The religion of Christianity all started with the birth of the founder Jesus Christ. He was born a few miles from the origin of the religion in Jerusalem, present day Israel. Christ is believed to be the son of God, who sent his son to free people from sin. The first Christians were Jewish, however eventually Christianity broke off of Judaism as its own religion. As more and more people started to follow the beliefs and teachings of Christ, the religion started to expand. Missionaries such as Paul spread the beliefs of Christ throughout the lands to increase the importance of the religion. In Rome, Christians were prosecuted until Emperor Constantine made Christianity the official religion of the Roman Empire, and helped spread the religion through communications with the empire. Groups like the Catholic Church, the Eastern Orthodox, and the Protestantism worship the religion today and still spread the teachings and beliefs of Christ. Today Christianity is the largest religion in the world with over 2 billion followers and can be found on over 6 continents. It consists of the Old Testament which is primarily based upon the Hebrew Bible. The New Testament deals with first-century Christianity and accompanied the spread of Christianity around the world. The bible is the teachings and beliefs of Jesus Christ and is still used today in Christian’s churches today. The Bible also has texts that are sacred to both Judaism and Christianity.
