After being pressed and questioned multiple times to whether he was being serious. This article related clearly to a character in the novel, The Crucible by Arthur Miller in many ways. The changes that John Proctor goes through during the story show the theme that men will go to any lengths to protect their reputation.

is the belief of opinion that is generally held about someone or something, and integrity is the quality of being honest and having strong moral principles. In The Crucible, John Proctor is a self-righteous farmer who has a very strong influence on the people of Salem, Massachusetts, but has always carried a moral struggle about himself. Proctor is perceived as the model citizen who retains good morals on the town of Salem.
Everyone in the town views Proctor as a man with a mission. But in act 1 and 2 of the story, he commits adultery with a girl named Abigail. The story is once set in a religious community that is very strict on everything. This event put a bad image over his head as a man who commits adultery isn’t believed to truly love and respect his wife.
“Because it is my name! Because I cannot have another in my life! Because I lie and sign myself to lies! Because I am not worth the dust on the feed of them to hang! How may I live without my name? I have given you my soul; leave me my name!” (act 1, 36)
Proctor is currently ruining his reputation but also is aware that at the same time, many other innocent prisoners died while he quaked at death’s door and fled from it. Between pages 20-30 in act 1, Proctor’s desire to contain his reputation and integrity kept him from confessing his secret affair, but Proctor clearly understands how much he means to the town. After fitting into the role of a modern tragic hero, he fights for what he believes. He is against the hysteria and the injustice in the court and is ready to support all the consequences of his acts, which could even possibly mean the revoking of his reputation &

John Proctor was one of the main characters whose moral not only affected himself, but also the others surrounding him. Throughout the entire story, Proctor reinforces the theme that men will go to any lengths to protect their reputation, which sadly for him meant passing on but John Proctor did not die with pain and sorrow, on page 114 Proctor says "I have three children, how may I teach them to walk like men in the world, when I sold my friends." (114) He shows the people around him that he has to set a good example on the children so they can go off and be who they really want to be. John Proctor died a honest man, keeping his reputation.

He begs for his privacy because it is so important to him. However, he changes his mind because his name is too important, and he is hung because of it. Proctor finally stands up for what’s right and he shows that he won’t taint his name in order to save his own life. So they send him to be hung but he dies with his honor and his integrity.
Proctor’s prideful personality does not let him baptize his third son because he dislikes Reverend Parris (168, l. 516-520). Proctor withholds his affair with Abigail because of his pride, he was unable to confess it until his wife was accused. Before he confessed he stated that “a man will not cast away his good name,” this statement suggest that a man has a lot of pride in his name and therefore his confession must be true (189, l. 845-847). In addition, after confessing to witchcraft Proctor takes pride in his name and refuses to have his name nailed in the door of the church showing everyone that he confessed to witchcraft (207, l. 894-897). “You will not use me! I am no Sarah Good or Tituba, I am John Proctor! You will not use me!,” Proctor beliefs he is better than Sarah good and Tituba hence he would not sign his name (207, l. 899-701). Towards the end, Proctor thinks better of his action and rips the signed paper after declaring, “Because I am not worth the dust on the feet of them that hang! How may I live without my name? I have given you my soul; leave me my name!” (207, l. 725-730). Proctor compares himself with the brave people that are about to hang and takes pride in his name by refusing to keep on lying and ripping the paper with his signature; he bravely accepted death with the thought that his name is not tainted by
Despite these good qualities, John Proctor had many flaws as well. Lust was a constant struggle for Proctor in many forms. For instance, when Abigail was working for him and his wife, he lusted after her and committed adultery by having an affair. Afterwards, Proctor was extremely repentant and stopped seeing her. “Abby, you’ll put it out of mind. I’ll not be comin’ for you more” (Miller 21). This essentially lead to his demise because of the affair, Abigail became infatuated over Proctor to the point where she went into the woods with her friends and Tituba and practiced “witchcraft” to kill Proctor’s wife. “You drank a charm to kill John Proctor’s wife!” (Miller18). When the girls were caught and the whole “witch” hysteria broke out, people were getting accused and executed, including Proctor, who wouldn’t confess to witchcraft and died because of it. If Proctor never lusted after Abigail and had an affair with her in the first place, accusations of “witchcraft” would have never happened and his death. In the story, “The Crucible”, John Proctor is thought to be a sinful person because he does not know all of the commandments and sometimes plows on Sundays. The author does not reveal this to the readers directly but tells them what others have been saying about him. Readers can also learn that Proctor is quite prideful. His main goal was to save Elizabeth from hanging, but when Danforth gave him a deal that would save Elizabeth he did not take it. Proctor was too proud to take the deal. Also when Proctor confessed to seeing the devil, his pride got in the way from saving his life. He did not want his name to be slandered.
He is feared and respected throughout the town of Salem, but few know that he is guilty of adultery with the teenage servant Abigail Williams. As a result of this affair, Proctor is caught in guilt, which effects his self-perception.
In The Crucible, John Proctor is considered the anti-hero. Honest and humble, Proctor is a good man, but one with a secret, fatal flaw. He has fallen for Abigail Williams leading to her jealousy of Elizabeth, Proctor’s wife. Once the trials begin, Proctor realizes that he can terminate Abigail’s accusations; however, he can only do so if ha admits hi own guilt. Proctor is a proud man who places great emphasis on his reputation and such an admission would ruin that. He eventually makes an attempt to name Abigail as a sham without revealing the crucial information. When this attempt fails, he finally breaks out with a confession, calling Abigail a “whore”...
Moreover, he struggles with his moral standing on this issue because he is partly responsible for Abigail's vendetta against his wife. This guilt is best demonstrated when Proctor says at the end of the second act:

Their whole lives are ruined in a short amount of time because they refuse to compromise themselves by selling out their friends. Miller tries to make a statement about these unfair trials by comparing them to the Salem witch-hunts and trials of 1692. The main protagonist of his play is a man named John Proctor who is accused of witchcraft but stands up to maintain his name and his honor, even though he is hanged for it. During the H.U.A.C. trials some took stands for their beliefs with the knowledge of possibly being shunned by society. Knowing this, instead of taking the cowards' way and giving the names of their friends, they refuse to tell the committee anything in the same way that John Proctor stands up against a court that is ruining the lives of innocent people.
In Arthur Miller’s The Crucible, various characters, whether it is from physical trials or unseen personal struggles, experience some kind of major conflict. There are those who spend every day in fear, wondering whether or not they will be falsely accused of witchcraft. There are others who struggle with more internal trials, such as forgiving those who have hurt them. The protagonist, John Proctor, was a man of strong moral constitution, and held himself to a high standard for the sake of his good name and family. As a result of this, he struggled with a major internal conflict throughout the play.

This is different to the end of the play where he signed the confession to witchcraft. He later rips it up as could not live with himself if he were to allow Abigail to get away with her lies, through confessing to something he did not do. In ripping up the confession he is also able to keep his good name which he says at the end is all he has left, his name, and he does not want to give it away.

In the end, he sacrifices his reputation to try and save his wife’s and to bring down Abigail in the process. He does not succeed, but dies an honorable man of strong character.
Reputation in this play is what drives people to act in certain ways. Miller uses this theme in such a way that is seems to control certain characters like Danforth, Parris and Abigail thus portraying them in a negative and insincere light. They go to lengths to never have no contradict themselves or appear to be mendacious and deceitful whereas other characters such as John Proctor, Sarah Good and Giles, are driven by the will to protect their integrity.
