Introduction
Effective communication is one of the most important things to maintain a happy relationship. Communication will help to create a better atmosphere and to know what are the interests, thoughts and feelings of your loved one. All romantic relationships need a lot of communications from both sides. The main factor is interpersonal communication, which couples are able to overlap environments and create a relationship. We reviewed the movie “The Breakup” and have found the concepts of Integrating, differentiating, and terminating. This movie shows how ineffective communication can dissolve a relationship. The lack of communication is the main factor why Brooke and Gary break up. This couple tends to rely on other people instead of trying to solve their problems talking to each other. They avoid talking because every time a new conflict will begin. In many of the scenes the couple creates big arguments from small issues. In this paper, we will explain the scenes of the movie that can be compared to the interpersonal communication concepts.
Description of the Interpersonal Communication
The first concept we choose to write on is initiating. According to the book Looking Out Looking In, initiating is the first stage of a relationship, and it means to show interest in another person and to give signals that shows interest building up some kind of relationship. (Alder, 2012) In the movie one of the scenes where the concept of initiating is displayed is when Brooke is staring at a baseball game and Gary was sitting near her. Suddenly Gary offers Brooke a hot dog, after insisting several times she finally gets the hot dog. After the baseball game Gary invites Brooke to a date.

She only wanted for him to do things by himself, not him asking her to do them. When he finally thought things it was too late, Brooke was tired of always having the whole responsibility of the relationship. In order to maintain a relationship both of the partners need to communicate effectively, this will help to solve any kind of problem they can have.

This film ties in with Interpersonal Communications very well as it portrays its message of poor communication very well. Many of the communication issues are brought up in the article “Sex, Lies, and Conversation by Deborah Tannen.” Tannen states that men and women argue with one another over communication which leads to marital problems and divorce. Men and women have different viewpoints on communication. Women see bad communication as the one of the major reasons for divorce. Also the way men and women communicate are very different. Men are very different than women they do not like to communicate as much like women. Men don’t talk about their problems and women love to talk about them. Communication is seen as one major cause leading to a relationship failure. When couples get married the women is always looking for a good comuincator.

Therefore, helping the couple in communication will began to reshape and reform new clear boundaries within the spousal subsystem and parental subsystem.
