Have you ever wondered why someone may be nervous around new social events or people? There a struggle that some of us go thought every day it’s called social anxiety and it affects many people. It can make life hard large number of people in one place, unfamiliar surroundings, interacting with new people are the cause of my social anxiety.
There are many triggers for social anxiety, but one of the main ones can be large crowds or large volume of people in one place. When dealing with social anxiety, I know from experience that this is one of the harder triggers to deal with. This is because it makes it harder to get out and do events or going out into busy public place. People with social anxiety always feel like they have to watch their backs as they feel small and valuable in large crowds. I know personally that it really sucks because it makes going out and enjoying time with friends or even family because of the feeling like you always need to keep watch. Living with social anxiety is tough to live with and this is one of the many different triggers that can cause social anxiety.

Having to deal with new place can be hard for anyone but new places can be petrifying for someone with social anxiety because it’s the fear of the unknown. When going to a new place there are many things going through their heads like what if there are a lot of people, what if I mess up and people start talking about me. When in the new place they lose that sense of security and I know from what I deal with their minds start to race, then start to jump to the worst possible outcome that could happen but most likely won’t. This is hard because it can make it really hard to enjoy a good time outside your security level. One of the most common anxiety disorder is social phobia, which can sometimes be interchangeable with Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD). Marc de Rosnay, and others, states that Social Anxiety Disorder is characterized by a clearly noticeable fear and avoidance of most social situations where the individual may be put under scrutiny by others, and by fear in such situations, the individual will behave in an embarrassing manner (de Rosnay). One of the most notable feature of social phobia is that it has an early onset, as early as 7-9 months in most cases. The characteristics of having social phobia, or social anxiety disorder, is that the individuals are shy when meeting new people, quiet in a large group, blush easily, and often avoids making eye contact. There are a lot of concerns/problems with having social anxiety disorder. As a group, individuals with anxiety disorders had the largest burden of role disability compared to other common mental health conditions, exceeding the burden for mood disorders and in some cases, substance abuse (Grigorenko).
In general, Social Anxiety Disorder, or Social Phobia, is defined as an anxiety disorder characterized by an overwhelming amount of anxiety and excessive self-consciousness in everyday social situations (“Social Phobia,” 2014). These individuals have trouble with basic communication and interaction, often to the point where they can physically feel the effects of their anxiety. Social phobias easily lead individuals to shunning situations where they feel they might be the focus of other people in the society, as they often feel unaccomplished and therefore assume that they will be the subject of the said populations (American Psychiatric Association, 2015). The origins of social phobia can be linked to “traumatic social experiences and social isolation” (Hudson118-120). People with social anxiety may usually experience extreme distress in some of these situations: when they are being introduced to other people, being teased or criticized, being the center of attention, meeting important people or authoritative people, being watched while doing something, having to announce something in a public situation, embarrassing easily, or making eye contact. Social anxiety may be selective, though. A person may have an extreme fear of one occasion, such as public speaking, but be perfectly comfortable in any other situation.
All of us at one point in our life have had a fear of something, whether it’s public speaking, trying something new for the first time, or even presenting just like we're all going to be doing. I'm sure most of us will be nervous and we try our best to get rid of that feeling. Some people have Social anxiety which is known as social phobia. It is the fear of social interaction with other people and of being judged and looked down upon. It can also be a fear of embarrassment. This leads to feelings of inadequacy, self-consciousness, and depression. For over three years, I have suffered from social anxiety disorder and shattered my social life in the process. Social anxiety disorder, also known as social anxiety or social phobia, is a psychiatric disorder where the sufferer has a fear of being in social situations, and is unable to interact with other people. This might appear as bashfulness to those that lack understanding of the problem. However, this is a problem that is much more severe than that. Social anxiety has the potential to ruin peoples’ lives. By fearing other people, you become unable to communicate with them, and therefore you are unable to live a normal, everyday lifestyle.
