Moreover, though his heritage/religion James still felt pressure because he couldn't identify himself at the time of growing up in a black neighborhood. with his siblings emphasizing black power, James grew up finding it difficult to identify himself as either black or white. In the novel ‘The Color of Water’, It states “I thought it would be easier if we were just one color, black or white. I didn't want to be white. My siblings had already installed the notion of black pride in me. I would have preferred that mommy were black. now, as a grown man, I feel privileged to have come from Two Worlds.”(McBride 103) In other words, James felt that he doesn't truly belong from the Black or White community but he felt that it was a privilege to come from both because both sides have to offer. Lastly, James stop pressure throughout his time in school. In the novel, it states “ I don't belong to any of those groups. I belong to the world of one God, one people. But as a kid, I preferred the black side, and often wished that mommy had sent me to black school with my friends. Instead I was stuck at that white school, P.S. 138, with white classmates who were convinced I could dance like James Brown.”(McBride 104) In other words, James felt as a outsider whenever he was at school because his white classmates usually stared at him during lunch while he was eating(because he doesn't have an good food at home); the teachers ignored him (because he’s black) but despite all these discrimination he still remained respectful toward his teachers. Nevertheless he knows that white schools offer better educational systems but he still wanted to go to a black school with his friends.
In this time, the black community in America was beginning to find their voice and stand up for what they believed in and who they truly were. The problem with James is that he didn’t know who he truly was. He didn’t understand how he could be two different things while all of his siblings identified as one. They instilled a sense of resentment toward whites in him that confused him beyond belief. This confusion left him believing that his mixed race was a curse and something that he would have to carry on his back for the rest of his life. He believed it to be a burden, as he felt that he didn’t truly belong anywhere because of it. "I thought it would be easier if we were just one color, black or white. In his memoir, on of James' main realization about his life is that in the transition from adolescence to adulthood, he learned that being mixed race wasn’t so much a curse as a blessing.
Lucy believes that even though she has gone through so much pain throughout her life, it can always be worse; there are people having more difficulties in their lives. This book is telling a story about two African American boys (Wes A and Wes P) who have the same name and grew up at same community, but they have a very different life. The author, Wes A, begins his life in a tough Baltimore neighborhood and end up as a Rhodes Scholar, Wall Streeter, and a white house fellow; The other Wes Moore begins at the same place in Baltimore , but ends up in prison for the rest of his life. Then why do they have the same experience, but still have a totally different life? Charles W. Chesnutt, a well-educated mulatto man, lived his life on ‘the color line.’ Chesnutt’s skin was very light and was sometimes mistaken for a white man. Chesnutt chose to identify himself as a black man, but in his works, his characters move back and forth across the color line and struggle with the world they exist in. The Wife of His Youth and Other Stories of the Color Line was published one year before The House Behind the Cedars and included the short story, “A Matter of Principle,” where Chesnutt clearly begins to explore what options are available to a mulatto man and his family, which will later evolve in Cedars. People seek other people who with they can identify. One must interact with others and learn from his interests and their responses to find a suitable group. The process of finding a group allows one to discover his or her own identity. Through The Color of Water, James McBride demonstrates that one perceives his identity through feedback from others as well as through his own thoughts and emotions.
Internal conflict caused by culture is a concept that Edward Hall explores in his book “Beyond Culture”. In this examination of intercultural interactions, Hall argues that people are born into the cultural prison of one’s primary culture. He then goes on to claim that from people can only be free of this prison and experiencing being lost in another (Hall). For Coates, this cultural prison is the permeating fear resulting from the blackness of his body. His internal conflict is therefore created when seeing the world of white, suburban culture. The novel “The Autobiography of an ex-colored man,” by James Johnson presents a major social issue of racial categorization that is present in today’s society. From a selected passage in the novel, the narrator is in Macon, Georgia seeking to depart to New York. From the identity map I created in class, I decided I would explore my personal connections more. The readings: “The Fat Girl”, “The Bluest Eye”, and “Between the World and Me” were the texts that stood out to me the most because they can all interlink with each other in one way or another. Naturally I would like to explore body image, race, beauty standards, and society’s expectations within the selections I chose. From the selections I chose to write my essay about I think “The Bluest Eye” is what connects the three stories the most because so much is challenged in this novel, though not all is overcome.
A main theme in this novel is the influence of family relationships in the quest for individual identity. Our family or lack thereof, as children, ultimately influences the way we feel as adults, about ourselves and about others. The effects on us mold our personalities and as a result influence our identities. This story shows us the efforts of struggling black families who transmit patterns and problems that have a negative impact on their family relationships. These patterns continue to go unresolved and are eventually inherited by their children who will also accept this way of life as this vicious circle continues.
Culture in this novel is one of the biggest themes because it brings the whole family together. Throughout the novel there is times when they have big get-togethers where they cook for everyone and they talk and eat for hours. This brings out their culture through the gathering of the family and sharing a meal which is a big part of many people?s culture. Another culture in the book is that the men to be in charge of the household. In this novel Papa is the head of the household, he makes all the decisions and whatever he says goes. Finally it is culture for the women of the Bahamas to stay strong, proud of their heritage, and stay very traditional to their families and country.
