Jamir Smith Mr. Gallucci English 3 26 March 2024 The Crucible Essay- Jamir Smith The Crucible, Arthur Miller (1953), is a play written about the witch trials that happened in Salem, Massachusetts. The townspeople of Salem were in a state of confusion and fear of the “evil” because of the lies and false accusations. The Crucible is a fitting title for the play, because this time in history was very crucial and many people sacrificed their lives for their religion. In the text, John Proctor’s crucible is the adultery that he commits with Abigail, which breaks one of the 10 commandments. The town consists of protestants who are very religious and believe in not committing sin, and if done so then it is punishable by death. After John does this, Abigail is still attached to John so she casts a witch-like “spell” to make John's wife, Elizabeth, die because Abigail believed it would make him go back to her. Abigail then begins creating false accusations for the townspeople to cover for the witch-like actions performed and John sees how well Abigail manipulates and black mails people to get her way. As Abigail starts exposing others in the town for sins that they have committed, John becomes fearful of being manipulated and exposed for the adultery he engaged in. Abigail's “spell” does not work so she directly accuses Elizabeth of witchcraft hoping to get her hung but John stands up for her and also becomes accused of the same. John ends up being killed because he did not want to lie and give up his good name for a false accusation. John can resolve his crucible by removing the sensitivity he has for Abigail and owning up to the sin he committed. Although doing so would get John sent to prison, it would also expose Abigail and prevent her from further harming others with false
