Intellectual Humility is when the “critical thinker habitually recognizes the limits to his knowledge and experiences”, (Stanley). On a scale between intellectual humility (10) and intellectual arrogance (1), I stand halfway between the two or sometimes teeter between a four and a six. Since I am stubborn, I believe I am neither strong nor weak in the two extremes. I tend to think I know more than I do until I am proven wrong. An example of this is while in my choir class, I constantly argued with my friend about the answer to a problem: math, chemistry, English, you name it. While we both proved each other wrong countless times, I was proven wrong many more times than he was. An example of where I was strong in intellectual humility was the day I discovered the reasons behind my mother’s actions. I …show more content…
On a scale between intellectual courage and intellectual cowardice, I lean strongly towards intellectual courage (8-9). I believe one of the main reasons this is so is because I am compassionate but stubborn. I’ve always taken the opportunity to listen to other’s viewpoints so that I can understand why they think, speak or act the way they do. My stubbornness allows myself to listen but continue to think a specific way. An example of this is when my best friend moved out of her mother’s house her sophomore year of high school. I gave her support, listened to her reasons behind moving and picked her up whenever she fell down, but I never could get past her decision. She reasoned she wasn’t getting the discipline and attention she needed, while I, as a bystander, saw both sides of the situation and found that both my best friend and her mother lacked and fought for each other’s attention unknowingly. Before my best friend realized the negative impact she made with her decision, it was too
The wild is a place to push yourself to the limit and take a look at who you truly are inside. “Wilderness areas have value as symbols of unselfishness” (Nash). Roderick Nash’s philosophy states that the wilderness gives people an opportunity to learn humility but they fight this because they do not have a true desire to be humble. Human-kind wants to give out the illusion that they are nature lovers when in reality, they are far from it. “When we go to designated wilderness we are, as the 1964 act says, "visitors" in someone else's home” (Nash). People do not like what they cannot control and nature is uncontrollable. Ecocentrism, the belief that nature is the most important element of life, is not widely accepted. The novel Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer depicts a young boy who goes on an exploration to teach himself the true concept of humility. Chris McCandless, the protagonist, does not place confidence in the universal ideology that human beings are the most significant species on the planet, anthropocentrism.
Society has evolved culturally since the 6th century. The simplistic and barbaric lifestyle of the Middle Ages, as portrayed in the epic poem Beowulf (Heaney, 2000), contrasts with the complex and civilized lifestyle of a modern day society, as depicted in the movie Beowulf and Grendel (Gunnarsson, 2005). The flat characters of the epic poem exhibit little to no knowledge of the concepts of humility as well as compassion, whereas the characters of the film utilize these concepts to give each of the main characters a sense of depth as well as realistic personas that allow the audience to connect with them on a much deeper level.
Everyone is born with some form of courage. The question is, in their lifetime, will they choose to use it and grow from it? People can be courageous in many different situations and through multiple types of courage. In To Kill A Mockingbird, the author, Harper Lee, values standing up for what is right as being the most important category of courage. Harper Lee displays acts of courage through the characters when Atticus defends Tom Robinson, Scout and Jem choose not to show their anger through violence, and town’s people stand up for Tom and Atticus; thus showing that the author believes that standing up for what is right is the most valuable attribute of courage.
Indisputably, all too many families find themselves making the difficult decisions to place their loved ones in a nursing home facility. In that stressful atmosphere, family members may be tense, and conflicts may arise. Occasionally, patients and family members can be burdensome and may place their frustration toward the nursing staff. Consequently, some nurses seek to suppress such tension, only to find that it spills over into other areas of life. Others even suffer emotionally, giving way to frustration and despair. The concept of cultural humility will be discussed throughout this paper as an open and aware mentality, the quality and knowledge necessary for the nursing staff to
To me having courage makes me feel stronger than ever. Courage is one of the things that helped me join NJROTC, and it helps me get through the days. Before I learned what courage was or even used it, I was too shy to even say my name out loud. But when I joined NROTC they helped me break my shyness. And now I see clear, I know in the future courage will help me stand up and make it to my goals in life.
In “Hidden Intellectualism”, author and professor Gerald Graff describes his idea of what book smarts and streets smarts actually are. He details how new ideas can help to teach and build our educational system into something great and that perhaps street smarts students could be the factor that traditional education is missing that could make it great.
One of the best explanations of courage is the following by Maya Angelou: “One isn’t necessarily born with courage, but one is born with potential. Without courage, we cannot practice any other virtues with consistency. We can’t be kind, true, merciful, generous, or honest.” Her explanation summarizes all that courage can lead you to who you are in life. Courage is standing up for what you believe in, despite disapproval, pain, fear, uncertainty, or intimidation. Courage is challenging what is normal. Courage is giving voice to those who cannot speak for themselves. Courage is using whatever power available to educate the world about injustice. Courage is following your heart even when the path is not known. Courage is trying after failing.
But this isn’t the definition of courage. Courage is being able to act in the face of danger or in an uncomfortable state. Being stubborn and brash is the exact opposite, as someone acting as such may danger others and/or may be comfortable by standing alone. A prime example is shown in 12 Angry Men, as Juror 8 and Juror 3 represent courage and arrogance. At one time in the film, they both stand alone against a room full of people thinking against them, but how they act to it makes them who they are. Unlike how Juror 8 sways others individually, Juror 3 refused to act politely and focuses on himself, making others not appreciate him and seeing him as a barrier to
The highest level of courage is staying true to yourself. Being honest to yourself and standing up for what you believe in takes great courage. Unfortunately, being courageous comes at a high cost and you may not always be rewarded for it. In To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, many characters show courage at the topmost level. Their acts may seem foolish and immoral to others, but they do what they believe in. The book shows that true courage is fighting in what you believe no matter what the consequences. We see this type of courage in Jem, Scout, Atticus and even Boo Radley throughout the course of the book.
Q1: The argument suggests courage be defined based on, the actions of an individual and the situation they are placed in. Someone could be put into the same situation and act on the situation differently based on experience, knowledge, desperation, and the meaning of the action or situation to an individual.(192c1-3-192d7) Someone with more knowledge will act more accordingly to a difficult situation if they know what their chances are in succeeding in that action or the consequences attempting it. Courage is a representation of bravery. If someone stands up for something not only to benefit them but to
They demonstrate the humility in various ways. Humility is significant in business fields because it involves the capability to acknowledge mistakes, shortcomings, knowledge gaps and restrictions; they are the keys to getting ahead of the games in business careers. Being humble also intimates their willingness to gather new ideas or receive contradictory information from their staffs. Cain declares that the personalities of the introvert leaders are described with the following personalities: "quiet, humble, modest, reserved, shy, gracious, mild-mannered, self-effacing, understated" (Cain 55). These personalities give introverts advantages to solve many problems at work which extroverts might not able to achieve. The reason is that these qualities make introverts become good thinkers, as a result, they could sometimes come up with the better solutions. These features from introverts would be in favor of making them become great leaders in their
By being stubborn, I allow myself to know what I want and do not want without having to be very indecisive. Obdurate people allow themselves to pursue what they want to do because they already have their mind set. Being very trusting is also considered to be one of my strengths because it allows me to be open minded to new ideas and opportunities. This fortitude also allows me to easily bond and socialize with other people who naturally trust others as well. I can effortlessly influence people to consider my opinions since there is a certain amount of trust between one another.
Interpersonal intelligences are nearly the complete opposite because it is said that “Interpersonal intelligences reflects an ability to recognize and understand other people’s moods, desires, motivations, and intentions” (www.edutopia.org). The third intelligence that I correspond with is logical-mathematical intelligence and Gardner says that “Logical-mathematical intelligences describes the ability to develop equations and proofs, make calculations, and solve abstract problems” (www.edutopia.org). My self-reflection will use the multiple intelligences paradigm to analyze my strengths and weaknesses within my top multiple intelligences which are intrapersonal, interpersonal, and logical-mathematical. I will also examine what careers are congruent with my top multiple intelligences.
The real intelligent people are people who confess with their own mistakes and comply with others’ advice. Moreover, they will accept to improve themselves. For example, when you make some mistakes, you cannot only say sorry. However, you have to sincerely show that you try to solve the problem, so it makes others to feel that you are really confessing with your mistakes. Some proud people cannot admit their mistakes, and do not listen to others’ reprimand. It means that they obstruct themselves from the others’ good will, so it leads them to repeat the same mistakes because they do not want to solve the problem. Moreover, for instance, if some well-wishers try to caution a guy that he does something wrong, but the guy does not listen to their warning. Hence, they do not try for the second time to tell this guy about his mistakes. It means that the guy does not admit his fault, and no one else wants to warn him
Humility is also a virtue, and it is also found in maturity. Justice, selflessness, prudence, wisdom, intelligence, and fortitude are all virtues, and they are all found in maturity. All of these virtues are just good character traits and show poise, and when they are combined together they produce a mindset of maturity in one’s character. Patience is shown in maturity through being able to assess the situation and think through all feasible solutions, coming to the best conclusion on how to proceed. The humility in maturity is gracefully being able to acknowledge that one is not as important as he or she would like to place themselves to be. In maturity, one must be intelligent know what is just and unjust, and in order to act with wisdom, they must have maturity. To be mature, one must have the confidence and fortitude to be able to carry out a truly prudent decision. In coordination with all of these virtues, a person can achieve a mindset of mental
