In this article I chose and read about, two men who were puppeteers (Alfonso Lázaro de la Fuente and Raúl García Pérez) were accused of mentioning terrorism in their street puppet show at a recent carnival celebration. The terrorist group is called ETA and the puppeteers mentioned support to them during their performance with the use of a banner. In addition to the mention of terrorism, the show was quite vulgar depicting scenes of hanging, stabbing, and beating of people. These actions performed raised awareness from spectating parents and led them to call local police and have them arrested. Leading performers were like celebrities with a number of fans. Theatre was an intricate part of the social ladder. In the overall scheme of things the actors and actresses played an important part in making the theatre what it was. Without the performers there wouldn’t really be theatre, so in order to understand the eighteenth century British theatre the performers of that era need to be understood.
The historical fiction novel, The Master Puppeteer By Katherine Paterson, Jiro, the main character, decides to take up an opportunity to get food and shelter and and a little bit of money for his starving family. This book takes place in a time of discontent and poverty of the eighteenth century in the japanese city of Osaka. The primary conflict is Jiro trying to get food and money to support his family. When Jiro decides to enter a forbidden room for some privacy to practice his role for the play that was coming up, he finds the sword of the beloved outlaw Saburo, who turns out to be working at the theater. Since its creation the Spanish Golden Age Theatre has held an important role in the Spanish society. The golden age theatre was from 1590-1681. During this era, the Golden Age had a huge influence over the Latin American theatre world. Spain in particular saw a monumental increase in the production of live theatre. Before the Golden Age era, live theatre was non-existence. The production of live theatre became popular and was attended by both lower and higher class of people. In addition women was allowed to act in theatre plays with men. Before the Golden Age, male actors played female character roles. Over a period of time, live theatre plays started to incorporate religion, comedy and tragedy performances. Spain also introduced its own forms and genres of theatre with the development of the zarzuela. The genre zarzuela is a lyric-dramatic genre that alternates between spoken and singing acting. Zarzuela started to influence many Hispanic countries and Cuba developed their own traditions of Zarzuela.
Elizabethan times in the 1600s was a progression for the world of the theater. A period named after Queen Elizabeth I of England, it is from this period that modern day society has its foundation for the entertainment industry. From the violence that was prevalent because of the Black Death, people turned to the theater for its poetry and romance. During this time period, there were two types of theatrical performances that were available for the people’s viewing, comedies or tragedies. These two genres were never really intertwined until the time of William Shakespeare. His play, Romeo and Juliet, is an example of both a comedy and a tragedy. It starts off as a comedy with Romeo weeping like a baby because of his love Rosaline, who did not love him back and ends as a tragedy when Romeo and Juliet, a pair of star crossed lovers, commit suicide because the lost of each other. It was also during Shakespeare’s time that writer were finally acknowledged by the people. Before this time, writers were not considered upper classman. Another group of people that began to rise into a higher social class were the actors. Actresses were not present back then because women were not allowed on stage. It was considered unladylike to have a female actor. Men played all the parts. Theater owners were dependent on actors to make them a profit. Rehearsals for the plays were fairly short, only lasting for about a week. The performances themselves would only show for three to four days.

“History exists only when it is “made” by the historian.” (Vince, 65). According to R.W. Vince, it is very easy for researchers to get lost between “fact” and “interpretation” when documenting theatre history. Even when scholars uncover identical pieces of information, they may each have their own personal explanations as to why these facts exist. In turn, readers must exercise critical analysis when studying scholar’s research and not fall into the trap of viewing history from the author’s perspective. Personally, I believe Leslie Read’s chapter on the “Beginnings of Theatre in Africa and the Americas” is both fact-oriented and assumption-oriented, and must be scrutinized from many angles.
The definition of terrorism has proved to be controversial as there are over a hundred possible definitions of terrorism (Hewitt, 2008). However the present definition used in UK legal systems can be found in the Terrorism Act, 2000 which states terrorism is “The use or threat of action designed to influence the government or to intimidate the public” through several means such as violence, threat and interference (Loughnane, 2012). What acts fall under the definition has been lengthened over the years.
The concept of terrorism is exceedingly difficult to define. Author Gerald Seymour first said in his book Harry’s Game that, “One man’s terrorist is another man’s freedom fighter”. Each individual may view terrorism in a different light. Because of this, there is currently no universal definition of terrorism. However, in recent years, it has become increasingly more important to form a definition of terrorism, especially while working in the media.

However its origins mainly lie in the early years of the last century. It was the initial establishment of companies such as Bertha Waddell’s in Scotland and Esme Church’s in the north of England that thoroughly established the main roots of TIE.
All great tragedies involve to varying degrees the psychological downfall of the protagonist. To explicate this point it is a simple matter to draw upon two tragedies that have remained famous through the ages. They are ‘The Spanish Tragedy’ by Thomas Kyd and the filmic adaption of Shakespeare’s tragedy ‘Macbeth’ by Roman Pollanski. Yet, terrorism is a broad topic and having searched for the true meaning of terrorism, the universal definition of terrorism does not exist. The UN Security Council Resolution 1566 (2004) gives a definition of terrorism as “criminal acts…against civilians, committed with the intent to cause death or serious bodily injury, or taking of hostages, with the purpose to provoke a state of terror in the general public or in a group of persons..” Also, the United States have defined terrorism under the Federal Criminal Code, Title 18.
