The Crucible Act IV Questions
Cheever said that cows were the reason for Parris' mad look.
Reverend Hale returns to Salem hoping to help save the innocent lives. He advises the accused to confess even if they were not doing witchcraft to spare their lives.
Reverend Parris reveals that Abigail has fled Salem with Mercy Lewis and his money.
Salem is near-rebellion because of the amount of accusations of witchcraft of good people. Andover had a similar crisis earlier which ended up with the people rebelling over the court system.
Rebecca Nurse and John Proctor are good people and are known to be good people in Salem while the previously accused, now deceased, were considered the crazy people of Salem.
Reverend Parris wants Danforth to postpone the hangings so that the chances of rebellion are slim and that his life is safe. Hale also wants to postpone the hangings. Danforth is upset about their suggestions.

John decides to confess
Elizabeth believes that John is a good man because he has bared her sins and would rather die being truthful than be saved and alive with lies.
Proctor crumpled the confession because he doesn’t believe that the entire village needs to see an innocent man giving up their goodness.
When Hale says this he is referring to the blood of the people he feels responsible for hanging. Hale believes that the human life is the best gift from God, and he has played a role on taking this life from the people executed because of witchcraft. This is also why he begs Elizabeth Proctor to ask John to lie and confess--because he doesn’t want the guilt of having ended another person’s life.
Parris is afraid that the people in Salem will revolt. Parris is considered a high official because of his status as a reverend, and he is scared that he could potentially lose his job, power, and
