Next time when you are about to give up, instead don't give up and try again. In Crispin The Cross of Lead Crispin had to do this very thing. Everyone agrees that Crispin staying at his village was dangerous. Crispin should have ran away from his village, but others disagree and believe he should not have. Crispin should have ran from his village, for three reasons. He met Bear, his dad was Lord Furnival, and he learned many different skills. The first reason Crispin should have left his village is because he met Bear. bear kept Crispin safe even though he had to sacrifice his freedom, time, and himself. Bear knew the location of allot of people and places, which helped them with their journey. Crispin grew very fond of Bear, and really started
to look up to him. The second reason Crispin should have ran from his village is because his dad was Lord Furnival. Since Lord Furnival was dying it was dangerous for Crispin to stay, because when Lord Furnival dyes John Aycliffe could kill him. The third reason Crispin should have ran from his village is because he learned many new skills. He learned how to play music, he learned how to juggle, and he learned how to catch animals for him to survive. Crispin should not have ran from his village because he was alone. Crispin had no one with him therefore he did not know where to go. Crispin also had no idea where any places he could go to survive was. And finally he had no food, but this is all irrelevant because he was able to survive. Crispin should not have ran from his village because of Bear. Bear was extremely strong and he was like a giant compared to most other people. Bear ended up actually harming Crispin both mentally and physically. This should not have held Crispin back because Bear became a ally. Neither of these proofs are relevant because Crispin was able to survive on his own. Crispin should have ran from his village because he met Bear, his dad was Lord Furnival, and he learned many skills. it matters to John Aycliffe because he wanted Crispin dead.
In the book, Crispin: The Cross of Lead, the protagonist Crispin faces many conflicts throughout the book in which he must conquer in order to find who he really is. These conflicts change Crispin as a character over the course of the book, as he overcomes them to find out his true self. One conflict for Crispin is person vs society where he becomes known as a wolf’s head and does not have any friends, or family. This is until he meets Bear who helps Crispin overcome this conflict. For example, John Aycliffe tries to find Crispin, but helps him get away. As the story develops Crispin saves Bear from John Aycliffe, showing their friendship.
“I kept asking myself if I felt different, if I was different. The answer was always yes. I was no longer nothing…” (Avi 221) This is a famous quote from the historical fiction book Crispin The Cross of Lead, written by Avi. This book is about a boy named Crispin, who goes through many trials and meets many people who help him find his true identity. Through the story Crispin has three “fathers” in his life, Lord Furnival, Bear, and God the Father and he learns several important things from them.
He is hardworking, as seen in the fact that “all day he had been walking” (194) in order to gather the “necessities” (194). He is also uncompromising, as seen in the fact that his decree to his child to stop interacting with the son of the shiftless neighbour to be “unalterable” (193). Finally, he can also be seen as sympathetic. Despite the fact that he despises the behaviour of his neighbor and the neighbor’s child, and that he was “foot-sore as well as hungry” (195), he decides to save the crying child, whom he thought was the neighbor’s. By reaching an epiphany, to listen to his conscience and save the child. The settler is also described as prosperous, owning a “substantial frame-house” ().
Although Christopher McCandless was intelligent young man, he could’ve been a little more considerate of the fact that he wouldn’t be able to survive in the wild. To be able to survive without civilization, it requires experience and awareness of what’s to be expected. Christopher McCandless was not familiar with this type of environment, therefore he couldn’t survive. He was brave and fearless leaving everything behind and burning most of his belongings. Starting over is a hard thing to do, but getting rid of your old self may not be the best idea.
My outlook on his decision is that he wanted to leave the material world behind and experience nature and simplicity that is Alaska. An example to describe just why Alaska was a good place for Chris to go and leave his world behind and why it feels so simple is best explained by this quote from Sam Keith’s “One Man’s Wilderness: An Alaskan Odyssey.” Keith writes, “this country makes a man younger than his birthdays” (Keith 108). I believe this is why Chris wanted to live in Alaska so bad, the freedom and the simple lifestyle with no one but himself to rely
No one makes wise choices all the time, but those who follow their own aspiration makes a person feel more alive. In fact, the people who go out and follow their dreams are explorers or achievers, but the vision of their dreams can become fatal. The reason for this is because they are following their own dreams. Chris McCandless was a hitchhiker who went out into Alaska to get away from society and follow his “‘great Alaskan odyssey.(Krakauer 45)’” Unfortunately, he died, but along the book Into the Wild, by Jon Krakauer, he takes his readers through Chris’s journal entries and journeys before he heads to Alaska. Naturally, Chris had the ability to be independent through his way into Alaska but had some flaws that caused his death; one
Crispin knew that along with making the right decision it could follow with many repercussions. It takes a great deal of bravery to stand up to our enemies and this reflects how Crispin took a dauntless action to help save Bear by going back and risking his own life. For example, “If you’ll let the two of us – both him and me – leave Great Wexly, we will not come back…. I reacted by reaching down, snatching up the dagger, and leaping forward, flinging myself at his back.” In addition, “…the one thing I knew for sure was that Bear had helped to free me, he had given me life. Therefore I resolved to help free him – even if it cost me.” This valiant attempt indicates the boldness and willpower of this 13-year-old boy. Clearly, Crispin thought Bear was worth fighting for and he took action in something he was afraid of doing in order to prevent others from getting
Another instance of determination and ambition changing a life occurs when Dunstan is serving in the military. Having just wiped out a machine-gunner’s nest, he began the dangerous journey back to his own side. However, he is soon wounded in the leg by a stray piece of shrapnel. Quickly losing blood, and in copious amounts of pain, he continues the crawl towards his own side. A man with lesser motivation...
All in all, it is interesting how the trials of life can lead a person into an awakening that inspires millions. Many people believe that walking “into the wild” to live off the land and find himself alone in nature was arrogant, foolish and irresponsible. Chris lacks of knowledge about the wild was a major factor in his death. Chris did not plan how he will survive in the wilderness without proper equipments. He misunderstood that he would have no problem in setting in the wild. Chris immature manner and decisions lead him to starvation and ultimately death. If he planned it out in the beginning he would have saved his life.
A young man, in his twenties, sets off into the wild completely disregarding his family and his past life and takes on a whole new personality. This perfectly explains Chris McCandless and the journey that he initially set out on. He was a young man seeking self-acceptance and peace, and he looked for it in all of the different places that he visited. Visiting these places made Chis more and more hungry for a challenge. He planned on leaving the comfort of a home and setting out into the Alaskan wilderness, where he would eventually die. Many wonder what lead McCandless to his death and there are many different theories. Chris McCandless was motivated by guilt to go to Alaska, and although he died of starvation, his father’s abusive nature
In the novel Crispin, The Cross of Lead, this quote stood out the most, as it visualized Crispin’s point of religion. “Morality is of the highest importance - but for us, not for God.” BY Albert Einstein. Crispin is a thirteen year old boy, who is the poorest in the village Stamford. His mother died, and as well as the second person he trusted which was his priest; Father Quinel. As in Crispin, It’s important for him about what people think of him, and what he thinks of himself. But this isn’t the biggest thing that Crispin cares about, he mostly cares about his religion more than anything, as in praying all the time, and not being a menace to others. This novel take place in England, year 1377. Peoples’ main belief that time was that they had to survive, rather than to live; there lives were tough and hard, while a lot of corruptions happened. In Crispin people were sorted in levels, the higher class were free to do what they want, while the lower classes were unable to leave the village. Like today, teenage children in the medieval world had to find their identity based on the information and circumstances around them. In the novel Crispin The Cross of Lead by AVI, the main character Crispin finds his identity in at least three places: his social status, his faith in God, and what others (especially Bear) think of him. But, Crispin most powerfully found his identity in Faith in God, as in religion.
When a person focuses on a single objective, it leaves room for mistakes along the way. Chris’s adventure into the wild was rough and he had made lots of mistakes in order to be free from his normal life that had fragments in it he felt unnecessary so he left for Alaska. The expectations to survive for long in the wilderness and come out normally were high for Chris. He had made the naïve mistake of ignoring the signs of his chance of survival were dwindling thus leading to his death. In other story’s the naïve mistakes seem to be what make an epic adventure tale, but for Chris McCandless his story did not live up to what all the tale make of them only there negative possibilities.
This is why many people continually criticize his actions. Chris went into the wild thinking he would be fine with just “a .22-caliber rifle and a 10-pound bag of rice and lived there for more than 100 days, hunting and foraging” (Saverin). Chris didn’t have nearly enough supplies to get survive. Chris eventually realized this but when he tried to turn back, the Teklanika River he had crossed getting there rose, rendering it impassable. This river would eventually take the life of another person. In 2010, 29 year old Claire Ackermann tried to follow the footsteps of the famous Chris McCandless but ended up drowning in the Teklanika River. Chris could not cross back over that overflowing river which caused him to face a death that would face investigation. “McCandless perished because he ate toxic seeds… it may prevent other backcountry foragers from accidentally poisoning themselves” (Krakauer). People still care about Chris McCandless enough to continually investigate his cause of death. Also, to inform people to not follow Chris’ ways in. Chris made some pretty dumb mistakes all in attempts to completely escape his normal life for a wild one. Unfortunately, some of those mistakes led to his death and that is why many people still try to convey that what he did was stupid and that his ways should not be followed.
The life of Crispin demonstrates how political, social and economic aspects were when the nobles provided protection for the lands that was not owned but used by the citizens. Crispin lived a hard life being chased down for something that he could not have stopped from happening. Avi showed the culture and the little freedoms in the 14th century
Although everyone must explore and be adventurous to find who they are, they should do it in a rational way. In my point of view Chris McCandless was suicidal when he decided to enter the wild. John Krakauer, the author of Into the Wild, led us to believe through the shaved clean cut pictures of Chris that he was going to come home. However, I believe Chris did not intend to come home because of his unreasonable thinking and his unwillingness to prepare himself for the wild.
