The Brown Wasps
In Loren Eiseley’s Essay The Brown Wasps, Eiseley shows that humans and animals act in similar ways. He says that humans and animals cling to the things they know very strongly. Sometimes they even act as if nothing even changed. Humans and animals tend to want to return to things that they are familiar to as they grow older. Loren Eiseley shows how humans and animals try to cling or recreate an important or favorite place. This essay is about memory, home, places in time. Loren Eiseley does a great job describing the place that he is talking about to make the reader visualize and make them feel like they are there. Some examples are the old men, the brown wasps, the mice, the pigeons, the blind man, and even himself. He recalls his childhood in Nebraska and how the train stations used to be and how the pigeons would fly around waiting for people boarding the trains to feed them. Loren Eiseley once planted a tree with his father, when he was a boy and he acts like it has been there the whole time. All in all, through the use of the characters in Of Mice and Men, Steinbeck is able to highlight how isolation that is forced on individuals by society ultimately leads to one’s suffering. The overall message of the novel is that no single individual should be mistreated because of a mental issue, his or her race, his or her gender, or the fact that one may have a physical injury. It is everyone’s human right to be treated equally and respectfully. No one should ever feel alienated from his or her surroundings. Loneliness is something that no one can avoid. As the story comes to an end, the story brings to light different causes of isolation, particularly discrimination and preconceptions.

The children were expected to stay clean, and keep their clothes clean for the entire length of the train ride which could last for weeks at a time if they were not selected at one of the earlier stops. They were mistreated, and spoken to harshly while in the company of the chaperones on the orphan trains, and it was clear that they had no compassion for the children. While on the train the children were fed, but not very often. The children would go nearly twenty-four hours without eating, and when they ate they were given, “some crusts of bread and milk and an apple each” (Kline New York City 1929-2, p. 3). The children were not permitted to wander off away from the group whenever the train stopped, and if they did they would be punished. When the train reaches the destinations arranged by the Children’s Aid Society, the children are instructed to look their best, and behave well while being paraded in front of families. The older children knew that there was a chance that they would be selected because they would be capable of being put to work. When Dutchy says to Niamh, “You should make out all right, at least you won’t be breaking your back doing farm work” (Kline,The Milwaukee Train 1929, p. 3), it shows that he is aware of what may be in store for him. If selected you would go with your new family, and if not you would board the train and continue on until you found a new home. ‘Of Mice and Men’ is based on the experiences of a migrant farmer, set in 1930’s America. The characters are also symbolized as realistic people, but influenced by the issues and circumstances based on the Wall Street crash, the American Dream and being set after WWI. I empathies for these characters for the consequences of these historical events are what to have made ‘Of Mice and Men’ a tragedy in relation to loneliness.
The poem is launched by a protracted introduction during which the speaker indulges in descriptions of landscape and local color, deferring until the fifth stanza the substantive statement regarding what is happening to whom: "a bus journeys west." This initial postponement and the leisurely accumulation of apparently trivial but realistic detail contribute to the atmospheric build-up heralding the unique occurrence of the journey. That event will take place as late as the middle of the twenty-second stanza, in the last third of the text. It is only in retrospect that one realizes the full import of that happening, and it is only with the last line of the final stanza that the reader gains the necessary distance to grasp entirely the functional role of the earlier descriptive parts.
In An Old Man's Winter Night, the old man is in a houes by himself. He neither has anyone to talk to. All that is there for the old man is nature. He hears the the sounds of the branches and that is familiarity to him.
In The Rememberer, one of the main characters, Ben, has an epiphany where he realizes that humans are thinking way too much and have lost contact with their hearts. His epiphany makes him spiral into a depression, leading him to be described as a sad man. As the story progress on, Ben, drifts deeper into a depression until eventually killing himself. Ben changes into different animals to represent the different stages of his depression and how he loses contact with the human world. When he turns into the ape, this shows how be is becoming less of a man and more of a child. He reaches out to Annie and she sharply commands “No,” demonstrating the discipline you would teach to a child or animal (Bender 4).
