The City and the Stars by Arthur Clarke sets place a billion years in the future. The story sets place in the city of Diaspar, the last habitable city on Earth. This utopian city is enclosed from the outside world, and Diaspar is almost completely run by a central computer that regulates life in Diaspar. The city’s population is made up of what is thought to be the last of the human race. The city of Diaspar keeps a record of every person in the city’s memory banks, and the people of Diaspar receive these memories throughout their 1,000-year lifespans. One significant difference between the novel and the world we live in today is that the people of Diaspar lives get recycled, so they die and are reborn with knowledge of their previous life. …show more content…

The main character in The City and the Stars is Alvin, at the beginning of the novel he is just a regular young guy. But, Alvin is special. Alvin has no prior memories in the memory banks, so the computer has no memories to implant in his mind. Alvin is very curious; he wants to leave Diaspar and see what is outside.

Another major character in The City and the Stars is Hilvar. Halvar is the son of the leader of Airlee, and he is very intelligent. When Alvin comes to Airlee Halvar is appointed to show Alvin around Lys. Halvar eventually becomes one of Alvin’s closest friend.

Another major character in the novel is Generac. Generac is Alvin’s tutor, and he is also an elder statesman in Diaspar. In the book, Alvin turns to Generac for information. Generac is surprisingly able to connect with Alvin, and Generac see’s how special Alvin is. Also when Diaspar finally makes contact with Lys, Generac is one of the first people to leave Diaspar in millions of years.

Another main character in The City and the Stars is a jester named Khedron. He sometimes uses his exclusive access to inside information about Diaspar to create elaborate pranks. Alvin feels like he has a connection to Khedron, but he sometimes finds him annoying. Clarke wrote The City and the Stars to entertain and to spread the message that the human race should always have the drive to explore and have the courage to do what they think is right. Arthur C. Clarke also wrote The City and the Stars to show what he thinks the Earth’s technology will be like in the future. In the novel, we see many future technologies such as robot butlers and many renewable energy sources. Arthur C.
