In the play, The Crucible, by Arthur Miller, the readers see the events that occur during the Salem witch trials. The Salem witch trials tore apart families and friendships, and there is a lot of judgment on people based on their relationship with God. “But God made my face; you cannot tear my face. Envy is a deadly sin,” (Miller 115). Within this Christian town, people are unable to read a text other than the Bible without being accused of witchcraft. They are not allowed to miss church and are required to know all of the commandments by heart. There is a lot of tense scenes within the play between those who are accused trying to prove their innocence and those who claim to have seen the accused involved in witchcraft. Danforth threatens Giles to prison if he does not speak as he has low tolerance with people not doing what he says. He gains his power when he arrives in Salem for these trials and he easily gains power over other people, since he could easily sentence someone to death for going against him in his court. Danforth ends up being trapped by his own ego after he initially believes Abigail and the other girls are possessed. The initial belief that the girls were possessed stopped him from taking in other perspectives and considering the fact that they were faking as there was such ‘concrete evidence’ against them. There are many people within The Crucible who become power hungry or over empowered. The main ones are the girls, Hale, and Danforth, with Hale being one of them that we see use his power for good. Power can be a funny thing, as it can either lead a group to victory or make a person threatening or violent. The people of Salem are very religious, and they let God lead their decisions and thinking. This could influence how people used their power since they all wanted to avoid being accused of
