Although in some remote pockets of Ancient Rome the Greek language strongly accented the primary tongue, the people were a dominantly Latin speaking population. More specifically, Archaic Latin (also known as Old Latin)- the original version of Latin that today’s Modern and Classical editions branch from.
Due to the Ancient Roman Empire conquering many countries over the course of it’s time, a great deal of present-day languages, such as English, French and Italian, originate from Archaic Latin. The Romans forced the people from the new sections of the Empire to speak Latin and therefore prove their true ‘Romaness’.

Writing
Originating from the early Etruscan Alphabet, the Ancient Roman Alphabet, and indeed their lettering, is not too dissimilar to the Italian lettering used today.
Writing on animal skins and papyrus paper (an idea they stole from the Ancient Egyptians), most people, even the poor, of Ancient Rome learnt to read and write at an early stage in their life. While learning, however, students had to write on a wax tablet, imprinting their letters into it with a pointed stick, called a stylus. Once they had proven to their teacher that they could write proficiently, they were then allowed to write on paper, using quills and ink made from either gum and soot or, occasionally, the ink of an octopus. Paper was very expensive back then, something only the rich could afford- and even then, only boys would usually use.

Cities and Grand Structures
The city-state of Ancient Rome had numerous grand and advanced structures, many of which remain in their near perfect former glory right to this day. A few of their most famous ...

The army of Ancient Rome consisted of approximately 150,000 soldiers at its peak. However, to make things easier, it was broken up into ‘legions’, which contained 4000-6000 soldiers each. Each legion was then split into ‘cohorts’ (around 1000 soldiers in each), which were then split into ‘centuries’ (80-100 soldiers).
The Ancient Roman army was extremely disciplined; this was probably one of the reasons they were so successful in war.
Another factor that helped, however, was tactics. The Ancient Roman’s favourite strategy was to ‘siege’- surround the city and stop anyone from entering or leaving until the inhabitants starved to death. They also used battering rams to destroy buildings and catapulted rotting animal carasses inside the city’s walls to help spread disease amongst the people. How horrible!
The Romans left behind a substantial amount of remarkable legacies that are still standing or still have an immensely large impact on the world today. They built over 53,000 miles of roads to connect together every province in the empire, which were mainly built by the army and were built by hand. The Romans were responsible for building the Aqueduct, which were bridges that carried water into towns. In addition, the Romans built public latrines and systems of sewage pipes to carry sewage out of the streets and had the waste into the River Tiber, then out to sea. The language 'Latin' was first initiated and consummated by the Romans, which was written in an alphabet attained from the Greek alphabet. Latin eventually evolved into one of the "Romance languages", which still used in former Roman lands. English, Spanish, French, Portuguese and Italian are all "Romance languages". The word “Romance” was evolved from the word “Roman”. Some Roman building...
Egyptian hieroglyphs were carved in stone, and later hieratic script was written on papyrus. However, Olmec glyphs was discovered on cylinders. Hence, Egyptians and Olmec had different types of writing, and different places to write.

The Romans also saw a need for well-planned cities. They used the same basic layout as they would for an army encampment. Water would flow into a cistern through the aqueducts to be dispersed in the cities plumbing. The cities were laid out in small sections, each section having its own fountain. The wealthy citizens would have also had hot and cold running water. The Romans also made sure that the streets could accommodate heavy traffic. By allowing for extra traffic the Roman army could move through a city more easily and it allowed for future expansion.
Outward appearance was extremely important to the Romans and the first thing that new recruits learned was to march in perfect form. Once they knew how to march they were then assigned to the legions in which they would remain for the next 20 years of service. (the book) The legions were made up of between 5000 and 5500 men. In a legion there were 10 Cohorts and in those Cohorts there were 6 Centuries. Auxiliary troops, although not usually counted as part of a legion, were part of a legion and could raise the number of men from around 5000 to 6000. The number of legions active in the empire was consistently between 25 and 33. (internet, http://museum.simplenet.com/rome/military/military.htm) The average year for auxiliaries to serve was 25 years or less. After about 20 years in the legions they “graduated” to a veteran cohort, and continued service there for about 5 years. The soldiers who completed their 25 years of military service to Rome were given a “diploma” made of bronze. It was actually a record of their service throughout the years and a copy was kept in soldier’s files in Rome. (the book)
classes them with 'barbarians'. 'Tuscan' to the Romans of later date frequently meant the same as did 'Italic' in
There are many political, economic, sociological causes to the growth and expansion of the Roman republic and later the Roman Empire, but one major factor of expansion that the Romans are most famous for is there Army. There Army was famous for their harsh discipline amongst their own ranks and there mercifulness brutality amongst their enemies. According to our text Roman warfare was characterized by great ferocity and the Roman pursuit of victory was relentless. The Romans had a pragmatic view towards atrocity and massacre that viewed almost any act as justifiable if it eased the path of victory (Goldsworthy 2000) p. 24. The hoplite phalanx which originated by the Greeks and later adopted by the Roman army, demanded great discipline and adherence to orders in order for this group of soldiers...
The Roman Republic began in 509 B.C.E. with the overthrow of the Etruscan monarchy. In 27 B.C.E the Roman Empire began with Octavian Caesar becoming the emperor, this ended almost 500 years of republican self-government. There is much debate over why Rome became so powerful so quickly. Many think it had to do with Rome’s military strength. Others think that it was because Rome knew of and controlled most of the trade routes. Still others believed it had to do with the technology that was advanced during the Roman Republic. All of these factors played significant roles, but which one played the most important role?
To a soldier, war was not romantic nor an intellectual adventure: It was a job of work to which he brought a steady, stubborn, adaptable schooled application (Adcock 6). A grouping of men called Legions were the main force in the Roman Empire. In the Republican times the legions were given a serial number (I, II, III, etc.) each year they were recruited. The smallest unit in the legion was the century, made up of one hundred men. Legionaries used javelins to begin the battle at long range and disrupt enemy battle lines before charging forward to engage the enemy at close range with swords and shields. The normal strength of a Legion was four thousand infantry and two hundred calvary, which could be expanded to five thousand in an em...
“Many European cities still bear reminders of the power of ancient Rome, and throughout the western world the influence of Roman power is still manifest.” “As the Roman Empire expanded Roman architects struggled to achieve two overriding aims: to demonstrate the grandeur and power of Rome, while also improving the life of their fellow citizens.” They held the Greeks in high regard for both their sculpture and architecture, learned stonework and pyramid architecture from the Egyptians, and absorbed important techniques from the Etruscans. To that end, the Romans perfected three architectural elements: concrete, the arch, and the vault. These three elements helped lighten the load carried by Roman structures while maintaining overall durability.
The society of the ancient Romans has often been considered the bases for our modern society. When one thinks of the Roman society, pictures of grand villa's and of senators wearing Toga's come to mind. Also, Roman society is often associated with great feasts and extravagance among the rich. There is more to Rome, however, then these symbols and the Classical Roman society is one with a complicated history that covers the history of the ancient city and involves the family, the home, education and much more. The social structure of ancient Rome was based on heredity, property, wealth, citizenship and freedom. It was also based around men: women were defined by the social status of their fathers or husbands. Women were expected to look after the houses and very few had any real independence.
The Roman army was known for its discipline, organization, and innovation, which allowed Rome to build an empire that would dominate the Mediterranean world. Also known for its longevity of survival, the Roman army was one of the most effective fighting forces in military history. Greek biographer Plutarch credits the founder of Rome, Romulus, with creating legionary forces that fought in a form of a militia, with recruitment dependent on a citizen’s social standing. Rome had six classes of wealth upon Rome’s citizens; the lowest group had no land and were excluded from the military, while the highest group, the equites, formed the cavalry.
Rome contributed to major cultural advancements that transform cultural heritages and legacy through major attributes. Romans influenced groups and societies that history transpired to generations that came after the Roman era. Speaking of Rome has an essence in its own right when uttering the name “Rome” my mind automatically thinks of regal, royalty, power, and leadership. If this semester didn’t teach me anything it taught me the importance and significant of our history and how Rome is at forefront of making it all possible. The evidence of Rome’s nostalgic, historic input is evident throughout Europe, North America, Asia, and Africa.
With the decline and fall of the western empire, the classical age of Rome came to a close as disease, warfare and corruption conspired to bring about the downfall of an ailing empire that had once conquered the known world. Where once enlightened despots had ruled a debauched and unwieldy polity, now barbarians stood over the ruins of a once thriving metropolis. In its absence a new world would arise with new values and ideals. Turning their back on a pagan past the Christian children of these wild men from the north would spawn the greatest houses of future European nobility, and when they looked back for a legacy, they would not see their ancestors as pillagers picking at the bones of a defiled Rome, but instead as its trusted guardians, partnering with the Church to carry her legacy through the “Dark Ages”.
This class has examined the various accomplishments of ancient Rome, many that have been carried on throughout time and influenced numerous cultures around the world. Amongst those accomplishments were the development of concrete and the utilization of arches. This paper will examine the Roman development of both concrete and the infamous concrete arch that is utilized in many modern day structures today.
