Since he was close to God as a reverend, he could claim that he was close to the divinity of God, meaning that, without religion, his corruption would not have prospered. He would not have been able to maintain his power by controlling Salem's religion. Through exploiting religion, he secured his position at the top, corrupting the government and, additionally, the town. Furthermore, without religion being a primary aspect of Salem, Parris would not have been able to claim control or instill fear into the city, meaning that religion is to blame for the corruption of Parris and the town’s fear. Religion is the reason that Salem’s community would be broken down and corruption would grow within Reverend Parris. Fatality to Community The main consequence of religion’s grasp on Salem, Massachusetts as depicted in The Crucible is the fatality of their community. As an example, during the Witch Trials, the reverends accuse Rebecca Nurse, one of the well-liked and trusted doctors of the town, of murder and she is sentenced (Miller, 2003).
