Culture is a very significant element to any society. It provides the structure of how a society acts, thinks, speaks and even interact with other societies, as well as distinguishes the norms from the devious. Culture and tradition, therefore, make a society unique on its own compared to others. Such is the power of culture that it binds a group – even a large group – of people to do activities which may seem insignificant to other groups while it being celebrated or enacted with austerity by the participating group. Culture can also be tied up with religion, political view, social definitions, and everything that humanity touches. Thanksgiving, for example, is a very important tradition in America and is a highly cultural one, as it already …show more content…
Rather than giving a somber dedication to the fallen Indians, present day America have already instilled in its society that it is a day for a feast – roasted turkeys, giving gifts, having a speech about what he is thankful for – and somehow eradicated the real reason why the Pilgrims celebrated their first Thanksgiving. It should be noted that the creator of the event is violence and the greed for land and the desire for domination – all negative aspects of human life. The assumptions which arouse from the event is the peaceful agreement and big feast between the pilgrims and the Native Americans, as well as the propaganda that the Native Americans are savages which should be eradicated from the seized lands of the settlers (Archeology in Tennessee 2014). And because the audience are modern Americans, whose real history got wiped out with consumerism, capitalism and propaganda for the Native Americans, the truth revealed has become insignificant. But the event, in its significant element, has made it possible for America to capitalize the markets, and has used this event to further expand markets and products that are now associated with Thanksgiving – which is Black
Nathaniel Philbrick opens his book by drawing a direct line from the early Pilgrim’s arrival on Plymouth rock to the building of America. He goes on to say, “Instead of the story we already know, it becomes the story we need to know.” Many of us growing up, myself included romanticize about the pilgrims in the light of the first Thanksgiving and we think about the Indians sitting down with the Pilgrims to take part of the Thanksgiving meal. Next, we believe the myth that everyone lived happily ever after.
Culture often means an appreciation of the finer things in life; however, culture brings members of a society together. We have a sense of belonging because we share similar beliefs, values, and attitudes about what’s right and wrong. As a result, culture changes as people adapt to their surroundings. According to Bishop Donald, “let it begin with me and my children and grandchildren” (211). Among other things, culture influences what you eat; how you were raised and will raise your own children? If, when, and whom you will marry; how you make and spend money. Truth is culture is adaptive and always changing over time because
The article, “Native Reactions to the invasion of America”, is written by a well-known historian, James Axtell to inform the readers about the tragedy that took place in the Native American history. All through the article, Axtell summarizes the life of the Native Americans after Columbus acquainted America to the world. Axtell launches his essay by pointing out how Christopher Columbus’s image changed in the eyes of the public over the past century. In 1892, Columbus’s work and admirations overshadowed the tears and sorrows of the Native Americans. However, in 1992, Columbus’s undeserved limelight shifted to the Native Americans when the society rediscovered the history’s unheard voices and became much more evident about the horrific tragedy of the Natives Indians.
As children growing up, they are taught that Thanksgiving is this wonderful celebration of how the Indians and the colonists came together in peace and harmony to share a meal. This gives the impression that everything was all ease and simple. Educators teach that Columbus and those in the beginning were great people just seeking an adventure and new land. There is some truth to these stories, however they fail to teach young ones about the horrible ways that the Indians were treated. “The Very Brief Relation of the Devastation of the Indies” by Bartolome De Las Casas and “The Relation of Alvar Nunez Cabeza de Vaca” by Alvar Nunez Cabeza De Vaca shine a whole new light on this subject. Las Casas and de Vaca used their writings
When the great holiday of Thanksgiving comes to mind, most people think of becoming total gluttons and gorging themselves with a seemingly unending amount of food. Others might think of the time spent with family and friends. The whole basis of the holiday is family togetherness, fellowship, and thankfulness for blessings received during the previous year.
This is a disgrace! To all the turkey’s at Thanksgiving! forty-five million turkey’s are cooked a year. Not only are those awful humans eating us, now they are entrapping us in disgusting cages and making us eat only corn and soybeans. That’s not even the worst part, they put something in our food called vitamins and minerals. I heard yesterday from keith, my turkey friend, that they talk about how they feed turkeys healthy things so that the people who buy the turkeys won’t get sick or something like that. They also say we taste different at different ages.

Thanksgiving Day is a day of family, food, and giving thanks for the blessings in life and yet some people believe Thanksgiving to be a prep day for Black Friday, the biggest shopping day of the year. The focus of Thanksgiving shifted from family bonding to incessant shopping. This trend of taking away from the hours of Thanksgiving in order to shop is enraging. It steals away from family time for the shoppers and the employees. Employers threaten workers that if they do not work on that certain holiday, they will be fired. Black Friday should be kept to Friday instead of moving in on my family time. The whole culture of Black Friday has become repugnant and unnecessary.
Thanksgiving is a holiday in the United States, which is celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November every year. Although the way holidays are celebrated over time, thanksgiving has always been a holiday feast. However, Thanksgiving is more than just eating food together with your family. One part that is common at almost every Thanksgiving dinner is the type of food that is served. Families in the United States have celebrated Thanksgiving for hundreds of years, but the way it is celebrated has slightly changed from the first Thanksgiving. To be able to explain
Culture is an important aspect to the society we live in today. With the economy so hard to live in, it’s making it harder for the individuals to meet their needs. There are many cultures that are around the world that is different in many ways. One way that many cultures come together is through the cultural events today. Cultural events are events pertaining to cultures, such as a feast or festivals. By attending cultural events, you experience firsthand the diverse offering of culture and artistic expression found in a community. The Essence Music Festival and the Mardi Gras are two of the festivals that many people attend for all over the world.
Within the United States there is a huge diversity of cultures. Culture is many different things, it is a tradition, it is the values and beliefs passed down from generation to generation, and culture is the identity of any country. Culture helps to identify one cultural group from the other. Although we may live in the same country, city, or state we still differ from one another by the way we dress, our beliefs, language, traditions, music, art, food, religion, and politics.
The purpose of Thanksgiving in Canada is different from the Americans. But even though the reasons for giving thanks are different, many of the customs are the same. Canadian Thanksgiving was originally started to give thanks to God for a bountiful harvest. This was when there were lots of farmers that grew crops. Now we give thanks for everything we appreciate. Some farming families still give thanks for a good crop.
Holiday dinners are well known for the staple meats like turkeys, hams or roast beefs, I find that abnormally too traditional for my taste. What I love about holiday dinners are the warm gatherings with my family, the sometimes tottering uncertainty of outside guests and enthusiasm for surprise dishes. My favorite holiday dinner has always been Thanksgiving. I have always attended these holiday dinners without a plus one, there would be an awkward exception Thanksgiving of 2004. Thanksgiving of 2004 I thought to myself “Why not bring an extra watering mouth to feed? Thanksgiving is supposed to be about assembly with outsiders. At least that is what the history book pictures displayed.”. So I invited James. I figured drop a few light weighted
The world’s culture can be found in many cities around America; restaurants of varying origins, sportswear from around the world, clothing styles from past cultures and current cultures, specific areas that are specifically called “China Town” and “Little Italy” etc. All of these different areas can make it quite easy to obtain almost anything about any culture, and hard to ignore the culture of the Celts in October due to Halloween having strong roots in their culture from over 2,000 years ago. Also good luck trying to dodge the Santa’s trying to obtain your money for the Salvation army, clearly decorated pine trees suspiciously looking a lot like a Christmas tree, or locking out any of the holiday jingles from intruding and making a home in your head for days. What about Cinco de Mayo, St. Patrick 's day? None of these popularly celebrated days in America have anything to do with America’s culture, but rather other cultures that have been around much longer than even the thought of America. Yet none of these holidays are even mentioned with cultural appropriation or make the headlines in any news. Also with America’s largest population being noted as white due to physical appearances alone, hate and scorne had blossomed around cultural appropriation if you don’t resemble the culture that you are appropriating. All of this originating back into the opinions that people have about what is part of one culture compared to
Cultures bound everything from food, religion, music, language, clothing, how we socialize and the sports we play. This is what defines people of all different areas of the world. Today America can be considered as a “Mixed Salad”, where immigrants have held onto their own customs as they migrate into our society. We are not a nation of one culture but a nation of cultures combined. The United States has a population of around three hundred million people and is the third largest country in the world. We as a country are considered to be one of the most diverse place in the world. Every part of the world has had some influence on how we do things in America. Foreigners can remember their first experience of America whether it be watching a
