Every day great minds around the globe plan strategically to better themselves or our society. Are you one of those people? To be able to determine this one must first define what strategic planning is. Strategic planning is a process that defines the manner in which people think about, assess, view, and create the future for themselves and others. With the analysis of three claims, the reader may learn how to strategically think themselves. In the short story “The Cask of Amontillado” the author portrays Montresor as a strategic planner through Montresor having a sensible plan, being open to risk, and acting as a nimble navigator. Throughout the short story, the main character Montresor always seems to be many steps ahead of his adversary Fortunato. An example of Montresor’s word choice would be his frequent references of niter. As Richard Benton has stated, “His emphasis on the presence of "nitre” allows Montresor to foment psychological terror” (p. 3) perhaps “with the intention of foreshadowing Fortunato’s doom by puckishly making a play on its metonymical relationship to gunpowder” (Dern 61-62). The truth in this statement lies in the story, because as Montresor and Fortunato moved deeper into the catacombs, Montresor would always mention how the “nitre” is getting thicker. After Montresor would mention the “nitre” he would make a suggestion to leave because of Fortunato’s illness, but because Montresor would also mention Luchesi, he would be forced to go deeper. Luchesi is another great example of Montresor Planning ahead of Fortunato because of the fact that Montresor had all of Fortunato’s strengths and weaknesses identified.
