The Crucible The Crucible takes place in 1692 in Salem Massachusetts. It is about the Salem Witch Trials. The story is about Rev. Parris discovering a his daughter Betty, his niece Abigail, along with other girls with his slave, Tituba, dancing in the woods. His daughter fainted in fright of being caught and wouldn’t wake. The word about witchcraft gets around town and all the townspeople gather at Reverend's house. A nervous Reverend questions Abigail about what they were doing in the woods, but as it turns out Tituba was trying to conjure dead spirits. As the Reverend tries to calm the crowd, Abigail ends up alone with a farmer by the name of John Proctor, which she was a servant for. They had an affair. Abigail tells him that there was no witchcraft going on, and insists that he still loves her. He feels guilty about the affair and told her it was over. …show more content…

An argument about whether witchcraft led to Betty's condition soon transforms into an argument about other local political issues. Just then, Reverend Hale, a noted investigator of witchcraft, arrives, and Proctor, Rebecca Nurse, and Giles Corey leave. Under threat of punishment if she refuses to confess, Tituba breaks down and admits she communed with the devil. She begins to name other witches in the town. Abigail, seeing that she'll be punished unless she joins Tituba in naming names, leaps up and begins to name more witches. Betty wakes and joins
