebook users check their Facebook a significant amount of times throughout the day while updating their statuses more than 5 times per day (4). With that being said, it is quite hard for a student focusing on status updates and what’s new on the social media during class period to be focused on what is being taught in class...

During the past two decades or so, there has been very explosive development of the Internet in our everyday lives. The growing use of the Internet has let to a variety social media sites. Facebook has become an essential part of almost everyone’s life, but especially college students. According to the article “Social Networking: Boundaries and Limits” only 10-20%of facebook users are not college aged students (AlDoubi, Anderson, Aragon, & Isaacs, 2014, p. 26). As the use of Facebook has continued to grow by both the number of users and the amount of time each user spends on it, we should be asking one question: Does the use of Facebook help or hurt college students in terms of social and educational opportunities? From a social standpoint, Facebook seems to have a lot to offer. As stated in the article “The Impact of Social Media on Children, Adolescents, and Families” Facebook gives people the chance to donate their time and efforts in the community by notifying them of upcoming events” (Clarke-Pearson & O’Keeffe, 2011, p. 2). Within the article “Me and My 400 Friends: The Anatomy of College Students’ Facebook Networks, Their Communication Patterns, and Well-Being” it states that an experiment preformed at the University of California proved that the more often college students were on Facebook, the more they felt supported from loved ones back home. Also, this made them feel as if they were a greater part of their college campus (Manago, Taylor & Greenfield, 2012, p. 370). From the article “Adolescent Peer Relationships and Behavior Problems Predict Young Adults’ Communication on Social Networking Websites” we learn that in another experiment at the University of Virginia they found that children between th...
Cyber bullying and online crime must be put at a stop. Parents and teachers should play a great role in regulating what their kids are doing on social media. Parents give their children smart phones, tablets, and computers but they fail to convey the proper way of using those tools. They should teach them the rules of being on social media by telling them from right to wrong. Parents don’t give their children a car to use without telling them the proper rules of how to drive the car. If they don’t teach them how to drive the car then that child wouldn’t know what to do about his or her car and may lead to an accident. This is the same way of how parents should also teach their kids of how to regulate on social media. There are many privacy settings on these social network sites which some kids are not aware off or simply do not care about. We should put an aware of these settings to them and teach them from right to wrong. Parents and teachers should also encourage their kids to come talk to them if they are facing any type of
Technology has changed the way our society communicates, socializes, and interacts with each other forever. Some are of the belief that there is nothing better on earth then when the newest technology comes to the shelfs.Whether it is the new Ipad, Iphone, or big flat screen T.V. there always seemed to be a line out the front door. Unfortunately there is a underbelly a very evil and dark side that is finally getting the attention it deserves. One of the biggest contributors to the new social media push is Facebook. This particular application has been used for gross electronic aggression and has become the gateway for the arsenal of schoolyard bullies. In 2008 I watched as my neighbors 14 year old daughter go from being a sweet straight A student, to being a EMU, sexually promiscuous, and participating in drug activity. This occurred in a 9-12 month period after receiving her Facebook account. Ironically in 2008–2009 the School Crime Supplement (National Center for Education Statistics and Bureau of Justice Statistics) indicates that 6% of students in grades 6–12 experienced cyberbullying. Because of Facebook our country has seen are teens start to measure their worth, appearance, and feelings of low self-esteem leading to the tragic suicides in the media.
Facebook and other social media platforms have brought communication across the world to a whole new level. The rise of social media has created a place for children to communicate with others in both a positive and negative manner. Although it has made a positive impact on American youth, it has also contributed and exacerbated bullying in our schools. This new form of bullying, often referred to as cyberbullying, has created an around-the-clock atmosphere where bullying can occur even when school is not in session. Many professionals have sought to address the negative aspects of social media and have worked to develop a solution to bring cyberbullying to an end.
Social media can often be improperly used and can become a distraction for students in class or while studying and doing homework. Additionally, use of social media in schools can lead to a significant increase of cyberbullying affecting students’ educational performance. Finally, lack of social skills can be a product of social media use as students lose the face-to-face interaction with their peers. Overall, students are affected negatively by social media use in school. Should schools ban the use of social media this would result in higher grades, decreased cyberbullying and increased face-to-face communication between students and between students and teachers. A possible solution would be for school boards to permit access to only certain applications and sites and have other social media site blocked either on the school network or in the school

Although this research will focus on grade point averages of students, it will also determine if social networking has effects on other aspects of the college life such as sleeping patterns, health, and awareness.

To begin, there have been many speculations about social media and how the effects it has on grades. Stated by Lomeli, “some students would rather Facebook then do their homework. There is a lot of time lost due to social media”. As Lomeli said, "some students spend six to eight hours per day on social media, such as Facebook, while completing their homework. Doing work and using a social media at the same is a huge distraction. “Students who use social media had an average GPA of 3.06 while non-users had an average GPA of 3.82 and students who used social networking si...
The negative effects of social networking sites overweigh the positive. These sites has resulted in an impact of potential hazards to the community. The students are victims of social networks more often than others. This is because the consequences when they learn or find their course material online, they get attracted to these sites to kill their boredom in their studies and also distract them from their duties. Other negative effects of social networking sites include the following:
Some believe social networks are a waste of time; slacking in school or in jobs and can sometimes be dangerous. Facebook, Snapchat, or Twitter can be one of these problems with some teenagers. “Students who use social media had an average GPA of 3.06 while nonusers had
Few researches found that there is no relationship between Facebook and college students’ academic performance. For instance, Sana Rouis examines that Facebook has no significant effect on students’ achievement (296). In her research, she surveyed a large group of 203 undergraduate students and employed two different types of data analysis (298). Focusing on the same type of participants, Syarif Husin Lubis et al. also found that there is no difference between Facebook users and non users in terms of their academic performance (590). Although Lubis et al. surveyed a smaller number of participants, their research is more thorough than Rouis’ because it employs more control variables (591). Furthermore, unlike Rouis, Lubis et al. are more detailed in their research by examini...
