Spencer, The “Brave” Bravestone
Spencer Gilpin is a young nerdy guy who gets addicted to video game. He is portrayed as a thin and coward guy in the beginning of the movie. Before he gets transported into Jumanji, he lives his life with full of anxieties. The way he uses antiseptic after touching things and wears raincoat when it does not rain explains the worries and anxieties he experiences in everyday life. Moreover, he is the student who gets most worried of the punishment among the other students.
When he gets sucked into Jumanji world, he immediately changes into Dr. Bravestone, a character in the game who is a brave and strong archeologist also explorer. This is the beginning process of the simulation of Dr. Bravestone. He learns the avatar's strength and weakness and try to get adapted into his new body which is totally different with his real body. As Baudrillard (1994) explains, simulation happens when all reality has been replaced with representation or symbols and signs, and there are no more obvious boundaries between them. In Spencer's case, the simulation completely happens when he starts to get adapted with his avatar. Oberon, which is in the end of the movie, to attached to Bethany’s identity. The simulacrum, in which (Boundas 1990) defines as “an image without resemblance”, creates a new identity of Bethany based on the identity of Dr. Oberon, which is an unreal character or individu. This can be seen through the scene when Bethany asks her friend to go backpacking with her in nature. Her friend seems unsure with Bethany’s decision and questions her if she is fine or not. This implies that Bethany, before get sucked into Jumanji, never did that kind of thing. This means that Dr. Oberon’s identity has become one with her
