The Thirty Years’ War The Thirty Years’ War is a war waged in the early seventeenth century that involved France, Spain, Sweden, Denmark, Austria, and numerous states of Germany. The causes of the war were fixed in national rivalries and in conflict between Roman Catholics and Protestants. The war or series of connected wars began in 1618, when the Austrian Hapsburgs tried to impose Roman Catholicism on their Protestant subjects in Bohemia. It created resentment between the Protestants and the Catholics, the Holy Roman Empire against France, and France against the Hapsburgs of Spain. The Swedes, the Danes, the Poles, the Russians, the Dutch and the Swiss were all brought into or joined in because they wanted to. Profitable interests and competitions played a part, so
They took a toll on more than just their “armies,” They lost precious farmland and countless people died. Learning about the countries involved, how the war ended, and the effects really showed me how much the Thirty Years’ War changed the Europe area and changed the lives of the people that lived there. Everyone is going to have their own opinion on the war and how it turned out, but personally I find that the war actually created a positive outcome for the European region. Just look at some positives such as the Holy Roman Empire and the Hapsburgs losing power, also changing the way of their religion, boundaries, and reign of power within the states. Protestants and Catholics both took a large toll with this war, but both are still here today and aren’t going anywhere. After discussing many aspects of the Thirty Years’ War, I hope you can see how it changed Europe itself, both religions, and the division of power within Nation States and how this all plays into how we see Europe
details the causes of the first World war and describes the first month of the war. The book clearly illustrates how a local war became an entire European struggle by a call to war against Russia. Soon after the war became a world issue.
The Seven Years War was best known to those in American history as the French and Indian war. In reality, the war was much larger in scope and devastation in relation to the simple name given to it. Lasting from 1756-1763, the Seven Years War involved much of the imperial powers of that time: Prussia, England, and Portugal on one side with France, Spain, and Austria on the other. Spurred by competition for land and territory, the war implicated the two world powers, Britain and France, in a fateful battle for dominance. The period also saw the rise of important figures such as George Washington and Benedict Arnold that would later be instrumental in the American Revolution. Yet the significance of this war was that it set up the stage for events like the French and American Revolutions, and rearranged a new world order of imperialism.
The word "privateer" conjures a romantic image in the minds of most Americans. Tales of battle and bounty pervade the folklore of privateering, which has become a cherished, if often overlooked part of our shared heritage. Legends were forged during the battle for American independence, and these men were understandably glorified as part of the formation of our national identity. The fact of the matter is that the vast majority of these men were common opportunists, if noteworthy naval warriors. The profit motive was the driving force behind almost all of their expeditions, and a successful privateer could easily become quite wealthy. In times of peace, these men would be common pirates, pariahs of the maritime community. Commissioned in times of war, they were respected entrepreneurs, serving their purses and their country, if only incidentally the latter. However vulgar their motivation, the system of privateering arose because it provided a valuable service to thecountry, and indeed the American Revolution might not have been won without their involvement. Many scholars agree that all war begins for economic reasons, and the privateers of the war for independence contributed by attacking the commercial livelihood of Great Britain's merchants.
The war would originally begin in 1914 in Europe and the United States wasn’t involved until three years after the war began. The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand on June 28th was one of the aspects that kick started the war. After the assassination on July 28th, Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia. Just days after war was declared between Serbia and Austria-Hungary, Germany would declare war on Russia and France. Germany and Russia were brought into the war due to Germany’s alliance with Austria-Hungary and Russia’s alliance with Serbia. Germany’s invasion of Belgium would draw Britain into the war.
The causes of World War II can be attributed to the following ideas or events: the mentality of power is strength by Heinrich von Treitschke, the Treaty of Versailles, the global depression following the end of World War I, and Nazi Imperialism.
The Hundred Years War took place between France and England between the years 1337 and 1453, which is ironically one hundred and sixteen years. The war was fought over a couple issues, which include, an English King wanting to claim the French throne and also because the French king Phillip VI wanted to own territories
World War II began in 1939 when the German armies decided to invade parts of Europe, therefore causing Europeans to retaliate against the Germans (World War 1). World War II began because those countries which were defeated in World War I (Germany, Italy, and Japan) were greatly devastated by the loss. Their countries were suffering from economical problems and were also left in bad conditions after World War I. They had lost much territory and now were practically in debt for the damages which they had done during the war (1). These countries figured that the only way for them to get out of economic depression and revive their country was to take land from other countries, which was one of the reasons why the war began.
In August of 1914, a war today known as World War I began. The World War 1 began as a war locally between Austria-Hungary and Serbia. It eventually grew into a war involving thirty-two different countries. The allies involved in World War 1 included Britain, France, Russia, Italy and the United States. These countries fought against Germany, Ottoman Empire, Austria-Hungary, and Bulgaria. A question frequently asked by many people is, what really caused World War 1 to happen. There are several different causes people believe that started World War I. Three causes mostly believed to be what started World War I are imperialism, nationalism, and militarism.
War, war never changes. All parties involved in war do it for one reason and one reason alone, power. This struggle for power is no different in the case of The Thirty Years’ War. Starting in Bohemia in 1618 as a regional conflict with the Hapsburg Empire, many parties were involved in the conflict. The Catholic Church was one such party struggling with the religious conflict of the Reformation. Other Nations such as France, England, Sweden, and Spain were involved as well and played a major role in obtaining greater power through the use of political actions under the guise of religion.
The society could not support a long war. The First World War left no aspect of European civilization untouched as pre-war governments were transformed to fight total war. The war metamorphed Europe socially, politically, economically, and intellectually. European countries channeled all of their resources into total war, which resulted in enormous social change. The result of working together for a common goal seemed to be unifying European societies.
During the sixteenth and seventeenth the two dominant faiths in Europe was Protestant and the Catholic. Both considered each other's faith as heresy against the true form of practicing Christianity. Therefore both wanted the cease of existence of each other. War would have been inevitable if both sides were able to accept each other and live in a compromised state. However, I don’t believe this would have been possible especially not back then. Since people tend to categorize each other based on different characteristics, in this case its faith. Neither sides would be able to consider each other as equals. The winning of the battles was not based on whose practice of religion is the right way, it was based on who had more weapons or people to fight on their side. In a personal perspective I don’t understand the purpose of the war. The Protestant and the Catholic both come from Christianity. They do have some differences in their rituals and practices however, they are still the same faith. I thought the war was originally because of the Pope or the vatican because the existence of the protestant is a threat to the Papal. Since they don't hold allegion to the Pope. Would it be possible that the Papal is what caused Catholic to be against the Protestant faith so much. I believe the protestant also had people on their side to enforce the hatred such as Calvin toward the
The world was plunged into World War II in 1939 for many reasons. The reasons were Japan invading Manchuria, Mussolini's attack on Ethiopia, and when Hitler defies The Treaty of Versailles. Appeasement was one of the biggest things that lead to World War II.Appeasement was giving in to an aggressor to keep peace. It basically postponed the War from happening but did not stop the war from happening . The Most effective response to aggression at this time was collective security because it was using the appeasement to got the countries together and didn't benefit them.
The war started in September 1, 1939 when Germany invaded the territory of Poland, which was allied with Great Britain and France. German officials signed a peace treaty in August 24-25 with the Soviet Union to prevent them from acting in the invasion and to stay in peace between both countries. So Great Britain, France, Australia and New Zealand declared war on Germany the day of September 3, 1939. After this event, Canada also declared war on Germany at September 10, 1939. Germany rapidly crushed Poland, since it had an incredible army with 100 infantry divisions and six armored divisions. Due to the peace treaty between Germans and Soviets, in September 17th the Soviet also invaded and took eastern Poland. Later in the year, on November 30th, the USSR invaded Finland while Great Britain and France where occupied with Germany. At this time, Japan was in the Far East, and had Asia in turmoil. Imperial Japan invaded china and various other territories ...
... to Kings, to Queens, to their kids, and to the subjects of both the ruler and the church, incredibly helped the reason for the Thirty Years War.
The Thirty Years War was a series of conflicts, not-knowingly involving most European countries from 1618 to 1648. The war, which was fought mainly in Germany, was started when Bohemian Protestants furiously attacked the Holy Roman Emperor in terms to impose a restriction on their religious and civil liberties. By understanding the Thirty Years War, you will notice the notable religious, political and social changes. The changes paved the religious and political maps of Europe. Not only did this war affect the religious and political demographic, it caused populations to perish and lose large amounts of their goods. What was known as a religious battle, turned out to be a political feud in competition of which state has the greater power affecting men, women, soldiers and civilians. “[The bohemians] had no idea that their violent deed would set off a chain reaction of armed conflict that would last thirty years and later be called Europe’s “first world war” of the modern era.” When the war ended, the lands were defiled and over 5 million people were killed.
