One factor is family history. Many abusers were exposed to domestic violence at some point in their life. Domestic violence is a learned behavior and this exposure may have left the abuser feeling that abuse is normal. For instance, a child’s exposure to their father’s abuse of their mother is the strongest risk factor for transmitting domestic violence from one generation to the next (Benedictis, Jaffe, & Segal, 2014). Another factor of domestic violence is power and control. Sometimes in a relationship, one person might feel as if they want or need to be in control. When this occurs, abuse can occur. Research has shown that people with abusive tendencies generally turn violent when they feel out of control (Joyful Heart Foundation, 2016). Some immediate causes that can set off a bout of domestic abuse are stress, provocation by the intimate partner, economic hardship, such as prolonged unemployment, depression, desperation, jealousy, and anger (Benedictis, Jaffe, & Segal, …show more content…

Women
The main effect of domestic violence in women is to their physical health. In addition to causing injury, Heise et al. (1999) found that violence increases women’s long-term risks of a number of other health problems, including chronic pain, physical disability, drug and alcohol abuse, and depression (as cited in Alhabib & Jones, 2010).
Some other effects of domestic violence are sleeping problems, anxiety attacks, low self-esteem, lack of trust in others, feelings of abandonment, anger, sensitivity to rejection, diminished mental and physical health, inability to work, poor relationships with their children and other loved ones, substance abuse as a way of coping (Benedictis, Jaffe, & Segal, 2014).
The biggest most unfortunate effect of domestic violence is death. Sometimes the abuser recognizes the era in their ways, seeks help and changes but most times this is not the case. The cycle of abuse will continue until the victim puts an end to it by leaving or reporting the abuse.
