One John Proctor, saw himself above the nonsense, that witches could not exist in Salem, his wife, his children nor him; But, when Mary Warren said to the court that he used his spirit to drag her into court to testify against the girls, the judges deemed her word more truthful than his. After actively and repeatedly denying the claims, he was sentenced to death, for only a witch could lie in the face of god.

Thou sable, luminous, hair which falls right below the arches in her broad shoulders. The shoulders toned by hard work to hold the town together. The deep black circles that cast deathly shadows under her eyes from lack of rest. The woman who turns all the heads of the people in this small town of Salem Massachusetts. I must come to encounter this woman who cast the beat to my heart.
Humans can only take so much until they reach a certain breaking point. People will crumble filled with rage and commit many immoral acts. Once they execute these evil motives they must be punished. “You will give me your honest confession in my hand, or I cannot keep you from the rope.” (Miller,1272). A great example of this is the Salem witch trials. A few individuals may know it because of The Crucible. In Arthur Miller’s play, The Crucible, he conveys the corrupted decisions and processing in the justice system. “Well, all the plays that I was trying to write were plays that would grab an audience by the throat and not release them, rather than presenting an emotion which you could observe and walk away from.” by Arthur Miller. All great works provide a way to reach in and grab the audience through the reoccurring themes like, greed, jealousy, reputation and hypocrisy. This story was based on the Salem witch trials that occurred in 1692. In the story some of the characters were based on the real life versions of themselves but changed slightly for the storyline. Abigail Williams was the manipulative character throughout the whole thing and blaming everything else on someone else even if it was her that did it. Basically if you got accused of witchcraft (even with no hard evidence) you were sent to court and if you admitted to it your life was spared but if you didn’t (even if you didn’t take part in witchcraft) you were hung.
The Crucible provides us with an example of a masterpiece of dramatic writing. In this play Arthur Miller gives us a stimulating example of the use of a variety of theatrical techniques. His most powerful scenes in "The Crucible" have common characteristics: very effective use of stage actions, long build-ups of suspense that come crashing down in thundering climaxes, intense displays of emotion and an abundance of dramatic irony. These are my three chosen scenes: p46-50: "Tituba........Devil!", p98-100: "She thinks.......Oh God" and p101-105: "You will.....Mr Hale!". Because of the importance of these scenes as key moments in the play Miller makes them dramatically superb so that the "No,sir" by Elizabeth that decides the outcome of dozens of lives and of her own and her husband’s, John Proctor is also the climax of the most effective build-up of suspense in the play. The effectivness of these scenes is also enhanced by powerful characters such as John Proctor and Danforth who display such intensity in their emotions and actions that the audience can not help but be moved. But most of all, these scenes show Miller’s theatrical qualities so that by the end of each of these scenes we not only understand his message but also find ourself convinced by his arguments .

Written with conviction and an higher purpose in mind, The Crucible, an insightful play written by Arthur Miller, illustrates the correlation between the Salem Witch Trials and the Red Scare, which was taking place during the time when the play was written. Miller uses literary devices to emphasize the storyline and dynamic characters with distinct and elaborate personalities to strengthen the story. A tragic hero is one who possesses a tragic flaw that ultimately leads to a downfall and who suffers greatly, only to come to a fulfilling solution. John Proctor proves to be a prominent character that changes the story in drastic ways. Though he could be argued to carry some of the traits of a tragic hero, his inability to gain pity from the audience
