“The Cask of Amontillado” Mood Literary Analysis Final Essay
Poe is credited for defining the modern short story. In “The Cask of Amontillado” by Edgar Allan Poe, he tells a tale of revenge. The story begins with Montresor, our narrator, stating that Fortunato, his enemy, has insulted him and how he seeks revenge. It continues by describing how Montresor leads Fortunato to his death by using reverse psychology and alcohol. “The Cask of Amontillado” conveys an eerie mood to its audience through dialogue and descriptive details.
Throughout this short story, Poe uses details and the character's true emotions create the eerie mood. “I continued, as was my won't, to smile in his face, and he did not perceive that my smile now was at the thought of his immolation.” In the beginning of this short story, Montresor states how he plans to kill Fortunato. During Montresor and Fortunato walk towards the wine cellular, Montresor comments on Fortunato’s well being. “‘You are a man to be missed... We will go back; you will be ill, and I cannot be responsible... “Enough,” he said; “the cough is a mere nothing; it will not kill me. I shall not die of a cough.’” Montresor uses reverse psychology to entice Fortunato to follow him through the crypt. Fortunato reply of how he states that he will not die from a cough shows the irony and suspenseful mood. The audience is completely aware of Fortunato's planned death, except for him. In conclusion, “The Cask of Amontillado” has an eerie and suspension mood that is clearly shown through the dialogue and detail. The suspenseful mood keeps the reader on their feet.
