The Chosen Path
In the short story, "A Sound of Thunder" a man named Eckels tests the delicacy of life while traveling back in time to hunt the most ferocious predator to ever walk the planet. Ray Bradbury develops the theme that every choice made has an effect so we must be cautious of our actions in times of confidence, fear and guilt. Eckels is a young man, determined to hunt for his biggest catch yet and he enters TIME SAFARI INC. hoping they can give him the thrill he's been looking for. He has hunted many things like tigers, wild boars and elephants but has never hunted something like this. In his excitement he, "waved a check for ten thousand dollars to the man behind the desk" and was ready for his safari (Bradbury 1). He showed confidence

by investing a great deal of money into his hunting and was very eager to get started. He chose to give the check to the man and sign the waiver, meaning he accepted the responsibility and consequences that followed him during his journey. Eckels, Travis the safari guide and other hunters entered the time machine and went back 60 million years. Once they reached the past, they stepped onto a narrow metal path "floating six inches above the earth" symbolizing the path of life and how going off it can cause someone to wander aimlessly (3). There is great consequences and a fee for stepping off the path because doing so can change the future. They prepared their guns and out of the forest a tyrannosaurus rex approached with mighty stride and "teeth like daggers" (6). The great beast was proven to be too much for Eckels and he was frightened, “'This time, I figured wrong. I've met my match and I admit it’" and he ran in the face of fear (6). Once he was in the past he had two choices, hunting or hiding and he was not brave enough to continue the hunt. He was selfish and chose his own safety, risking the lives of others and straying off the path. He was aware of what would happen if he went off the path and had to pay the price that came with the choices he made.
He made the choice to hide when he was afraid and stepped on a butterfly while fleeing. They returned to the time machine and arrived in present time but Eckels noticed something odd about the area and his body "screamed in silence" as he pondered what he had changed from stepping off the path (9). Every choice Eckels has ever made led up to this point in his life and then he saw the sign, ”TYME SERFARI INC" (10). He felt the guilt inside of him as he pulled a lifeless butterfly off of his shoe. The butterfly was a symbol for life and how delicate it is. By stepping on one butterfly he eliminated generations of butterflies and as a result, changed the future. Eckels begs Travis to fix the damage and start over but it is not possible, "He heard Travis shift his rifle, click the safety catch and raise the weapon. There was a sound of thunder" (10). Eckels was guilty of stepping off the metal path and begged for help. Eckels made poor choices and his last one was to plead for help but Travis made his choice as well. Eckels kills a butterfly which ironically was the reason he was killed. Bradbury develops the theme that we should be cautious of our actions in moments of confidence, fear and guilt because every
choice has an effect.
In the Time of the Butterflies is a historical fiction novel by Julia Alvarez based on events that occurred during the rule of Trujillo in the Dominican Republic. This book shows the hardships the Mirabal Sisters had to go through while being part of an underground effort to overthrow the dictatorship of Trujillo. It also shows that ultimately, it was their courage that brought upon their own death. Alvarez wants us to understand anyone and everyone has the potential to be courageous.
Early Thunder by Jean Fritz shows how the contrasting points of view of the Tories and Whigs in Salem had a divisive effect on this New England town, causing neighbors to turn against one another.
What happens when predators become prey? Does the prey fight and survive or surrender to their fate of being hunted? In “The Sound of Thunder” by Ray Bradbury and “Being Prey” by Val Plumwood you read about the deadly consequences of becoming prey. The conflicts of each story are alike, as well as the setting and protagonists of the stories. The two texts resemble one another through their literary elements.
Both science fiction stories Nethergrave and A Sound of Thunder were amazing stories. Although I preferred A Sound of Thunder over the Nethergrave. A Sound of Thunder had more excitement it also relates to life a little more. A sound of thunder tells us how small mistakes spiral into huge ball kind of like a snowball effect and can turn into a disaster. Which is true in situations you have to think before doing? Nethergrave on the other hand was slow and didn’t relate to the real world as much as A Sound Of Thunder. It didn’t keep me wanting to read more or predicting, what will happen next? A sound of thunder was written by Ray Bradbury originally published 1952. Nethergrave was written by Gloria Skurzynski. These two stories go way back

In the short story, “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell, the protagonist, Rainsford, is a smart, clever, resilient man who keeps a cool head in stressful and dangerous situations. Rainsford is not allowed to leave the island he washes up on after he falls off the yacht he was traveling on, because the mentally disturbed general wants to hunt people with Rainsford. Rainsford makes a deal with the general to win his freedom. If Rainsford can evade Zaroff for three nights, then Rainsford is free to leave the island. During the hunt, Rainsford must think quickly and be resourceful in order to stay alive. Rainsford is an extremely experienced hunter who writes books about his hunting experiences. When Rainsford is running from the
His negligence and the mistakes he makes in the past causes negative effects in the present time of 2055. Eckels’ inability to follow directions makes him try to undo the harm he has done. Eckels offers money to fix the disasters he caused. In addition, his mistakes ultimately cost him his life. Similarly, like Eckels, who tries to use money to fix his bad decision, so do people in society try to use money to fix their mistakes. In “Sound of Thunder,” Eckels indirectly speaks about the fact that all living things are important. Currently, society is immensely concerned with nurturing and protecting the wildlife. In addition, Eckels seems to be egotistical. There are many people in society that are overconfident and think they know better than anyone else. Also, like Eckels, people in society have no respect about what others are warning them, or sharing with them. Finally, even the smallest decision made, or actions taken by someone, will have either a positive or a negative effect, resulting in consequences going forward. For example, if a student watches their favorite show on a school night, and does not study, the student will probably do badly on the test, as well as perhaps bear the consequence of being punished by their parents. Every small action has consequences, and those consequences are sometimes foreshadowed by events
While staying at Mel’s home, the adolescent female narrator personifies the butterfly paperweight. The life cycle begins with the narrator “hearing” the butterfly sounds, and believing the butterfly is alive. The butterfly mirrors the narrator’s feelings of alienation and immobility amongst her ‘new family’ in America. She is convinced the butterfly is alive, although trapped inside thick glass (le 25). The thick glass mirrors the image of clear, still water. To the adolescent girl, the thick glass doesn’t stop the sounds of the butterfly from coming through; however, her father counteracts this with the idea of death, “…can’t do much for a dead butterfly” (le 31). In order to free the butterfly, the narrator throws the disk at a cabinet of glass animals, shattering the paperweight, as well as the glass animals. The shattering of the glass connects to the shattering of her being, and her experience in fragility. The idea of bringing the butterfly back to life was useless, as the motionless butterfly laid there “like someone expert at holding his breath or playing dead” (le 34). This sense of rebirth becomes ironic as the butterfly did not come back to life as either being reborn or as the manifestation of a ghostly spirit; instead its cyclic existence permeates through the narrator creating a transformative
One individual’s action may alter the lives, destinies, and future of millions of other people. In A Sound of Thunder, the killing of a single butterfly alters the course of evolution. Bradbury observes how a careless action by one traveler alters the destiny of others. “With the death of that one caveman, a billion others yet unborn are throttled in the womb” (Bradbury 3). Creating destiny is about being careful in actions. Human beings should learn how to create destiny by sticking to or changing their actions. A person should not reject doing one act of kindness even when it appears to be of no significant importance, neither should one commit a bad act even if it appears to cause an insignificant harm. Bradbury emphasizes on the significance of this argument, “destroy a single man, and you destroy a whole race of people and eventually an entire life history” (Bradbury 3). A single act of good or bad can impact or alter the future in unimaginable ways.
The leaves crunch under your feet. Wind is blowing through the trees and through your hair.Your heart leaps every time you hear or see something move. You are hunting. This is something both Rainsford, from “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell, and Travis, from “A Sound of Thunder” by Ray Bradbury, love to do. In “The Most Dangerous Game,” Rainsford gets stranded on an unkempt island and has to, as a game, try to outsmart the man who owns the island without getting killed. In “A Sound of Thunder,” Travis goes back in time with a group of people to kill a t-rex. Travis and Rainsford are both similar because hunting is a big part in both of their day-to-day lives, and it’s something they both love a lot. As I said earlier, Rainsford and
“Its…it’s them again. They’s ridin’ tonight.” A night rider was someone who committed nocturnal and racist acts of violence against blacks. In the historical fiction, Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry, by Mildred D. Taylor, racism is a highly active issue within the Logan’s daily lives. One example of specifically the Logan children dealing with racism is the Black vs. White schooling system which was considered “separate but equal”. However, they were not equal in many areas including transportation. The black kids had to walk to school, whereas the white kids were given a bus. The Logan kids made the decision to take action towards the bus in response to being constantly bothered by the bus. This action left the bus out of commission for
On a cloudless September afternoon, a hunter stands with a defeated look upon his face. He sighs in disappointment as he watches a bull run through the aspens. He is still shaking in excitement and frustration. He did everything he could, but the bull didn't live that long by being stupid. I had never had that type of rush before, even though I had been defeated I was hooked on bow hunting.
The Path, as described by Travis, ‘floats six inches above the earth. Doesn’t touch so much as one grass blade, flower or tree. It’s an anti-gravity metal’. The Path was placed by Time Safari to prevent hunters from touching the earth as it could potentially ruin the course of history. Later, Travis tells Eckels that ‘the stomp of [his] foot, on one mouse, could start an earthquake, the effects of which could shake [their] earth and destinies down through Time, to their very foundations’. The Path as described in the short story could potentially coincide with the Path of Life that we need to face. We all have a destiny ahead of us, a destiny that we can’t even imagine yet. Straying from that path may cost us something in the future that could have given us a grand opportunity, and we don’t even know it. It might seem small in the beginning. Once it all adds up, though, something valuable could be lost just by making one careless decision. The Path in the story has a capital ‘P’. Capitalizing something gives it importance, and obviously, the Path has importance. At first, Eckels looks arrogant and backlashes with sarcastic questions and comments. Because he did not listen to Travis, he stumbles off of the Path, which causes the entire future they’d come to know to fall into
In James Martin’s book, The Jesuit Guide to (Almost) Everything: A Spirituality for Real Life, he outlines the different paths through religion that people can take. In the chapter, “The Six Paths”, he outlines each path, describing how they work, and what the benefits and pitfalls to each are. The six paths are: belief, independence, disbelief, return, exploration, and confusion. I tend to view myself more closely aligned with disbelief, with a dash of confusion and exploration thrown in. Through my experiences in life, I end up finding the most disagreement, personally, with the Path of Belief, and Disbelief. I find the pitfalls heavily outweigh the benefits of those paths, and in such I have commonly found a non-welcoming, elitist environment among people on those paths of religion. Before explaining my positions on
If you were unprepared for what you are up against because you never thought of the danger with the adventure, what would you do? Eckles and Plumwood both had bad experiences from being unprepared. From one being able to survive to the other being shot by a friend because of his actions. The settings f these stories “A Sound of Thunder” and “Being Prey” really affected each main character and he conflicts they faced.
