Do you believe that people can actually change? Change in a character is seen in the play, “the Christmas Carol,” written by Charles Dickens. This play is about a grumpy old man, who is obsessed with wealth, is visited by the three Spirits of Christmas. Christmas Past, Present, and Yet - To - Come. During the visits of each spirit, he slowly realizes how selfish and rude he is. After that realization, he opts to be a better man. For many years, Scrooge was unsympathetic, and impolite. However, the three spirits present to him what he has become, and how he can change his ill-mannered ways by realizing his mistakes. After The spirits present to him what they had to say, Scrooge decides to change. Furthermore, Scrooge is a changed man in the end, because of the efforts of the Spirits of Christmas Past, Present, and Yet - To - Come. Scrooge, unknowing of it, was a churlish, insolent man, who swindled the poor for their money. Moreover, he was quite uncharitable and selfish, as well that he would not give to the less fortunate. For instance, Scrooge stated that the poor should be put …show more content…
This was shown in a variety of ways, starting with how he becomes charitable, and gracious. In particular, Scrooge decided to help the less fortunate, and donated a generous amount of his wealth. In the meantime, Scrooge became a friendly, sociable man, and changed his mind, accepting his nephew’s invitation for Christmas dinner. Accordingly, he engages in the conversation, and succeeded in enlightening the night. One last way Scrooge changes is that he decided to use his wealth for good. To do that, he quite graciously gave Cratchit a raise, and brought journals for the children to note their wonderful ideas and stories in. Aside from that, the raise Cratchit received would have brought his family out of poverty. Overall, Scrooge finds the goodness in his heart, and altered his unpleasant
Many people have transformed, or changed, throughout their lives, either in a positive or a negative way. But what does it mean to transform? That can be different between people and the way they think. Some think it's something unacceptable and you should try avoiding it, others want to transform themselves. To transform, you just need to see the true meaning of things and be happy. It is possible to change, but you need a reason to change. You need motivation, just like how you need the motivation to do the things you love to do.
“hear me! I am not the man I was. I will not be the man I must have been but for this intercourse.” “I will honour Christmas in my heart, and try to keep it all the year. I will live in the Past, the Present, and the Future. The Spirits of all Three shall strive within me. I will not shut out the lessons that they teach. Oh, tell me I may sponge away the writing on this stone!” (Dickens, Stave 4, Page 84) Finally, Scrooge changed for good.
When we first met Scrooge, we are informed, and also observe that he is cold, miserly, and bitter. However, after the visit of the Ghost of Christmas future, Scrooge changes into a generous and cheerful man. It is clear that something must have caused a man who is really nice, turn into a mean and nasty person, in this case it was the Industrial Revolution.
She said “ …father said you can come home… “, so it really wasn’t his choice if he could go home to his family or not, it was his father’s. But now, Scrooge is a senior citizen, he has gray hair that drapes down on the sides of his face, and he has an elongated jaw with a nose like Gru from Despicable Me. He also wore a nightgown most, if not all, of the movie. Scrooge also has a humped back and he walks with a cane around town. In addition, to how he dresses Scrooge has a very crabby personality. For example, he walks around town with a scowl printed on his face, and as he walks by carolers they stop singing! He also walks and talks about the people he passed. In his mind, if they are children they are delinquents, if they are happy they are
Over time, Scrooge helps the Cratchits out and becomes like a second father to Tiny Tim who doesn’t end up dying like the ghost predicted. People are confused by Scrooge's sudden change in behavior, but he just goes on without any regard to it. The narrator closes the story with a final, impressionable statement, "and so, as Tiny Tim observed, God bless us, Every one!"
Scrooge had been taken to Bob Cratchit’s house by the Ghost of Christmas Present. When they arrived at Cratchit’s house he saw that Cratchit had children and when he noticed that he said “On his meager earnings! What foolishness!” This meaning that Scrooge thought it was foolish of him to have children when he earned so little. Also when he learned that Tiny Tim might die he said “No, no, kind Spirit! Say he will be spared!” This reveals that Scrooge doesn't want Tiny Tim to die. After learning this Scrooge became a more charitable person. He saw how happy the Cratchit family was when they only had a little. Scrooge came to a realization that maybe life is not all about money. In conclusion, after realizing that money isn't everything Scrooge became a more giving, charitable
"External heat and cold had little influence on Scrooge. No warmth could warm, no wintry weather chill him. No wind that blew was bitterer than he…Nobody ever stopped in the street to say, with gladsome looks, ‘My dear Scrooge, how are you? When will you come to see me?’. No beggars implored him to bestow a trifle, no children asked him what it was o’clock, no man or woman ever once in all his life inquired the way to such and such a place, of Scrooge."
Scrooge was harsh because he refused to give Cratchit time off to be with his family for Christmas. Even though Scrooge knew he was a hard worker and always did his work correctly he still made it difficult for Cratchit when he requested but he still gave it to him eventually. Eventually, Scrooge did become considerate and not only thought about himself when it came to some things. Such as when he bought the turkey and got it sent to Cratchit's house because he knew Cratchit has a big family and the turkey would be big enough to feed all of them. Finally, I think this is one the main events that showed that Scrooge changed for the better.
Ebenezer Scrooge is a very frugal man who believes in his government and that the taxes that he pays are enough the help the poor. This is shown when two gentlemen asked for some donations so they could help the poor. Scrooge believes that those who are poor are lazy and do not deserve to be helped by the rich when the government has laws and programs that assist them, even though it is not enough. Scrooge is a representation of the upper class in Victorian England because of his wealth and his views on the poor. In Stave I, he is also seen saying, “If they would rather die, they had better do it, and decrease the surplus population” (Dickens). This shows that Scrooge believes that those who are in need should just die rather than encumber
He awakes and prepares for the arrival of the second spirt. Eventually, he arrives and the spirit takes Scrooge into Christmas morning. They arrive at the home of Bob Cratchit, the clerk of Scrooge, where they gaze at the family preparing a Christmas meal they can’t possibly afford. Tiny Tim, the youngest son of Cratchit is disabled and weak. Scrooge asks the spirit if he will survive, but sullenly the spirit replies he would not. The journey of Christmas present comes to a close when the spirit and Scrooge confront two starving children. This impacts the old mans heart as he realizes that he should’t be greedy, and he has the ability to change the lives of the
Charles Dickens, a well known writer, was born in Portsmouth, England, in the year 1812. Dickens lived in various places as he was growing up, which included Chatham and London. As a teen, Charles dropped out of school and soon became an actor (“Charles Dickens” Britannica). He had a rough life as a child. Because Charles’s dad had trouble feeding his large family, he was forced to be locked up. As a young adult, Dickens was headed towards his successful career by helping with the London Newspaper (Dickens 994). All of his novels were written for his audience’s happiness and to please them (995). Dickens passed away in 1870 (994).
During this past week, we have been reading a drama called A Christmas Carol. We also watched a movie on A Christmas Carol. The drama and the movie had similarities and differences. in both of them there is the same problem. Scrooge is a very mean man and almost all that he says is, “Bah Humbug!” He despises christmas and is very bitter. He never gives to the less fortunate, sings, or even smiles! A christmas carol, the drama and the movie are very different and the same at the same time.
...t, the Present, and the Future. The Spirits of all Three shall strive within [him]." With this still resonating in his mind, he jumps out of bed and immediately begins setting things right. He buys a turkey bigger than Bob Cratchit's son and sends it to him, and instead of being rude to the Poulterer, he pays for a cab to get them to Cratchit's home. He then goes out with joy in his heart and bumps into a man who asked him to donate money to the poor the day before. As opposed to being unkind and cruel, the new and improved Scrooge donates a large sum of money to the cause happily. This kind, happy, and generous man is a complete change from the stingy and unkind Scrooge from Christmas Eve. If someone this awful can change, anyone and everyone can do the same. They just need a little push in the right direction.
Ebenezer Scrooge was a very selfish man that felt as though he gave enough. Dickens shows his feeling towards giving donations, when two men asked him to donate to the workhouses Scrooge says, “I wish to be left alone...I don’t make merry myself at Christmas and I can’t afford to make idle people merry. I help to support the establishment I mentioned -- they cost enough”(Dickens 14). Scrooge does not care about people and although he donates he feels he should not have to because it is not his fault that they are in that situation. Instead of turning the men away he could have gave them something because Scrooge is well off and alone. Later Marly points says, “‘Business!...Mankind was my business. The common welfare was my business; charity, mercy, forbearance, and benevolence, were, all, my business.’”(Dickens 23-24), this will later show Scrooge how he should stop being selfish because it is all apart of
...tion, that supports this belief. Scrooge wasn’t greedy because he was wealthy, he wasn’t rich at all, he was just so fixated on making more money that before he knew it, he was materialistic, which in the long run was the reason why he was so unhappy.
