Most people tend to let ones anxiety control him or her, their fears scare them and their obstacles get in their way. If one lets this get in his way, then there is no possible way that he will be able to overcome their obstacles. For example, a great artist named Phil Hansen was diagnosed with nerve damage and he let his obstacles get in his way of creating art. In addition to this, a journalist named James Collier suffered of anxiety and he let his anxiety control him. Hansen had to embrace his shake, Collier overcame his anxiety and I had to overcome anxiety at a certain point in my life as well. Overcoming obstacles will allow one to surpass his or her fear.

I had applied at an office job where I knew I was going to be interviewed. I had to sleepless nights for two weeks straight. I was always worried and unsure about what might happen. I was a bit isolated from my family and friends and I had problems breathing when I would overthink the outcomes of my interview. I even postponed my interview because I wasn’t feeling well and prepared. I was then called in a couple days later to be interviewed. I didn’t want to go alone, so I had my mom come with me. In addition to this, the whole ride there, my hands were shaking and didn’t allow me to drive straight. As soon as I got there I started panicking and felt butterflies in my stomach as I was being interviewed. Arthur, the CEO son, seemed to be as nervous as I. I thought to myself, “Arthur, who has interviewed many is still anxious than why I should be nervous if I’m just being asked a couple of questions that I should already know the answers too?” As a result of this, I took a deep breath and started feeling much better. This affects me as a person because facing my fear and overcoming it is really hard to me because I usually don’t face my fear in person because I usually face my fear in dreams and I don’t like seeing it. I remember in the past when I got so mad and almost got into a rage mode which made me feel really bad in the inside. My sister got me really mad by doing something I told her not to do, but instead of myself getting really mad, I was able to handle my anger and not get really mad. I got really happy because I was able to overcome my fear of not getting really mad and not feeling really bad in the inside. A future fear is me not doing good in school or other sport activities. Anxiety is a monster that most people have to deal with on a daily basis. Even though anxiety is not actually a monster it still torments thousands of people every day, leaving them weak and scared. Anxiety is overcoming obstacles, it does go away if one is repetitively doing it. Anxiety can lead to depression, but they are not the same thing. James Collier once said, “I developed a ruled for myself : Do what makes you happy, don’t do what makes you depressed.” Collier got an invite to go to Argentina, he really wanted to go but his anxiety got the best of him. His ideas for the future were very myopic. Collier turned down the trip and wasn’t happy about it. Collier was nervous because he had never been that far from New England. Not to mention, Collier also got homesick the first week he was away for college so being homesick also set him back. Don’t go into depression because anxiety isn’t letting you do the things you want to do, just push through it. Later on in life Collier got another offer to go on a trip for work, he took the offer because he was going to do what made him happy, not depressed. I also get anxiety when I have job interviews. Talking to a manager, trying to say all of the right things makes me nervous and loquacious. Anxiety is a normal reaction to a threatening situation and results from an increase in the amount of adrenaline from the sympathetic nervous system. This increased adrenaline speeds the heart and respiration rate, raises blood pressure, and diverts blood flow to the muscles. These physical reactions are appropriate for escaping from danger but when they cause anxiety in many situations throughout the day, they may be detrimental to a normal lifestyle. An anxiety disorder is a disorder where feelings of fear, apprehension, or anxiety are disruptive or cause distortions in behavior, (Coon, 526); they are psychiatric illnesses that are not useful for normal functioning. At times, an underlying illness or disease can cause persistent anxiety. Treatment of the illness or disease will stop the anxiety. Anxiety illnesses affect more than 23 million Americans with about 10 million Americans suffering from the most common, general anxiety disorder . (Harvard, 1). Common anxiety disorders are panic attacks (panic disorder), phobias, and general anxiety disorder (GAD). Panic attacks Panic attacks can begin with a feeling of intense terror followed by physical symptoms of anxiety. A panic attack is characterized by unpredictable attacks of severe anxiety with symptoms not related to any particular situation. (Hale, 1886). The person experiencing the attack may not be aware of the cause. Symptoms include four or more of the following: pounding heart, difficulty breathing, dizziness, chest pain, shaking, sweating, choking, nausea, depersonalization, numbness, fear of dying, flushes, fear of going crazy. Heredity, metabolic factors, hyperventilation, and psychological factors may contribute to anxiety causing panic attacks.
There are several types of anxiety disorders. Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) involves excessive worrying, nervousness and tension. With this disorder, there is a constant feeling of dread that shapes your entire life. This type of anxiety doesn’t have the intensity of a panic attack, however lasts longer and makes daily life and relaxing impossible. People with GAD worry that a friendship is in jeopardy if a missed phone call to a friend isn’t returned to them. The thought of getting through the day can cause anxiety. GAD makes people worry excessively and the worrying is constant. These people feel as though their mind is on a nonstop running marathon and there is nothing they can do about it. To help treat GAD there are several self-help tips to follow. One can look at their worries in a new way and understand that worries are triggered and the blame cannot be put on anyone else. I used to have a lot of trouble with Anxiety and Depression, these troubles caused me to feel handicapped through life and felt like many things I did were just too hard to deal with, even the most simple of things. In the past year I learned that you cannot let Anxiety and Depression control your life. These things can only control your life, if you allow them to control your life; and after being on anxiety and depression medication for years, I am finally coming off of the anxiety medication.

Fear can have such a powerful grasp on my mind that it will cause me to be consumed with it. Understand that I have the power to control my thoughts. Memorize encouraging quote and when the feelings of fear creep into my mind, I repeat this over and over until it becomes the guiding thought. When I leverage the power of shutting down undesirable thoughts with optimistic statement, I create a gate of opportunity to my self to break out of that dreaded Series of Fear.
