Balancing Fracking: Economic Needs & Environmental Impacts

What has served as an argument between businessmen and environmentalists for many years is the process of fracking. Hydraulic fracturing is a process in which people drill into the earth, and then, at high pressure, a water mixture is sent down to release the natural gas from the shales. This process essentially fractures the rock the release natural gas. The reason for all the arguments is that businessmen want the money and value that natural gas has for energy, while environmentalists point out that the process hurts both people and the environment. Fracking should be regulated to the extent so that it does not affect the environment, because it does have the possibility to hurt people and the environment. But it still needs to happen …show more content…

Hydraulic fracturing is a dangerous procedure to those who live around it, so regulations on fracking should be more strict. First of all, the process of fracking is found to contaminate tap water. According a Yale study on fracking, there have been numerous reports by citizens across the country of fouled tap water. Some of the tap water has even turned bubbly and flammable, which means there is an amount of increased methane. Also, it was found that the companies involved cannot be trusted, and roughly one in five chemicals involved in the fracking process are still classified as trade secrets. The water and secrets are a danger to human health. If people drank water with methane, that could eventually lead to unconsciousness, difficulty breathing, and nausea. And because methane was found in the water near actual humans, the results could be seriously detrimental to the human population. The process of hydraulic fracturing is also shown to negatively affect babies birth weights. “Based on an analysis of more than 1.1 million births in Pennsylvania between 2004 and 2013, the new research found that babies born to mothers who lived within 1 kilometer (0.64 miles) of a fracking …show more content…

Reasons for this being fracking brings many jobs to desolate areas. For example, thousands of men are migrating to Williston, North Dakota for the jobs that are arising. (video) Furthermore, young people out of college are making six-figure salaries” (video). Because of the jobs needed for people to do the process of hydraulic fracking, men are brought into prairie towns. And now that the town has many more residents, the economy that once was nothing becoming booming. The demand for natural gas needs to match the amount of workers. Another benefit of fracking is that it is better for the environment than coal. Burning coal has negatives in that it produces particulates that increase air pollution and health dangers. Burning coal emits large amounts of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. (eia.gov) Coal emissions can cause danger to humans like respiratory illnesses, acid rain, smog, and lung diseases because it release many particulates and emissions. (eia.gov). Because of the way coal emits large amounts of CO2 into the atmosphere, it is cleaner to burn natural gas. In addition, the pollution that coal releases is a danger for human health. For this reason, fracking should remain as one of our energy sources. Nonetheless, some may argue that natural gas is not as clean as other energy sources, like solar or wind. While that may be the case, natural gas still remain as a cleaner fossil fuel,
