The Different Views of Different People The Crucible is a complex story about a town called Salem, which lies in the state of Massachusetts. This story is about little girls in Salem lying about witchcraft which is related to McCarthyism which was going on at the time. McCarthyism is about a politician who verbally accused people of being communist, but never had any proof which is a lot like witchcraft because witchcraft is fake and cannot be proven. The Crucible, when viewed through the Marxist, Psychological, and Gender lens, is about little girls gaining power and bringing bad things into this world. Power is attractive but also confusing(Bigsby84) . The Marxist lens focuses on power and social hierarchy of the society. Power can make people do …show more content…
crazy and stupid things. The girls got many people executed like Rebecca Nurse and she was loved by many people in the town all because the girls did not like them. The judges believed the children with their insane lies about the townsfolk because they believed they were working with the devil. According to Bigsby, The Crucible is about a balance of power and the power is with the church and the children(84) which is very true. The children did not understand how much power they have and they just did whatever they wanted for the benefit of themselves. The judges, who also had tremendous authority, followed the girls, but later wondered why the townsfolk were angry. Kids were parent-less and there is feces everywhere and you wonder if there is a rebellion?(Miller137) One of the officers says this to Danforth after there has been multiple executions because of the accusers. Judges hold more power because there was no jury at this time and they make the decisions themselves. Power means authority and through the Marxist lens, readers can see how power affects a society. Psychological is the state of mind which determines the persons sanity whether they are sane or insane. The mind controls all the actions of a being and a persons state of mind can bring bad or good things into the world. A person may have points of weakness and when they do, it may cause trouble but some people in this world are pure evil with no good in them but without them we would not be able to tell the difference between good and evil(Schluter33). This is a good point because people who are pure evil, lie and tell people false information, for the sake of themselves like Abigail and McCarthy but there are good people in this world as well like Elizabeth. Elizabeth always told the truth except when she lied to protect her husband. Abby thought she would get in trouble if she told the truth which is correct, but it would have been little trouble had she done it. Instead she kept telling lies and people were being hanged all because of her. Without good, there is no bad and without bad there is no good. People choose to be good or evil with the help of the mind. The Psychological lens shows the society through a different state of mind. The minds of men and women are also different. Women are half of the world and sometimes the viewpoint of women is needed but not respected.
During this time, women had to do very little.Women have no role, but to do what she is told back in the old day(Bigsby85). This disrespected women and degrades them. They brought life into this world but men still did not think of them as equals. Girls at this time had to obey men and they were also more accused of being witches. Tituba went along with it and said she saw people working with the devil as well as the other girls who worked with Tituba(Miller50). All the girls spoke falsely about the names and listed whoever to benefit their own good. Later, they lie and say witchcraft is not good and they will work with god to end it(Miller150). They speak bad about witchcraft and yet they committed it. These girls lied in court which is against the law and got away free. Innocent people who told the truth died because of the ignorant judges who chose to believe in the women. Women's views back in the day were not seen as well as they are now. They have jobs other than working in the house and they can vote. Their views are more respected and through the gender lens, the readers can see the society through a female
perspective. People have the tendency to see a story one way but the Marxist lens shows how power affects a society, the Psychological lens shows the state of mind, and the gender lens shows the female perspective of a society. There are many more ways people will see the story. Some may think that witchcraft or communism is okay and that the story was pointless and others will think different things which is okay because if everybody saw it the same way, life would be boring. It is just that people usually do not tend to see things in a different view and it is different for everyone because it may be interpreted differently but all views are equally important.

The Crucible is paralleled directly to the Salem Witch Trials and indirectly to the McCarthy hearings of the 1950’s. The story of The Crucible takes place against the background of the Salem Witch, trials but the themes lie much deeper. The main themes expressed in The Crucible relate to the events that occurred at both the Salem Witch Trials and during the McCarthy era. At the Salem Witch Trials, one hundred fifty people were accused of practicing witchcraft and nineteen of those were convicted and executed. The evidence against these people was hardly substantial. At the McCarthy hearings, thousands of people were “blacklisted.” Anyone who tried to oppose the accusations was also viewed as a Communist. No one was convicted due to the more advanced legal system; still, that did not erase the fear that was instilled by the allegations.
The crucible’s setting was in the year 1962, in the small Puritan society of Salem. One night some of the girls in the village were in the woods doing love potions when they were caught. The girls lied and said that witches made them do it. In an extremely religeous society the influence of witches was immensely frightening and as the thought to identify witches arose, so did mass hysteria of the...

The Crucible is a 1953 play by Arthur Miller. Initially, it was known as The Chronicles of Sarah Good. The Crucible was set in the Puritan town of Salem, Massachusetts. It talks of McCarthyism that happened in the late 1600’s whereby the general public and people like Arthur Miller were tried and persecuted. The Crucible exemplifies persecutions during the Salem Witch Trials. The people were convicted and hung without any tangible proof of committing any crime. Persecutions were the order of the day. When a finger was pointed at any individual as a witch, the Deputy Governor Danforth never looked for evidence against them or evidence that incriminated them; he ordered them to be hanged. This can be seen through his words “Hang them high over the town! Who weeps for those, weeps for corruption!” (1273), the people were persecuted aimlessly. The four main characters in the play, John Proctor, Abigail Adams, Reverend Hale and Reverend Parris, are caught in the middle of the witchcraft panic in the religious Salem, Massachusetts in late 1690’s. Persecution is the most important theme in the Crucible, the leaders and citizens of Salem attacks and persecutes one of their own without any tangible evidence against them.
The crucible, written by Arthur Miller, is about the Salem witch trials and how people react to hysteria created from the fear of witches. In the play, after hysteria breaks out, the Salem government starts persecute and hang people it believes are witches. This prompts people to start to accusing people of witchcraft. Some people who accuse others of committing witchcraft are Abigail Williams and Thomas Putnam. They do not accuse people of witchcraft to stop witchcraft, but for personal gain or to hurt others. Thomas Putnam, one of the many characters who takes advantage of the witch trials, is able to use the fear of witches to bend the court to his will. Hysteria causes people to believe claims that are clearly false. This allows Putnam to persecute his enemies. He and many other are able to get away with this because hysteria driven persecutions are not run like regular courts and the fact that witchcraft is an invisible crime allows evidence to be made up. The theme of The Crucible is when any persecution is driven by fear and people can and will manipulate the system so they can gain and hurt another.
Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World demonstrates key principles of Marxist literary theory by creating a world where mass happiness is the tool used by positions of power known as the Alphas to control the masses known as the Epsilons at the cost of the people's freedom to choose. The social castes of Brave New World, Alphas, Betas, Gammas, Deltas, and Epsilons, draw parallels to the castes applied in Marxist literary theory, the Aristocracy, the Bourgeoisie and the Proletariat.
The Crucible is a famous play written by Arthur Miller in the Early 1950’s. It was written during the “Red scare, when McCarthyism was established. Many anti-communists wanted to prevent communism from spreading just like in The Crucible many wanted to get rid of witchcraft. Many would accuse others of witchcraft in order to not be accused just like many would accuse people of communism. In The Crucible witchcraft would be punishable by death. Many were scared to be accused; therefore many would admit practicing witchcraft in order to save their lives. The Crucible is considered a good play because it is based on real life events during the Salem witch Trials and shows how fear played a role in the individual’s life just like during the “Red” scare.
