The Brink of War
In 1914, there were many things that placed Europe at the brink if war. Nationalism, militarism, imperialism, social darwinism, and Jingoes where five of the main forces that were pushing Europe to the brink of war. Another main force was the development of Alliance systems. These ideas and systems threatened the balance of power which could then cause a major war to break out. In Europe at the time, there were many ideas which were causing friction. Nationalism, which was the desire for a country was causing friction because people in old empires sought to be free. The leaders of these people would not be happy and a war would definitely break out. If they became free they would also need to take land from someone else and this again may cause a war and usually did. Another idea which was contributing to the shifts of power in Europe was Militarism.
This was when a country believed its power was reflected in its army. They believed that war was the right thing to do and that all countries needed to be ready for war. If a country felt they had a lot of power they would, no doubt, try to conquer a weaker neighbor or just any other country. Imperialism which was the countries want to build an empire was another reason. For a country to become an empire they would have to colonize and conquer other territories. This would easily start wars and it's not that hard to figure out why. A good example of this is Italy. They wanted to become an empire so they attacked a country which they thought was weaker then them(Abyssinia). This caused a war which in the end was won by Abyssinia. Another cause was the idea of social darwinism. This meant the survival of the fittest. The best would win and the weaker would parish.
The stronger country would attack weaker countries and in the end the weaker would usually lose. This caused a lot of tension just like militarism. The last of the ideas, was the idea of jingoes. These were people who lived for war. All they wanted was to go to war. Jingoes where very aggresive talkers and they caused a lot of friction between many countries. These ideas where some of the main reasons Europe was pushed to the brink of war.
The story of Gladiator takes place in Ancient Rome and contains intense action, great acting, and fantastic storytelling. Although most of this action drama is mostly fictitious, some certain events and characters appear in the history books.
The gladiators were not born athletes who had a mission in life to become warriors, most of them were normal men living a normal life on a farm located within the fringes of the Roman Empire, such as Moesia. These men had families and friend within their village and usually farmed to survive. They had little to no contact with people outside of their town and kept to themselves. This made them easy targets for the Roman armies to attack which was extremely common. As the Romans began their attack the men of a village usually sent their women and children off while they stayed to fight. Of course they stood no chance and were forced to surrender to be taken as Roman slaves. They would be forced to take the trip to Italy which usually took over fifty days. "Gladiator", comes from the latin word "gladius", for sword. They were primarily made up of slaves, criminals, prisoners of war or even volunteer free men. The crimes that could lead one to the arena included treason, robbery, and murder, among others. Some free men became gladiators of their own free will in hopes of gaining notoriety and patronage amongst the wealthy citizens. By the end of 50 BC almost half of the gladiators fighting in the Colosseum were free men.
A gladiators life was far from easy. Most were slaves, prisoners of war, or hardened criminals, therefore they were not free men. Often times they were trained and forced to take part in the events, hoping for their freedom if they were to conquer their grim fate and survived for a few years (wik). This was depicted in the most recent movie GLADIATOR. In this film Russel Crowe Maximus' starts out as an army general under Marcus Aurelius, until Commudus murders his own father out of spite for his fathers loyalty to Maximus and not him. He then inherits the title of king, and condemns Maximus to a gruesome fate as a slave/gladiator. Though this doesn't sound like the ideal life, to some at the time is was an appealing, so much so that some free men degraded themselves so they could battle in the games. Was it for basic living? Possibly but more than likely it was for the Fame and Prestige of a Gladiator. These free men were known as Professional gladiators.
Ancient Rome existed from 753 BC to 476 AD. Many people were a part of making Rome what it was, including gladiators, slaves, plebeians, patricians and many more. The gladiators were mainly slaves and plebeians who were forced to entertain crowds, including the rich society, so they would not rebel against their empire (this once happened when gladiators rebelled under the leadership of a Thracian from the nomadic tribes, Spartacus). These sources generally show the life of a gladiator because it gives an insight on how they would have lived their life in ancient Roman times.
1 - I believe that Eric Hobsbawm has the most convincing thesis because I agree with him. Each country at the time was on a “mad rampage” for resources and supplies. While conquering countries, they didn’t realize that they don’t have any right to take over places such as Africa where most people are unable to fight back and can’t do anything about it. If you think about it, all these countries can’t just take over the world, they will run into each other, which they end up doing so causing tension to build up over time. This tension can easily led to a war eventually.

Gladiators were sent to a ludus gladiatorious to be trained where abuse was common. A day there consisted of lifting weights and learning the art of death. They were trained according to physical attributes or skills. For example if one was to be a big, bulky man, one was trained as a brute. Smaller more agile ones were trained in the skills of cunning. There were also many more types of gladiators.
The first known gladiatorial combat in Rome took place at the funeral of a nobleman named Junius Brutus in 264 B.C.2 His sons Marcus and Decimus revived an ancient Etruscan custom of having slaves fight at the funeral of a great leader in the belief that such a sacrifice would please the gods. During the ceremony, three pairs of slaves were forced to fight to the death. In 216 B.C., twenty-two pairs of slaves fought at the funeral of a man named Marcus Lepidus. Sixty pairs of slaves fought when Publicus Licinius died in 183 B.C. These slave fighters were now known as bustiarii, or funeral men.3 By the time of Julius Caesar, any direct association with funerals and religion was gone, and these fighters, now known as gladiators, meaning swordsmen, were a powerful force in Roman politics. Much like today’s athletes gladiators competed with one another to decide a victor and is a form of entertainment for people spectating. But Gladiators competed much different than professional athletes do today. Gladiators were forced to fight for the entertainment of others and were considered slaves (“ The Roman Gladiator”). Gladiators did not just fight for friendly sport either they had to fight to the death. This made the gladiatorial games so exciting for the people watching. The people loved to watch others fight and the gore that they would see while the gladiators were fighting. Gladiator’s were men who became professional fighters specialising in fighting with weapons. Gladiator’s were known to fight in large purpose-built arenas for the public to view throughout the Roman Empire from 105 BCE to 404 CE (official contests).
One of the most common ways people became gladiators was from being a slave. Sometimes slaves were bought from a manager so they could become a gladiator. Then the manager would send the slave to a lanista school and there they would be trained by a lanista to learn how to fight, use weapons, and defend themselves like a gladiator. Although, some slaves were forced to become a gladiator. The reason most gladiators were once slaves is because if a slave disobeyed their owner, they would sometimes get killed. Archaeologists use new technology to discover gladiators’ bodies and the places they lived. A recent discovery presented a gladiator school which is the first one found outside of Rome, Italy. Archaeologists are still using their technology to unearth more about a gladiator’s life.
In ancient Roman times, the slaying of gladiators in fights to the death served as immense forms of entertainment for Roman civilians. Though such practices may seem barbaric today, the institution of the arena for brutal sports is one of the defining features of ancient Roman civilization. The gladiatorial spectacle was put on by the wealthy of the community as a means of displaying their power. According to Professor Kathleen Coleman, gladiators were, “subjected to a rigorous training, fed on a high-energy diet, and given expert medical attention. Most gladiators were captured soldiers from Roman wars, slaves, or prisoners. Unsurprisingly, lives of new gladiators were harsh and unpleasant. After the Roman Empire decided they would be gladiators, they would have been sent to a gladiator school where they would have been given an exam by a doctor. If they were fit enough to fight they would have been assigned a specific gladiator job based on their size and strength. The recruits, or novicius, would go through initial training which focused on fitness and their assigned gladiator type’s specific fighting techniques often by former gladiators. After the recruits finished initial training they would have been called Tirones and were marked with tattoos to make it harder to escape. Though many the new gladiators were put in shackles and were no allowed to talk, all gladiators were fed three meals a day. They were also given medical care when needed as well as fairly comfortable housing. After some experience gladiators were treated better. Once a seasoned gladiator, they were given massages, hot baths, and women. Gladiators were expected to fight between five and three times a year and were given a public banquet before each game. They were expected to die honorably, and if they did not they were put to death in terrible ways.
