Elisa's character in, The Chrysanthemums by John Steinbeck on pg. 281, is described as strong and dry woman with a green thumb who works fervently in her garden, taking special care of her prized chrysanthemums. She is the wife of a farmer and plays her role very well. They live in a nice home and apparently are doing well financially. She seems to be everything you'd expect a wife to be. As the story unravels, she is approached by a strange man offering his pot repairing services. At first Elisa is apprehensive but is easily befriended by his faked interest in her gardening.
