The Common Problem of Absenteeism in the Field of Education
Absenteeism is a common problem encountered by teachers and others who work in the field of education. There are many reasons why some children fall into a pattern of repeated absence from school. In a number of cases, willful absence can be traced to an alienation from schooling due to poor achievement, family circumstances or behavioral causes. In some cases, parents or children simply defy the requirement to participate. This area is one in which the need for partnership between school and family is greatest. While many schools provide successful alternative programs or absenteeism intervention strategies, there will be cases where, despite the best efforts of schools and parents, the children stay away. It is clear that any unauthorized absence is of concern because of the valuable educational time which is lost and because the absence of some children is associated with inappropriate behavior in the community. Different types of absenteeism will be discussed during this essay but the main focus will be directed at truancy in which the causes and remedies will be evaluated.
The different types of absenteeism is truancy, exclusion, school closure, school phobia or other absences due to illness or bad behavior (teachers sending pupils out of class due to poor behavior). Although children who are sent outside the class are not entirely absent from the school, this can be identified as absence as they are not participating in class. It seems that none of the various Education Acts defines truancy and nor is this lack supplied the case laws. Nor indeed have the various researchers agreed a definition. Must every child who is absent from school for whatever be cla...

...that all of them are valid. Remedies that involve the parents seem to be extremely effective as the parent?s awareness can surely play a big part in combating the problem as usually a lot of parents are unaware of their children?s school life. It is also obvious that if the school improves the atmosphere and teaching methods than the pupils are more likely to want to go to school. A good teacher ? pupil relationship is also important and can ensure better school attendance Truancy is the first sign of trouble and the first indicator that a young person is giving up and losing his or her way. When pupils start skipping school than they are telling their parent?s, school officials and the community at large that they are in trouble and need help if they are to move forward in life.

Students are deprived from there leaning do to the tardy policy. A policy that is unfair this tardy policy makes students serve a 30 min detention if there even a second late to class and after multiple absences or tardies you can face legal consequences. There's many reasons why students may be late for example students need to take the city buss, bikes ,cars to school but there's always traffic so sometimes it's not the students fault , students shouldn't be given a 30 minute detention for being a couple of minutes late.

For in war . . . the common sense of some and the genius of others sees and properly applies means to ends; and naval strategy, like naval tactics, when boiled down, is simply the proper use of means to attain ends. But in peace, as in idleness, such matters drop out of mind, unless systematic provision is made for keeping them in view. ALFRED THAYER MAHAN 1. Alfred Thayer Mahan (1840–1914) was an American naval officer, considered one of the most important naval strategists of the nineteenth century.
There is a sense that parents fear truancy as if it were an infectious disease
When formulating a plan, it is important to remember that students do not exist in a vacuum. What is a problem behavior in one class may not be a problem in another; problem behavior from the home may never manifest in school. A key means of decreasing the frequency and intensity of problem behavior and reducing the need for more intrusive intervention procedures is enhancing a student's quality of life.
Students want to go to college to further their education. An advancement in education gives students more opportunities. A college diploma helps students not only get a job, but keep it and make more money. College students want to be there because they are able to invest in themselves. In college, students are able to discover new passions, learn more about themselves as an individual, make new friends, and prepare for the future. On the other hand, in high school, students are required to go. According the to Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, the Compulsory Attendance Law states that a person who has custody of a child between the ages of seven and seventeen, are required to ensure that he or she is enrolled and regularly attending any time of schooling system. If a student between the ages of seven and seventeen fails to go to school, it is the parent’s responsibility and the parent will be
...he best way to discipline the students. It also takes away from the students academically. Many problems that the school system sees start at home with the parents and the environment that the child is living in.
Student’s lack of success can occur for many reasons but some believe that that it stems from poverty. Many families are forced to work more than one job in order to maintain the household and the children end up staying at home without adult supervision. Adult supervision is needed in order to provide structure, rules, and teach children basic social skills. Social skills are essential in our daily life as it is what we use to communicate with people to get what we want or need. In my experience, I have also noticed that the majority of at risk youth come from single mom or grandparent homes. I have experienced talking to single moms or guardians who do not implement discipline at home because they do not know how to discipline. Other times, they feel bad that the child’s other parent or parents are not in the picture so they try to composite by not enforcing consequences. The mental health of a child is another important concept that schools should consider when they are dealing with troubled youth. Many students have experienced trauma in their lives that has never healed. Teaching children to properly express their emotions is something that sometimes parents do not know how to teach. Having mental health services such as counseling is a great way to help the student heal from the trauma that has been keeping them from being successful. Schools should require all student to receive a mental health screening along with their physical in order to know the student’s history and to understand and help
In the twentieth century, the sizes of schools grew in size and ideology. Schools developed legislation to bring in students that were truant. By the 1920’s and 1930’s increasing numbers of states were requiring students to attend high school and by the 1950s secondary-school attendance had become so customary that students that did not attend schools were routinely seen as “dropouts” (Tyack, 1974). It
This is when we need to step up and help the parent and the child so they don’t fall through the cracks of the education system. We need to increase parent involvement in each child education. Increasing parent involvement, begins with education the parents. Parents don’t realize or know how to get involved with their child’s education. There are many ways families can be involved in the education process. The parent is the child’s most valuable teacher for their whole life. The most benefit this will bring to the families is confidence. Teachers need to help the parents know that they can assist in their child’s education and can help them at home. There are workshops and training to help families get involved. The key is to offer incentives to the training to help increase the parent’s attendance, Communication is the one key with the parents. In today’s socially they are many ways to stay in contact with parents because of technology by email, text, or social media. Invite parent to come to the classroom and volunteer and see firsthand what a day look like for their child in the classroom. Have different events that will increase parents interest and eventually great participation. Another idea could be to send home activities that encourages family involvement. This can be activity that have the parents engage with each other and can be short and dynamic. The
This method prompts debate as many think it may be wiser if the school were to allow sign outs and thus have the knowledge of where a student is instead of forcing students to turn to truancy. Seeing as there are some unwanted consequences from this new rule, changes should be made. One of the most reasonable solutions would be to once more follow the old attendance policy, which allowed parent emails and phone calls during the day. While the school may be concerned with forgery in some cases, very few teenagers would be willing to take the time to construct a Ferris Bueller-like lie and put that amount of effort into a forged alibi. Certainly this system would be a reasonable and relatively safe measure, allowing students to sign themselves out, use their own cars, and still require parental
Absenteeism is intentional or habitual absence in the workplace. It not only reduces the productivity, but also makes the company lose a lot of money. The issue of absenteeism should not be ignored. In order to help the company to reduce the cost and increase the productivity, the employers or the managers have a responsibility to know about the causes of absenteeism and how to reduce the absenteeism. There are some common causes of absenteeism that the managers should know that, such as workplace`s bullying, workplace`s condition, employee`s health, and unfairness. In the follow part, this research paper will show you how these issues relate to the absenteeism, and will also show you how to reduce the absenteeism. Absenteeism can be prevented or reduced, the cost cause by absenteeism can also be improved. The managers should know that.
