The Crucial Role of Symbols in To Kill a Mockingbird
In To Kill a Mockingbird, written by Harper Lee, themes and central ideas of the novel are emphasized by subtle symbols. Symbols shown throughout the novel not only represent concrete objects but also ideas, feelings, beliefs, and attitudes of the characters. Some symbols even represent more than one thing. Lee's recurring use of symbols contribute to the underlying themes and ideas of the novel. Lee's unusual title is a symbol itself and it keeps the reader in anticipation while waiting for a mockingbird to enter the story. Symbols contribute to literature by causing the reader to examine the piece of work and look for meanings other than the literal one. In To Kill a Mockingbird, the use of symbols play a crucial role in the development of the novel.
One of the first major symbols that emerge in the novel is Tim Johnson, a mad dog who is infected with rabies. Just as the dog is infected with rabies, the people of Maycomb County are "infected" with racism (Jones 54). When Tom Robinson is brought to trial, convicted, and ultimately murdered for a crime he did not commit, no one in the town seems to show any compassion or regret for him other than Atticus. Atticus describes the people of Maycomb as "mad dogs that he must confront" by defending Tom (Lee 103). To prove the symbol further, Atticus is the person called upon to shoot and kill Tim Johnson. This action by the people of Maycomb, show their deep trust in Atticus. As Atticus shoots and kills the mad dog, he also shots and kills racism in Maycomb as he steps up and defends Tom Robinson with all of his power. ... and Boo are uncanny. It is obvious that Harper Lee chose both of them as her mockingbirds. Lee's choice of such an unusual title is simply another symbol present in the novel. Lee's use of symbols re imperative to the development of her novel. The symbols give structure and hidden meaning to the text. As the reader contemplates the use of symbolism, the main theme always emerges: it is a sin to kill a mockingbird.

This is what Atticus Finch tells his children after they are given air-rifles for Christmas. Uniquely, the title of the classic novel by Harper Lee, To Kill A Mockingbird, was taken from this passage. At first glance, one may wonder why Harper Lee decided to name her book after what seems to be a rather insignificant excerpt. After careful study, however, one begins to see that this is just another example of symbolism in the novel. Harper Lee uses symbolism rather extensively throughout this story, and much of it refers to the problems of racism in the South during the early twentieth century. Harper Lee's effective use of racial symbolism can be seen by studying various examples from the book. This includes the actions of the children, the racist whites, and the actions of Atticus Finch.
The great theorist Jean Piaget was born on August 9th, 1896 in Switzerland. He distinguished four stages of cognitive development and called them the schemas. He also constructed new fields of scientific study, including cognitive theory and developmental psychology. He summed up his passion for the ongoing pursuit of scientific knowledge with these words: "The current state of knowledge is a moment in history, changing just as rapidly as the state of knowledge in the past has ever changed and, in many instances, more rapidly." During cognitive development children are little scientists that create theories, experiment, and conclusions on how to adapt to the world. When Piaget was a biologist, he was always curious about how an organism adapts to the environment, which he described as intelligence. He then thought that behavior, the adaptation to the environment, is controlled through schemas which would be used to represent actions. This would then explain that adaptation is driven by the biological drive to find an equilibrium between the environment and these schemas. Going off of this, Piaget believed that infants were born with schemas that started operating at birth which he then called “reflexes.” As the child aged, the schemas would grow to become more complex and would go about this in a series of stages. Each stage is very different according to Piaget. Cognitive theories focus the attention on conscious thoughts which means someone is more aware of their surroundings. Sensorimotor: Birth to two years. In this stage infants get the feel for the real world and are able to understand physically. Preoperational: two to seven years. Children during this stage are able to identify pictures and symbols. Concrete: Seven to eleven years.
