D.A.R.E is an amazing subject where we learn about how to avoid drugs, ways to communicate, deal with stress and how to deal with a risky situation, etc. However, today I will be writing about, how you can communicate effectively, how to use the D.A.R.E Decision Making Model, and how to use confident communication.
For starters, communicating effectively helps people know that you are listening when they address you. For example, body language is a great way to tell someone you are listening to their conversation. It is rude to text and turn your back to the speaker while they’re talking. The D.A.R.E. Decision Making Model stands for Define, Assess, Respond, Evaluate. Define means describe the problem, challenge, or opportunity that occurs. Assess, what are your choices and what are the consequences for each of them. Respond, make a choice and use the information you have gathered about both things to make a decision. Evaluate, review your decision. Did you make a good choice on what to do? We use the D.A.R.E Decision Making Model in many situations. As An example, one situation can be where someone has two events at the same time and has to choose between the two of them. We would describe the opportunities, then we would write down the two choices and the consequences for our absence of each of the events, we would then make a choice and use the facts/information we gathered, and review our decision and see if we made a good choice. Let’s figure out the word’s definition. Confident is when you are acting in a way that communicated your opinion while still respecting others. Communication is when people express their thoughts or feelings with each other. So confident communication is when you are acting in a way to communicate your opinion and express your feelings with others without disrespecting them or their feelings. People will know that you are confident as you speak to them when you smile, speak clearly, and don’t mumble. If someone makes an offer or a request to you, using confident communication will be the best way to respond. For instance, let’s say someone asks you to smoke with them. A good way to respond with confident communication example would be to say “No thanks,” and make up something to avoid the risk at hand. An example up would be saying, “No thanks, I have to do chemistry homework with my friends.” In this case, you were expressing your feelings confidently without hurting other people’s feelings. You did that by simply saying “no thanks,” and making up a conflict with this unexpected event to avoid the risk at hand. That’s why confident communication is a good way to respond to any situation. So the next time someone talks to you, answer them using confident communication.

I have witnessed surgeons on occasion tell nurses and technicians to perform duties outside of their scope of practice for the simple convenience of saving time and the physician not having to do it themselves. This paper explores the legal, ethical and moral issues of three healthcare colleagues by applying the D-E-C-I-D-E model as a foundation of decision making as found in Thompson, Melia, and Boyd (2006). Issues explored will be those of the actions of registered nurse (RN) John, his fiancé and also registered nurse (RN) Jane and the Director of Nursing (DON) Ms Day. Specific areas for discussion include the five moral frameworks, autonomy, beneficence, Non – maleficence, justice and veracity in relation with each person involved as supported by Arnold and Boggs (2013) and McPherson (2011). An identification and review of the breached code of ethics and the breached code of conduct in reference with the Nursing, Council, and Federation (2008) will be addressed. Rational, bounded rationality, Intuitive and creative decision making are all effective paths toward achieving resolution and can be executed by different leadership styles. Looking at the problem facing the email blast procedure at Vail Health Foundation, rationality as a decision making model will garner the most effective results considering all the variables involved. In order to successfully evaluate data in a critical manner, you must have a system in place to assess information as it is presented. In any situation whether you are having a conversation, observing others, or material you have read, you must be ready to probe deeper and ask the right question at the right time.
A decision is a solution chosen from among alternatives. Decisions must be made when a person is faced with a problem or an issue that needs resolution. Decision-making is the process of selecting a course of action (ideas or alternatives) that will solve a problem and resolve any issues. Decision-making models provide people with a method for making decisions. There are numerous decision-making methods people utilize today. Some are meant to be all encompassing, meaning they can be utilized in many different environments. Others are specific to issues or industries, such as technology, psychology, and mathematics. Regardless of the problem, there is usually a decision-making process that is best suited for any situation, and it is up to us to find it.
As The Gift of Listening describes, “Opening one’s heart and listening at a deep level does not come easily and is rarely achieved simply by life experience” (Browning & Waite, 2010, p. 151) There are different aspects to being a good listener that are often difficult to achieve and lead to poor listening. One significant challenge to listening is the attention needed in order to actively listen to another person. Proper listening does not occur due to a passive process but instead it takes deliberate action and thought towards what a person in saying. Like previously stated, actively listening is achieved by sitting in a comfortable and open way and maintaining good eye contact. When a person does not exhibit these techniques good listening often does not occur. The challenge of utilizing different techniques in order to listen to others in a better way often gets blocked by barriers that make active listening unable to occur. In our society today one major barrier to listening is technology. In a casual setting, proper listening often doesn’t occur due to someone being tied to their cell phone. Communication has been used since the days of the cavemen. When the cavemen learned to communicate they greatly increased their hunting potential. When they learned to communicate on the hunt and before the hunt, they caught much more game then when they were just randomly running after the animals with spears. In school, if teachers and students could not communicate well, how would anything ever get done? In a business, communication is the most important ingredient. Decision making, as taken from the Wikipedia (2006) encyclopedia, is defined as "the cognitive process leading to the selection of a course of action among alternatives. Every decision making process produces a final choice called a decision. It can be an action or an opinion. It begins when we need to do something but we do not know what. Therefore, decision-making is a reasoning process which can be rational or irrational, and can be based on explicit assumptions or tacit assumptions." (para.1). Decisions made by using a decision-making model typically result in better decisions. Decisions resulting from the model tend to be more consistent since the same steps are followed each time. Increased thoroughness of decision options considered is another benefit in using a decision-making model, as numerous factors are taken into account.

In conclusion, decision making is an important concept in everyday life because it is linked to success and effectiveness in various situations.
