In the short story, The Masque of Red Death by Edgar Allen Poe, Prince Prospero, the main character, seems to be a flat character. Prince prospero is a flat character because the story doesn't give a lot of background information about him, besides the fact that he is indeed a Prince with no worries. Prince Prospero can also be characterized as a dynamic character and a static character. He is a dynamic character because in the beginning of the story, the Prince is happy and doesn't have any worries but he changed when the red death comes to his party. The Prince’s mood changes to anger because the red death is scaring everyone at his party and disturbing the peace. Edgar Allen Poe uses both direct characterization and indirect characterization.

Hawthorne’s “Young Goodman Brown” and Poe’s “The Masque of the Red Death” both deal with the main character’s belief in being able to conquer a situation. Hawthorne’s story centers on Brown’s journey into the forest to have a meeting with an older man, which tests Brown’s faith. Poe’s story focuses on Prince Prospero’s attempt to escape the Red Death by locking himself in his castellated abbey together with friends, and hosting a masquerade ball. Essentially, both stories deal with different scenarios by Brown believing he can overcome evil, and Prince Prospero believing he can overcome death. The Masque of the Red Death was very serious from the beginning to end. The story never pulled away from the sense of a looming threat. Poe did not waste anytime, he cut straight to the point and set the tone right away. The tone relates to people language and the specific words that he uses to create illusion and imagery. Poe uses different times of words to define his language which is called Old English today. Poe sentences are also short and they are practically identical in the simple structure. Poe is a very different writer than most writers today, he has a unique way about his language.
The characters in “The Mask of the Red Death” include Prince Prospero (who is the only person that speaks in the story), a multitude (a thousand) of the Prince’s wealthy friends, and the masked figure, which doesn’t appear until the end of the story. Prince Prospero’s name signifies happiness and good-fortune. Ironically, this is not the tone of the story. If you did not have personification in the story then the entire story would not work. Edgar Allen Poe has based this entire story just on personification. It is crazy to me on how it works though. If i had to write something I could not do it. A good example of personification in the story is when Prince Prospero figured out who the masked figure who had never been seen before was. When he said “Then summoning the wild courage and despair, a throng of the revellers at once threw themselves into the black apartment, and, seizing the mummer, whose tall figure stood erect and motionless within the shadow of the ebony clock, gasped in unutterable horror at finding the grave cerements, and corpse like mask, which they handled with so violent a rudeness, untenanted by any tangible form.” This part of the story is describing the Red death in a person looking form even though it is a disease, which is a big part of personification in this story. Now if that wasn't apart of the story then the entire story would be as interesting as it is now. That is why I love this
Poe uses major themes that are shown throughout the whole story in multiple different stories. In The Tell-Tale Heart and The Masque Of the Red Death we see themes that appear largely in both stories such as time and versions of reality. In The Tell-Tale Heart we see three different perspectives of reality that basically can be three different stories that are told depending on the person who’s story you view from. In The Masque of the Red Death there are several different types of reality that range from the poor sick and dying of the kingdom that are locked out of the castle to the rich members of the kingdom who are in a dream like atmosphere and which even includes the prince 's version of reality as well where he believes he can simply just close the door on the disease. The realities in the story even range all the way to the reality of the the Red Death itself who does not see social classes or status but just goes after anyone for no reasons, but just cause chaos and suffering. The other theme also includes how time ties both of the stories together. In The Tell-Tale Heart the unnamed main character and narrator is completely obsessed with time. For several nights in a row he goes into the old man 's room precisely at the same time and and he does the same exact procedure every single night. He then after the murder he commits hears the heart of the dead man that resembles a ticking clock. Next, in The Masque of the Red Death we see time being represented in the orientation of the rooms from east to east, the colors of the rooms and what they represent of stages of life, and finally the clock in the black room that is counting down the time until the death of everyone at the party.
