The Crucible is a tale of revenge, self-interest, politics, and vendettas. Person after person throws each other under the bus to gain something for themselves. In a time of hysteria, neighbors realize that turning on each other can potentially benefit them in various ways. Revenge is seen over and over again throughout the story. In the long run, nothing good comes to anyone who pursues an act of revenge. However, it can be understood why many characters tried seeking vengeance on others in this insane time of hysteria. In Basma Abdul Hassan Ali’s scholarly article “Revenge in Arthur Miller’s The Crucible” he remarks that in all of human existence, zero good ever comes out of someone seeking revenge. It is a human trait to seek revenge on others, it is in our blood to do so. Ali goes on to state all the times that a character from the play committed an act of revenge. Examples include the accusation Abigail Williams puts on Elizabeth Proctor, Mary Warren accusing John Proctor, and Thomas Putnam accusing George Jacobs. Each accuser was looking for personal gain after making their accusation. To do this, they harmed the reputation of others with a grudge. We see later on that this only ends up hurting them. Ali also says, “The dramatist portrays vengeance as an immense destruction of human life. Vengeance is never positive for humans.” (11). Abigail Williams is a prime example of this. After all the damage she did to her reputation and the failure of her plan, Abigail flees Salem after robbing Paris to start fresh elsewhere. Abigail’s need for vengeance completely destroyed her life, as you can see at the end of the play.
