had made the decision that they would leave Curacao and go back to Norfolk. Phillip did not want to leave and argued with his parents about leaving. He called his mom a coward and said he hated her (Taylor 24). This shows that Phillip was not independent and could not make his own decisions. In the middle of the novel, Phillip starts to develop maturity after adapting to being lost on the island in the middle of somewhere. He begins to be able to do stuff own his own with a little bit of help from timothy. Phillip is learning how to navigate the island and tell what time it is based on the heat he felt from the sun (Taylor 79 ). In this, Phillip is starting to be able to do task on his own. At the end of the novel, Phillip has developed independence. Phillip has learned how to fish and provide food for Stew Cat and himself after Timothy’s death (Taylor 98 ). Phillip can now do everyday task on his own without the help from anyone else. So as you can see, Phillip developed independence throughout the novel. Phillip demonstrates bravery after experiencing frightness as evidenced in the novel when he learns how to like and understand the noises he hears and the things he feels after becoming blind. At the beginning of the novel, Phillip is frightened by all the sounds he hears. “It was, of course, being unable to see that made all the sounds so frightening (Taylor 65).” It then says how Phillip then began to cry (Taylor 65). This shows that Phillip was not so brave to start with. During the novel, Phillip starts to become fearless. Phillip had been asked by Timothy before to climb the palm tree but he had been to afraid to do it before. “I think it was the fifth afternoon of this week that I blurted out to Timothy, ‘I’ll climb the palm now’ (Taylor 98.)” Phillip had built up the courage to climb the tall palm tree and was overcoming his fears. At the end of the novel Phillip had gained bravery. He was now doing many things he was afraid of at first. Phillip went to the hole where Timothy had told him not to go and hunted for langosta. This was a very dangerous thing for Phillip to do since he would be diving into the hole not knowing what all was down there since he was unable to see (Taylor 121). Phillip, even though he had been warned by Timothy, forgot about all the scary things and focused on the good. He had became a changed, brave boy. Phillip demonstrates hard work after experiencing laziness as evidenced in the novel when he was able to do the work necessary after Timothy had passed. At first, Phillip did not want to help Timothy do any of the work. Timothy had told Phillip how to weave the mat so they could get their camp set up faster but Phillip used the excuse of being blind to not do any work. After Timothy had stood up and walked over the Phillip and told him again how to do it, Phillip got very angry cause he did not want to work and stood up and threw the palm fibers at Timothy and screamed at Timothy that he was just a ugly black man! He also said how he would not do the work and how Timothy was stupid cause he did not even know how to spell (Taylor 70-71). Phillip was not hardworking at this moment in the novel and was just lazy. In the middle of the novel, Phillip started to become more helpful. One day, Timothy came down with Malaria and Phillip helped Timothy out. Phillip had ripped a piece of cloth of his shirt and dampened it with water to place on Timothy’s forehead because he had remembered that helps with fevers (Taylor 89). He also got water from the hut and brought it down the Timothy and made him drink it so he would not be dehydrated (Taylor 91). This shows how Phillip was starting to do a little more work. Towards the end of the novel, Phillip had become full out hardworking. Phillip was now doing all the work on the island that had to be done since Timothy had passed. Phillip had rebuilt the camp after the hurricane and was now catching all the food for him and Stew Cat. Also, Phillip had realized that the smoke the fire was making was probably white so therefore the airplanes would not be able to see it. Phillip then had made a plan to use sea grape to make the smoke black so it would be noticeable. “ By the time I had carried ten or fifteen bundles of sea grape to the fire, tumbling them in, I was sure that a column of black smoke was rising into the sky over the cay (Taylor 130). “ Phillip had become cable of doing the hard work. He had carried all the sea grape by himself to the shore where the fire was. So therefore, throughout the book Phillip’s character changes majorly. The traits that Phillip developed helped him turn into a more mature young boy. A boy that could do stuff on his own. Before going to Alaska, Chris McCandless had failed to communicate with his family while on his journey; I believe this was Chris’s biggest mistake. Chris spent time with people in different parts of the nation while hitchhiking, most of them whom figured out that McCandless kept a part of him “hidden”. In chapter three, it was stated that Chris stayed with a man named Wayne Westerberg in South Dakota. Although Westerberg was not seen too often throughout the story, nevertheless he was an important character. Introducing himself as Alex, McCandless was in Westerberg’s company for quite some time: sometimes for a few days, other times for several weeks. Westerberg first realized the truth about Chris when he discovered his tax papers, which stated that “McCandless’s real name was Chris, not Alex.” Wayne further on claims that it was obvious that “something wasn’t right between him and his family” (Krakauer 18). Further in the book, Westerberg concluded with the fact that Chris had not spoken to his family “for all that time, treating them like dirt” (Krakauer 64). Westerberg concluded with the fact that during the time he spent with Chris, McCandless neither mentioned his
In the Lilies of the Field by William E. Barrett, Homer and Mother Maria both display straightforward, hardworking, and stubborn character traits. Firstly, Homer and Mother Maria both display a straightforward personality by being brutally honest about their opinions. For example, when Mother Maria asks Homer to build a chapel, Homer speaks his mind by telling her he does not want to build it. Mother Maria shows her straightforward behavior during Homer’s stay at the convent. One morning, when Homer sleeps in late, Mother to becomes extremely upset and is not afraid to show how she feels about him. Secondly, both Homer and Mother Maria display a hardworking spirit. Homer is a hardworking man because after finally agreeing to build the chapel,
Just like Jesus, Phillip came to aid people but instead just got tossed aside and sent back to where he came from. Tom brought Phillip to aid the people of the farm, and he did, but to Tom's parents, his help was not sufficient, so Phillip was tossed aside and sent back to where he came from, just like Jesus had been. Tom's father can illustrate this for us when he says, "I'm taking him back to town…He tried hard enough…" (Ross 234). According to Tom's father he tried relativly hard enough, but it was just inadequate so we are taking him back. This is also not fair when it comes to Phillip. Phillip tried hard, but that was still not good enough. Just like Jesus who tries hard to get the people to be enlightened and to embrace God, but was instead punished for it. Thus showing how Phillip and Jesus Christ can, in a way be the same
When they first come to the Island Philip is dependent of timothy and doesn’t want to work because he is blind stated by him in the novel. ”I just wanted to sit and think. I didn’t want to work. I said timothy I can’t work I’m blind”. Page 70 in the novel. Then when Timothy almost died of malaria so Timothy trained him to to rely on himself. Phillip starts being independent of Timothy when he carves a crane for philip so he can move around the island and also attaches vines to each side of the island so philip can walk back and forth from the hut.In chapter eleven is when philip says ” Timothy fashioned a cane for me and I was now using it to feel my way around the island ”.” I was starting to be less dependent on the vine ”. While still dependent on timothy he started to be less being able to walk without him and the vines. To test if Philip was now independent of Timothy he had to climb a tree blind. When he first went up to it he had stop and
This is an instance of diffusion of responsibility among the boys. In order for them to all survive everyone needs to pull their own weight and work to provide food and shelter. However the boys get lazy and start getting distracted by other things on the island. Golding states, “I mean who built all three? We all built the first one, four of us the second one, and me’n Simon built the last one over there.” (Golding.107). There are so many boys on the island that each one thinks it’s alright for them to slack a little. One by one they all start slacking and there is not enough people actually working in order to make up for all the boys who have stopped. All of the boys fell into witness behavior and watched as people worked rather than helping them. Similar to another part of Darley and Latane’s experiment with fake seizures. A group of students were all in a chat room where they had an allotted time to speak, one actor faked a seizure for the students to hear; yet, only a third of students reacted. They expected the others would help him, so they wouldn 't have to. The same with the boys, they expected the others to do the work for
One way that Phillip changed was when he demonstrated gratefulness after experiencing being stranded on an island as evidenced in the novel when he was rescued in the end. In the beginning of the story, he was ungrateful to his mother, blaming her for being stuck with Timothy on the boat. The novel states that Phillip blurted out that he wouldn’t be stuck with Timothy if it weren’t for his mother (Taylor 38). He did not understand that his mother was simply trying to protect him from the war. In the middle of the story, Phillip is starting to become grateful when Timothy
People’s character changes over time from certain events in their life.In The Cay, by Theodore Taylor, Phillip is the main character, and faces many challenges throughout the novel. Phillip’s character reveals that through trial and tribulation, a once childish person can become caring, brave and independent.
“I accomplished a lot in three days, even putting a new edge on Timothy’s knife by honing in on coral (Taylor 119).” Philip started out as a helpless and dependent boy, but by surviving alone on the little cay, Phillip becomes independent. Phillip shows maturity after experiencing the survival on the cay, demonstrating it when he is rescued and is back at home, looking at things from a different perspective. At the beginning of the novel, he is playful and doesn’t know about the serious dangers of war. Even though his mother tells him not to, because he could be attacked, Phillip goes outside to play around the boats with his friend Henrik.
What makes Jim Casy interesting is the contradiction. Sprituality (affecting the human spirit or soul as opposed to material or physical thing)
...nd, when he listened to people and helped everyone he finally got what he wanted. He got Rita and he also was able to go the next day after Groundhog Day and he was even with Rita. This is actually how he found out that it was a new day with a new beginning to his life. He told Rita the night before that no matter what happens in the future, that he was happy in that one moment when they were lying next to each other in the bed. At the beginning of the movie, Phil absolutely hated the town that they had just gone into, to report in for Groundhog Day. But in the end, when he changed, after he helped everyone and the got the girl that he had wanted the whole time he decided that he actually liked the place. Once he found out that Groundhog Day was officially over for him, he wanted to stay there, and he wanted Rita to stay with him, and that is exactly what they did.
Phillip is one of the few remaining characters on the island towards the end of the novel. While Phillip

When Louie was stranded on the raft, he never let circumstance get the better of him. The three survivors, Louie, Phil, and Mac, all had completely differing perspectives of their trouble. Louie and Phil stayed optimistic, while Maxc slowly deteriorated along with his hope. Hillenbrand wrote that "It remains a mystery why these three young men, veterans of the same training and same crash, differed so radically in their perceptions of their plight. Maybe the difference was biological; some men may be wired for optimism, others for doubt... Perhaps the men's histories had given them opposing convictions about their capacity to overcome adversity... Though all three men faced the same hardship, their differing perceptions of it appeared to be shaping their fates. Louie and Phil's ...
A major, vital element in any adventure novel is the inclusion of a hero or heroine. In The Cay, Phillip is the hero. This twelve-year-old boy is the main character in the story, and his struggle for survival is portrayed as the main problem in the book. Phillip is “made” by the author, Taylor, into a character a Deer Creek seventh-grader, or any other American middle-schooler, can relate to. The aspect of Phillip that is the easiest to relate to ...
I believe that Phil has finally lived up to his potential. Basically, if you look at how Phil transitions throughout the movie and his time a Punxsutawney. In the beginning, through the middle of the movie, Phil thinks he’s more important than everybody else, also while, believing the idea of celebrating a groundhog is stupid. But, as the movie gradually moved on, you could see the transitioning in how Phil felt about the unusual town. He was this cocky, arrogant, news weatherman, that believed he was the best. Then, he started to become more humble, in how he acted towards the town. It was Rida, who ultimately allowed, to me, Phil to really step back and begin to accept the repeating day as it was. Which now, leads into the Belongingness and
