The Crash- Personal Narrative I struggle out of bed, and wake up to a chilly winter morning. One of those mornings that make your cheeks redden from the first whip of the cold winter air, and an almost immediate tensing of your muscles. Having no time to spare I have to get into my car without being able to warm it up. Making me have to battle the cold for the six block trip to the high school parking lot to meet up with my friend for our morning ritual of smoking a cigarette. I jump out of my freezing car and get into his S-10 pickup. Today was a little different though, I had a new cd called Monster Magnet that I popped into his cd player to listen to as we drove around. We make our way to the edge of the parking lot being careful not to light our cigarettes before we're out of the view of the cameras. We turn onto the busy street accelerating up to the speed limit, as we're both jamming out to the song called Space Mother. We approach a green light in the right lane of traffic, going by a big line of cars in the opposite lane waiting to turn left. In a spilt second my improving mood was struck with shock, as we approached a newly changed yellow light, my friend gives the gas a quick tap to boost his speed a little bit, mean while I can see the big oil field truck turning right into our path. I'm frozen in fear not being able to say anything. While my friend was unable to see because his view is blocked from the up coming intersection by the traffic in the lane next to him. My hands are stuck to the dash to help brace my self for the impact, as he steps on the brakes. I hear the very brief squealing of our pickups tires. Then came the crumpling of the smaller S-10 as it impacted the one ton pickup at 40 mph. Sending me straight into the windshield and making a perfect head shape indentation in the glass, while popping the entire windshield out. My knee area on my pants had taken the red paint off the dash. My knees had smashed the dash into three different section.
The racecar was not the most creative or what some would call beautifully designed. But the owner and his father worked for weeks on that little wooden block to turn it into something the ten-year-old boy could be proud to race. A previous race showed what needed to be done for a car to make it in the top five. After careful designing, sanding, painting, and graphite the car was finished.
In the Oscar award winning movie Crash, directed by Paul Haggis, a network of characters portray the lifestyles of different races in Los Angeles. In the movie, characters “crash” into one another, similar to pinballs, to spur new emotions and explain their actions. A main character Anthony, an African American male, steadily tries to prove why he does not and will not fall into the black male thug stereotype. He was slightly close minded and repeatedly had a negative outlook towards his environment. Anthony created contradictions between what he said and what his actual intentions were. His actions were guided by his environment and further analysis of them will prove his motivation.
For most people, becoming a parent is one of the greatest moments in their lives. I never understood the true meaning of love until I became a father. Little did I know; I would also learn the tragedy of loss.
Little did I know at the time, but this was going to be the longest bus ride of my life. A bus ride that was going to take me halfway across the state of California, it was going to feel like I was traveling through the last four years of my troubled teen life.
My car is getting old, so because of normal wear and tear I perform a monthly preventive maintenance check. That means it is better to find and fix a small problem now then to discover a big expensive problem later. I start by opening the hood to check out the engine and its various components.
“You got him! Nice shot man! You did amazing on it,” my brother congratulated me.
I woke up with a sharp pain in my chest and head. Around me was the car, it was wrecked and little to no cars nearby. I racked my brain to remember what happened. I was at home and I needed to go somewhere, I got in the car and started driving. The last thing i remember, was the truck coming towards me. then it all went white. I gasped. "the truck, it hit me and I must of passed out." I checked myself. nothing broken, that's good. My phone was smashed so I couldn't call anyone to tell them that I crashed. My brother, Williams house wasn't far so I would walk there.
Then the accident happened and my perspective changed. I heard a scream. My sister yelled “HELP!!” I watched as what was happening was moving by me speedily, not waiting for me to catch up. It all happened in a blur as I ran out to see what happened. My brother had jumped out in front of the skid steer while it was rolling down the hill. His leg had become wedged between the van at the bottom of the hill and the skid steer fork. There was blood everywhere. My dad was not home. He was at work so he could not come right away. My mom had to move the big van
There is nothing better than sitting on your front porch drinking warm apple cider while the wind whips at your cheeks, moments like this is why fall in my favorite season. I love watching the out the car window to see the brightly colored leaves gathered on the ground or the neighborhood kids sitting on their porch carving pumpkins. Fall leaves us with many activities to do in the chilly October air, like jump in piles of leaves or pick out pumpkins and the pumpkin patch. One of my favorite fall activities is picking apples. My family owns two apple trees that we pick every year. I always play a game with myself where I try to reach the highest apple on the trees. With our apples we usually make them into delicious treats or just eat them
Crash! My book fell to the floor. I picked it up and went out to the hall. It was empty, so I looked at my clock and I was an hour late for my class. I must have been tired. I started to sprint to my class, but then I woke up.
With music blasting, voices singing and talking, it was another typical ride to school with my sister. Because of our belated departure, I went fast, too fast. We started down the first road to our destination. This road is about three miles long and filled with little hills. As we broke the top of one of the small, blind hills in the middle of the right lane was a dead deer. Without any thought, purely by instinct I pulled the wheel of the car to the left and back over to the right. No big deal but I was going fast. The car swerved back to the left, to the right, to the left. Each time I could feel the car scratching the earth with its side. My body jolted with the sporadic movements of the car. The car swerved to the right for the last time. With my eyes sealed tight, I could feel my body float off the seat of the car.
As I slowly wake to the sounds of ocean waves and the smell of hot chocolate I reach and grab my phone. As I get out of bed and began to get ready I play my favorite songs singing loud and off key without a care in the world. As I walk down stairs the aroma of chocolate chip pancakes fills air. As I sit down to eat the taste dancing on my tongue, I can’t help but smile with glee. Once I finished eating I get in a cab that takes me to rehearsal for dancing with the stars. My partner Sasha Farber and I eminently begin working on our samba. We run through it so many times I feel like I can do it in my sleep.
I always hear those old sayings. In the course of one day I can hear them about everything from retraining old dogs to getting up early. I think they make sense and I even ponder on some of them, but I never really thought one might mean as much to me, or become as realistic as it has become in my life. The clichés about telling those you love, how you feel, before it is too late and the ones about living every day like it is your last have an all new meaning to me.
The first time that I tried something completely new was when I went on a roller coaster. I tried it because I was bored of doing the same thing and wanted a go at something new. I was extremely scared at first and never used to try new things but that one time. It also taught me to keep trying new things even though they might be scary.
People could say that my life is similar to that of a car ride; where there are bumps in the road that can or cannot be avoided; when there are times when the car ride is rough or smooth; when it is lonely or populated with loved ones; and how the car will keep going at different speeds until it has run out of gas. My life has been filled with its typical ups and downs, excitements and fears, and its fair share of accomplishments and failures. I come from a world that I did not want to be a part of, but looking back on it now, I feel that the events I experienced in my past have shaped me into who I am today.
