Let’s talk about sex! Sex is primarily for the survival of our species. It satisfies our urge to reproduce and leave generational legacies on the world. Everyone does it; everyone is here because of it. Yet in society, it 's considered to be a taboo subject to discuss. Most people are uncomfortable openly talking about it, but those who do are often criticized because of their differences. As a result, the effects of the sex being such a private topic are more harmful than simply being open about it. However, in today’s society, it not that everyone cannot be open about their sexuality, it 's mostly unacceptable for women to be open, thus posing double standards on women. Being more open about sex could also cause people to be more educated about it. Instead, lack of education causes ignorance to the subject. As a result people often view common myths and misconceptions as true facts. Also, not knowing about the subject leads our curiosity to find out more about the subject. For instance, most teens are not taught about sex in educational classes, but they learn about it from their peers. (Relate yourself in here and something about psychology) As they learn more, mostly false, information, they become curious about sex. As they become more curious, they often times engage in intercourse, unaware of the potential consequences of their actions. As a result, some teens may become teen parents, contract STDs or STIs, or regret engaging in activities. Nonetheless, all this could be avoided if people were more open to discuss sex for educational and preventative purposes. Society, for some reason, has forced a sense of morals or stereotypes on women’s behavior, speech, etc. Women being completely open about their sexuality is not as tolerable as it is for men. For example, a man is sometimes praised for openly discussing, moreso bragging, about the number of women he may have had sexual intercourse with. Society accepts men having multiple sex partners and even so commends them for doing so. For women, on the other hand, they are condemned for doing the same. Others would say obligations are important, but should be separated from sexual acts. The views of Goldman and Scruton have varied but, never the less, are important and significant in showing differing views that have changed with the time. None the less, sexual morality will be an argument of scrutiny for years to come. My own view of sexual morality, no matter how traditional, has solid grounds to stand on thanks to the works of Rodger Scruton. It uniquely allows for socially acceptable units to restrain the risks associated with sexual activities.
Looking at our past, there have been dramatic changes in the way humans view sex. Long before the 1900s individuals framed their views based on the religious institution. Due to the fact that they strongly centered their idea of sexual thought on religion, they believed that the only purpose of having sex was to procreate. As the 1920’s approached, there were various factors that changed the way individuals viewed sex. The “new women” known, as flappers were women who were confident in who they were. They changed their attire as well as their social attitude. In the 1920s, the flappers redefined sex; customs and traditions were broken and new norms were created by society.
One of the main and most discussed double standards when it comes to gender is the fact that men are praised for being promiscuous, while women are put down and called names. This double standard goes way back in the societal memory. Evolutionary psychologists suggest that these gender differences have resulted from males’ and females’ different reproductive capacities. A woman can go have sex with a man, but she then will be limited to carrying his baby for those nine months. In the meantime, the man can go out and have sex with many women, and have all of those women pregnant at the same time, thus resulting in multiple offspring. “Because men have greater reproductive capacities, it is considered beneficial for them to inseminate as many females as possible to maximize the survival of their offspring (Milhausen and Herold).” Still, the theory does not fully explain why women, even though they do not have the ability to spread their genes as quickly as men can, are expected to be sexually conservative. Perhaps the simplest explanation from an evolutionary standpoint is those women are sexually conservative because they are the ones that have to have the babies. Pregnancy is hard work, not to mention that if a woman sleeps around, she is bound to be unsure of whose baby she is carrying.
From birth, one's sexuality is shaped by society. Cultures institute behaviors that are to be seen as the societal norms, which work to constantly reinforce societal expectations of how genders should act in relation to one another. Although some may argue that one's sexuality is an innate characteristic resulting from genetic makeup, there is a large amount of evidence pointing to its social construction instead. Through the power differences between males and females, established gender roles, and drastic economic shifts, society establishes sexuality and reinforces the behaviors that are expected of its citizens.
This leads to “symbolic boundary-work,” in which people emphasize a part of their social identity in order to claim moral superiority over others who they find somehow socially or morally inferior (Fjaer, Pedersen, Sandberg 2015). However, the reality proven by researches done by the government show just 10% of parents talk to their children about sex. 10% is a very small percentage, meaning 90% of our children are exposed to learn about sex from people that are unfit. The reasons parent does not talk to their kids about sex is based on how they were raised. Most of the families are conservative. They treat sex as a taboo, talking about sex in the family feel awkward and disrespectful for them. In their time learning about sex was not as dangerous at is nowadays. Now shows in television and internet shows sex in a way that will push all teenagers to try without knowledge of it dangerous or even a knowledge of how to protect themselves if they chose to have sex. Sex education should be taught by expert that can explain well to teenagers without feeling uncomfortable and also teach and show them how to protect themselves.
Teaching sex education is like telling a kid not to go in a cookie jar. A child usually asks for a cookie and the parent replies, “No.” “Don’t go into the cookie jar.” Then that child will climb or do whatever it can to get that cookie from the jar. As you can picture, parents say no without sharing the reason behind it or how to do what’s being asked. That is the problem not only with children, but also with teenagers. Parents, teachers, and mentors use the abstinence- only approach, which means they only teach high school students not to have sex and that it’s bad, but not all the facts behind it (Crooks 2014). Teens are rebellious so they will do exactly what an adult tells them not to do. No sex is going to make teenagers want to have sex even more. Many health classes are only teaching the surface of this material when it needs to be taught in depth. It’s better to hear correct information from teenagers and parents than to have false information placed in their heads by another less informed teenager. Comprehensive sex education should be taught in high school because it educates teens on safe sex, birth control, and healthy relationships so they will be able to make effective and safe choices.
Sex is an integral part of society, it permeates the life of every person. In many cases it defines how we act and feel. However, when sex becomes the topic of conversation the conversation becomes uncomfortable and is considered taboo. In this case what taboo means is that the topic, sex, is not up for discussion for fear of social backlash. During the twentieth century, this backlash was often ostracization and shaming. These punishments are not befitting of a topic like sex, sex deserves to be discussed openly and in full view of society as both a medium of expression and an acceptable topic of conversation. Sex does not deserve to be censored or relegated to a dark corner because it should never be talked about in public. Sex provides a medium through which the true desires and indeed the true nature of a person can be expressed and examined. Meaning that an author is able to more freely express himself/herself through sex than any other topic.
Sex education should be taught in public schools because it helps prevent S.T.Ds and teenage pregnancy. The United States has one of the highest teenage pregnancy rates in the industrialized world and teens have an impact of the sexually transmitted diseases and H.I.V. epidemic facing our nation. Kids before having sex should know about this things ways to prevent it and if they get it what should they do because we don’t want them suffering and being scared for something that may have cure. As a Teen I, for one, am extremely thankful to have had a wonderful health teacher in high school and believe that everyone should be educated about sex, STI/STDs, contraception, how to say 'no', and definitely how to protect yourself in case you find yourself in danger of rape. Whereas, the Sexual Education program promotes safe sex and knowledge of the sex and it’s consequences. The motto would be, “Knowledge is Power.” As a result of this program has decreased the rate of unplanned pregnancy and sexual disease outbreak. This is why it is argued that Sexual Education should be taught in the public school system.
If comprehensive sex education is offered at schools to children, it will allow them access to more information that if the parent tried to educate them. The reasons for this are that the teachers are specially trained to teach the children this information in a way that they can understand. Having this class at schools also provides the children with textbooks which offer even more things like drawings, diagrams and accurate information about sex education. Making sure teen have accurate information about sex important making sure that they are ready for sex instead of leaving them guessing or worst using inaccurate information.

The truth is that sex education does not encourage students to do it. Sex education prevents sexual diseases and teenage pregnancy. But how? Students are taught how to use condoms. These kids are in danger of sexually transmitted diseases. Overall, sex is supposed to be responsible, which means that it must be safe for the person as well as his or her partner, and it assumes knowledge. Society has to provide classes in sexual education in order to not force adolescents to gain this knowledge on their own experience.
