What a person wears is not just a fashion statement anymore, it is a statement of psychological warfare. Clothes not only affect the body but the brain as well, putting the wearer into a different psychological state. The controversy of school uniforms, both in private and public schools has been an ongoing debate with valid points from both sides. A Co-Principal from the Newcomb Academy, Joe Palumbo was quoted saying “Just slapping clothes on kids won't improve a school, but uniforms accompanied by other reforms can make a difference. They also prevent the display of gang colors and symbols. School uniforms make getting ready for school faster and easier which improves punctuality and they save parents money overall. Students dressed in uniforms are more positively perceived by teachers and peers. Most parents and educators support mandatory school uniforms, and most importantly student’s legal right to free expression remains intact even with school uniforms. Insignias and school colors bring out a sense of community, confidence and discipline, so why hate plaid? (School Uniform Debate). Although the fashion may be subjective, it’s important to understand how wearing a uniform may psychologically affect adolescents. Schools have adopted a uniform policy in order to establish a positive psychological message of professionalism. It creates a sense of school community and maintains a sense of modesty and equality.
