The Crucible Essay The Crucible, Arthur Miller’s tragic portrayal of the Salem Witch Trials, introduces the audience to many different characters, as well as personalities. The story’s principal character, John Proctor, displays a protective nature towards his family and fellow townspeople. While some may not consider John a tragic hero, I will attempt to dispel their view. “A tragic hero is a type of character in a tragedy, and is usually the protagonist. Tragic heroes typically have heroic traits that earn them the sympathy of the audience, but also have flaws or make mistakes that ultimately lead to their own downfall.” (Hogue, Chelsea) The definition of a tragic hero directly correlates to John Proctor character traits. However, John is not easily swayed. His level-headedness allows him to search for a logical explanation to the events which unfold before him. In Act I, Proctor declares,” I. I have no witness and cannot prove it, except my word be taken. But I know the children’s sickness had naught to do with witchcraft.” (Miller, Arthur) Although numerous residents of Salem have attempted to convince Proctor of the demonic spirits at work, he refrains from accepting their accusations as reality. In doing so, Proctor relays the characteristics of a tragic hero by searching for rational clarification concerning weighty allegations. In director Ridley Scott’s Gladiator, tragic hero Maximus Meridius is extremely keen on vengeance and retaliation against the horrific assassination of his family. Unfortunately, this vengeance resulted in his eventual demise. Like Maximus, John Proctor houses a flaw, which eventually leads to his death. While Abigail Williams was working for the Proctor family, Proctor succumbed to a momentary lust for her. This lust led to him and his wife becoming the main subjects of Abigail's endless
