“The Candidate” is a prime example to the inside of a campaign and the inside of an election. Elections do not only include the candidate themselves but the campaign manager, the supporters, the nominee’s family and the media crew. During “The Candidate” democratic nominee John McKay uses many strategies in order to “not” win his election for senator of California. Going into this campaign McKay was in hopes that he would not win the election, as time passed his view of the election changed as did his strategies.
Many of the campaign strategies used by John McKay include him saying what he wants, doing what he wants and going where he wants. While his campaign manager may have put a strict hold on that idea John McKay always found a way to put his personal touch to the situation at hand. In the beginning of the election he pushed hard to win over the union by greeting them and introducing himself as they got off of work, but towards the end he won over Mr. Starkey (almost like the union president) by disrespecting him (the union president thought he was joking). He makes Jarmen look like a liar by saying things along the lines of: “Why is Jarmen saying he’ll debate with me and he wont even show up?!”. Once he realized that a speech he gave moved the people he began saying it every place he went to. By doing this he was molding exactly what he stood for into their heads.
John McKay wanted his campaign to stray away from the usual machine type of politics. He wished to run his own campaign exactly how he pleased and it would work! When he was playing by the rules, being a nice guy and doing what his campaign manager told him to do he was receiving hardly any attention. As time progressed he became more of himself and this...

...s head around his victory and did not seem pleased. He was overwhelmed by the attention he was receiving and only wanted to be alone to speak with his campaign manager. This may reflect the goals of the major party because he may not achieve the goals he told the people he would do. McKay could fall through if he returns to acting the way he wants to.
“The Candidate” is the prime example of how an election is ran including the campaign strategies, the media, the debates, and the arguments. While Jarmens campaigning was not completely viewed throughout the movie it was clear he knew McKay was a threat. McKay’s idea of running a campaign included his personal touches of not listening to his campaign manager. Actually listening to what the people want and what they need seems to gain their attention and vote; this is the strategy that won McKay the election.
Tommy Douglas is known as a prolific politician but considering his contributions that is a huge understatement. He can be seen as a role-model for all generations to come. When Tommy Douglas was asked why he stayed with the NDP (National Democratic Party) when he could have been more successful with a more powerful party he replied “I have watched politicians for the last forty years drop their principles in order to get power only to find that those who paid and controlled the party which they joined prevented them from all the things they really believe in”. To the end of his days Tommy Douglas was true to himself, to ...
Grant foresaw what Mel would begin to see and greatly foreshadowed exactly what would happen in Canada. Grant felt that the wealthy, the ruling classes, Liberal party and the elite of Montreal and Toronto, were responsible for selling out of Canada. Mel shared these views and especially later in life the views of the liberal party which he had previously been
In the story “Inez” by Merle Hodge, Mr. James appears each collection day to fearlessly collect rent, or evict if needed, however, he demonstrates no such courage towards his wife as he does with his tenants . Though he sees an injustice in his wife’s demands, he would rather face an angry tenant and hungry children than fail in his duty toward her. The courage he demonstrates while collecting rent is not evident when facing his wife. Mr. James is a hypocrite for enabling his wife’s greed even though morally he knows it is wrong. A similar moral conflict is evident through the behavior and actions of some politicians seeking election. Politicians run for election, willing to say anything to get elected, though morally they may not agree with what they say.
John A. Macdonald became well known for the way he treated people. He was kind
Charles-Émile Trudeau was a Conservative, and several of his friends belonged to the Liberal Party. When his father’s friends were visiting at their Lac Tremblant cottage, Pierre was exposed to political debates and rivalries at an early age. He found politics interesting, but could not understand much of it. His father invested in successful several companies at the beginning of the...
In fact the place of Sir John A. Macdonald in this country was so large & so absorbing that it is almost impossible to conceive that the politics of this country, will continue without him. His loss overwhelms us. (Swainson, 149)
He had made the decision that if there was a lack of new information regarding the reapportionment, he would place a notice in a newspaper announcing his campaign. Originally, his career had him working on a school board. However, he knew it would be many years before any significant changes could be made to the educational system and he had made the decision to enter the political world.... ... middle of paper ...
In Central Texas, incumbent Republican Rick Green and Democrat rookie, Patrick Rose, ran a tight race for a seat inside the Texas House of Representatives. This close race was delineated inside the film Last Man Standing. Rick Green, a conservative Christian and law school graduate from the University of Texas, held the house seat since 1999. As the incumbent candidate up for re-election, Green held majority voter support through out the race. Rick Green rallied support in local events and church functions, asserting his faith to gain support. In Green’s opposition was young Democrat Patrick Rose. Rose was new to politics but eager to win the fight. Rose allowed himself to be portrayed as a new comer and young candidate, this played in his favor especially among women voters. Rose, a graduate from Stanford and the University of Texas, held the firm belief that this election could be won one voter at a time.
The Article 'The Permanent Campaign'; takes a look at the way the American political system has evolved over the years. When George Washington was president he did not campaign any before he was put in office. When he was in office he only made a few public appearances and when he did he didn't speak a word. During Washington's era political campaigning was considered undignified.
He invited Premiers from every province to Meech Lake to discuss the needs of Quebec in order to convince them to officially sign the constitution and merge with Canada. At first the ideas that came out of Meech Lake were welcomed with open arms and Mulroney was praised for his negotiating. That was until an ex-Prime Minister, Pierre Trudeau, published a piece of writing bashing Mulroney and calling him down for the stupidity and irrational deals made in the Meech Lake Accord. It is argued that Trudeau’s arguments on the negative aspects of the accord are what destroyed the Meech Lake Accord. Trudeau argued that Mulroney’s ideas would completely change Canadian federalism due to the change of the provincial and federal powers and would ruin Canada. Because of the change in public opinion that ensued after Trudeau voiced his thoughts, Mulroney and Trudeau were now on opposite sides of the argument, both fighting for two different visions of Canada. ...
William Lyon Mackenzie King was one of the greatest prime ministers in Canada, although he did not give a fascinating speech or had an exciting image and supported few radical policies . King’s opinions were very strong and would not be changed no matter what. No one could influence King and this was shown through his leadership during the Great Depression and the election in 1930.
...for equal rights. In some poems McKay even called for violent acts to change the laws, however, as an educated man, reason prevailed. As result he adopted religion, and his poetry, like himself became conflicted. Out of this confliction came some of the most powerful African American poetry in history. Claude McKay poured his soul onto to paper, and as a result, it seeps in to all who read it.

Campaigns are a significant part of the democratic process in American politics. Individuals who make decisions individually and interdependently characterize the democratic process. It aids decision making for the citizens and enables them come up with a summary political judgment based on how they view the different candidates. Justifying themselves that the upbringing of Canadian Pacific Railway(CPR) created the platform that made it possible for Canada’s first political scandal, that surrounded Macdonald. Yet, when looking back at Macdonald’s mistakes, we seem to forget that this was just simply how business was and is still done. “It was not the first time a politician fighting for the life of his government and public policy solicited financial support and it will not be the last” (SYMONS). Often, people will have a great idea but can’t get it out into the world. This is where investors come along. They support your idea and therefore support you, often giving you money to aid you with your future goal. The sad thing is, these investors usually want something back, and you're obliged to give it to them. This is just how business works. Macdonald was merely just doing business. When choosing who would get the coveted contract to construct the CPR he chose a company who first believed in and supported him. Being a good businessman should not be a reason as to why we shouldn’t keep him in the public
