Characterization: are the methods by which a writer creates people in a story so that they seem to actually exist. Some of the details that characterize Yunior from “How to Date a Browngirl, Blackgirl, Whitegirl, or Halfie” is that he had a different kind of stereotype for different kinds of women, that he tried to hide his true self to date different kinds of girls, he lied to get what he wanted, he never respected girls in front of his friends so that he wouldn’t be in trouble, and he looked at girls in a very sexual aspect.

It is an intentional product of the speaker and is contradictory to his/her emotions and actions. Verbal irony is often stated in the form of a metaphor or simile. One example of verbal irony is when in” Hey Howya Doin”, the tall husky guy asked the other joggers Hey Howya Doing, you would assume that he was saying it in a nice way because he truly care about their lives, but in reality he said it to make them confused and distracted from what they were thinking.
Situational Irony: an outcome that turns out to be very different from what was expected, the difference between what is expected to happen and what actually does. One example of a situational irony is when on “GWH” Will, the janitor of the school is the one who solves the difficult math problem; everyone was expecting that one of Prof. Lambeau students solve the math problems, not the guy with no college education.
Symbolism: is an object representing another to give it an entirely different meaning that is much deeper and more significant. On the Story “Battle Royal” the naked blonde symbolized the perfect American woman and the things that the black man cloud strive for their whole life but would never be able to
this is when the author directly tells the reader what the character is like. Indirect characterization- consists of the writer showing a character's personality through their speech, actions, or appearance. 2. While writers track their plots in different ways, all writers tend to follow the same plot structure and test their characters’ actions against the same framework. Briefly explain the framework that writers use for
Characterization is the way a writer makes a person in a story, book, play, movie, or television show seem like a real person. A person that is the best person to characterize is Rikki-Tikki. Rikki-tikki can be characterized as curious because everytime he wakes up he checks the house. he can also be characterized a courageous because he fought Nag and Nagaina single handedly and killed them both. Another thing he could be characterized as is strategic because he killed the babies so Nagarina could not breed them to be like
A characterization a process by which the writer reveals the personality of a character. Characterization is revealed through direct characterization and indirect characterization. A direct characterization tells the audience what the personality of the character is. An example would be, “The patient boy and quiet girl were both well-mannered and did not disobey their mother” In this quote the author is directly telling the audience the personality of the two children. That the boy is “patient” and the girl is “quiet.” Another example would be, “Karen is bright, energetic, and helpful.” This quote is directing us by telling us that Karen is both bright, energetic, and helpful. Another example is, “Joe was motivated by money.
An archetype in literature is defined as a typical example of a certain type of person. A character in a poem or play can be placed into many different archetype categories. Archetypes help a reader to gain a better understanding of who a character in the work is on the inside. This deeper insight into the character allows the reader to follow the flow of the story easier and more effectively. There are many different archetypes that can help to advance the story. One of the most useful in advancing this story is the typical powerful character. Whether it be supernatural or cunningness this character always comes out on top in the situation and holds the most control over others and their actions. “Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?”,
Archetypal Characters: Characters are presented from the start of the novel as good or evil. There are no characters that the reader see as good and turn out to be evil at the end or vica versa. Their goodness or evilness is clearly shown from the beginning.
... typical archetype. These characters are obviously supposed to mirror the archetypes that are common in fairy tales, but their flaws are contradictions to the archetypes that they are supposed to represent; through this Goldman mocks typical and standard fairy tales.
One particular criterion character effectively supports the central idea in “Rip Van Winkle” by Washington Irving. The character's type develops with the personality development throughout the story. Three types of characters: round, flat, and stock, appear in most stories. The round character displays a fully developed personality and full emotions. Flat characters, also known as supporting characters, do not develop fully or express complex emotions. A stock character, also known as a stereotype, fits an established characterization from real life or literature. With these three types of characters leading the reader through the story, the reader learns the events taking place as well as the changes in the character’s lives. The author keeps the reader informed of the changes affecting the characters throughout the narrative through style. When a character undergoes a fundamental change in nature or personality during the story, the character has dynamic style. However, a character without change defines a static character. Although all characters have a style and type sometimes understanding the differences appears complicated. A chart often helps establish a better understanding of character type and style.
A character is a person in a story that plays a particular role. Stories require characters so that it forms conflicts, tensions and resolutions. Characters also carry certain traits to make the story interesting and unique. Each character might have different attributes. Others could have similar and different qualities. Those who read many novels might notice that characters from various books are similar to each other to an extent, but are not completely the same. The old English poem, Beowulf, and Shakespeare's Macbeth contain characters with similar characteristics. Beowulf and Macbeth share similar traits, but do not have the same objective. Comparing and contrasting determine the similarities and differences of things. Comparing and contrasting is an excellent tool to determine what is right and wrong. When choosing the best car to drive, comparing and contrasting helps in the choice of the best vehicle. Macbeth and Beowulf demonstrate that a warrior's motivations matter for both soldiers and the people.
Often times great novels and plays allude to religion, to mythology, or to other literary works for dramatic purposes. Shakespearean plays are perfect examples. Allusions help the reader or spectator better understand, through visualization, a character or an event in a novel. In some cases, the characters, the events, or a series of events are structured according to the people and the action in other stories, whether the stories be religious, mythological, classical, or historical. The character or the event, therefore, becomes a prototype of the character or event alluded to. A prototypical character in a novel is usually referred to as an archetype.
Characterization is a literacy device used to help the reader decide whether or not they should like or hate a character. In the novel “Lord of the Flies” author William Golding uses this device to help support the theme people rely on civilization to maintain order and avoid savagery. Ralph was the leader of the survivors on the island; with the help of his friends he was able to create a society with rules. Jack is a reckless boy that only wants the title of chief to order others, being glad there are no adults to order him around. Roger is one of the boys one the island that never truly had a civilized side to him, making it easy to allow the savage to let loss.
Veterinarian, a round character Objective Character may be defined as the unique set of traits and features that form the nature of a fictional person. Characters that the reader will remember start with a basis of reality. The writer takes a trait, the mannerisms or perhaps the appearance of someone he has known and adds to and embellishes it, drawing from his imagination. Sometimes a character is a composite. Often a character reflects the writer's own background or fantasies. The character's motivation, the "why" of his behavior is revealed through his dialogue and actions. He is the sum of everything that has happened to him in his fictional life: a character with flesh and blood and genuine emotions who brings the validity of truth to a work of fiction. (Character, http://www.writersmarket.com/encyc/C.asp#192, Retrieved on 17/06/2003). A round character is a fictional person so specifically portrayed and described as to be recognizable and individually different from any other character in a novel, play or film. The protagonist and other main participants of a work are usually round characters: Their development is complex and tends to focus on their inner person (motivations, human traits, flaws, conflicts, distinctive qualities). Hamlet, for example, is a round character. (Round Character, http://www.writersmarket.com/encyc/r.asp, Retrieved on 17/06/2003). In pre-medical times there is reference to veterinary related topics in the 14th Century manuscript 'Sachsenspiegel' (Saxons' Mirror), and in French 12th Century epics that celebrate mounted men-at-arms; they describe horses in times of health and disease, and elsewhere in the literature horse injuries have been described. (Some examples of Veterinarians in Belletrist Lit...
When analyzing literature from an archetypal perspective, one does not simply look at the character’s behavior in that literary piece. Rather, when using the archetypal theory, one connects the traits and actions of the characters in the literary work, the settings, the surroundings, and the situations to a familiar type of literary character. In Arthur Miller’s The Crucible, the characters Abigail Williams, John Proctor, and Reverend Hale exhibit common archetypal behavior and fit into a certain archetypal figure.
Shakespeare also uses situational irony. This occurs when the results of an action or event are different than what is expected. An example of irony occurs when Macduff talks to Malcolm and discusses the tragedies that are taking place in Scotland. Without knowing that his own family has been slain, Macduff says, "Each new morn/ New widows howl, new orphans cry, new sorrows/ Strike heaven on the face" (4.3.4-6).
Characters in a story are defined by their characterization. One word that characterizes Kit is impetuous. For example, Kit pressures Prudence to visit Hannah who is disliked by the community for being Quaker. This is important because, impulsive people do not think about consequences. Another way to describe Kit is affectionate. For example, When Prudence loses her doll in the water, Kit dives in to the frigid water to reach it for her. This is important because, kind and appreciative people are willing to struggle for the good of others. Evidently characters in a story are defined by their
Character is the overall collection of morals that any given person possesses. In my opinion, this definition of character indicates that people can have exceptional character or poor character; quite often, though, character is used only in a positive connotation. The difference between exceptional character and poor character is constantly changing, depending on society's outlook
