Cause and Effect Essay-The Causes of Divorce
Relationships are all about give and take, and to maintain that balance people must be willing to do the work. Today dissolution of marriage is being used as the easy way out when couples no longer agree. When couples are incapable of maintaining a happy marriage, a divorce can be agreed upon. Divorce is more common nowadays, making the divorce rate a continual increase. About 40 to 50 percent of married couples in the United States divorce (Kazdin). In America, there is one divorce every 13 seconds. That’s 6,646 divorces per day, and 46,523 divorce per week (Irvin). The three main causes of divorce is the lack of communication, financial difficulties, and infidelity.
To begin with, lack of communication is a significant cause of the recent rise in the rates of divorce. A marriage is on the rocks when the lines of communication fail. People will tend to stay quiet about money management and job issues, because they don’t want to burden their partner. Most of the time they think it’s easier to deal with it by one’s self, but in reality, it’s pushing their partner out of the room and shutting the door. When this starts to happen, it’s harder to push back. In marriage, one person’s problems is supposed to be handled by both. One will feel neglected if they don’t have a say in a particular situation. Thus, resentment and distance starts growing between the two. Those small problems now become big problems, which result in separation. In order to have a good solid foundation, each couple needs to be heard and voice his or her own feelings. This includes conflict of opinion with concerns to small or big disputes such as religion, children, job opportunities and money management.
Another cause of divorce is due to financial difficulties. Budget handling and debt arising out of low or reduced income is an example of a financial cause of divorce. Fighting over how to budget becomes a major problem in the marriage. In most cases, one of the partners is not content with the overspending habits of the other individual. This will cause a stressful situation which leads to an unwholesome relationship and result in a divorce. A couple struggling to make ends meet has the potential to cause conflict within the marriage. How the economy is today, it seems we are fighting more and more to keep our jobs.
