magine spending the upcoming Christmas holiday without friends and family gathered around the decorated tree and dinner table. No cheerful Christmas songs, or any busy holiday shopping, and no awaiting Christmas morning. Imagine, laying down on a thin piece of cardboard in the cold, snow covered sidewalk while watching the cars rush by on their way to spend time with their families for the holidays. Imagine, being left alone with nothing but a thin jacket, a small blanket, an empty stomach, and no family or home to go to. It is estimated that there are 30,000 Canadians left homeless on a given night. 2,880 unsheltered, 14,400 staying in emergency shelters, 7,350 staying in violence against women shelters, and 4,464 living in temporary institutional …show more content…

Structural factors are the economic and societal problems that take away opportunities and affect social environments for individuals. It can include, low income to pay for basic living necessities, little access to affordable healthcare or housing, or racism/discrimination. A recession, or economic shift can affect someones chance of getting a job, discrimination can interfere with access to employment, housing, and aid services. Individual and relational factors are the personal experiences of a homeless person. This can include lay-offs, physical/mental health problems, disabilities, or a personal problem like a break-up. Violence can also be an experience that has caused someone to leave home. System failures happen when other systems that are created to help, support and care fail. This can happen to immigrants, or a rough transition off child welfare These can cause barriers between a person and their right to living a dignified life. Preventive measures can be taken to end homelessness rather than trying to manage it, it may seem like an overwhelming task but working towards this one step at a time will bring us one step closer. First of all, the government needs to start supporting homeless shelters. With money from the government more shelters, aid, and food can be distributed among homeless people. Affordable housing needs to increase to reduce homelessness in all provinces. The Government of Canada should work throughout the provinces and develop a strategy to implement affordable housing. Finally, eradicating all chronic homelessness can help lower the amount of homeless people in shelters. Chronic homelessness is longterm homelessness, it is when a homeless person uses more than half of the emergency aid and shelter provided for long continuous periods.
