He changed certain parts in the book to not make children scared of what had actually happened during the war. He changed it to a fable to help kids really understand and get the children’s thoughts and meaning of the war. He wanted children to learn about the history and why it all happened to just the Jews.
Describe the relationship between Bruno and Gretel? (15 pts.) Bruno sometimes refers to Gretel as a hopeless case or “trouble”. Bruno and Gretel have very different opinions on things. Gretel is very into the Nazis and Holocaust that is happening in Germany,
Bruno and Shmuel both were the same age and were forced to live in Germany which they were very similar and relatable to each other. I think that the book would not be as effective if he used adults in the place of the children, I think this because children can relate to each other and interact with each other in a different way than adults can.

Bruno’s mood in the beginning of the book is very happy that he is living in Berlin with his best friends and family in their big house. Bruno’s mood changes drastically when he is told that him and his family have to move. His mood changes again at the end of the novel because he meets a new friend that he goes to see everyday at the fence. His mood also changes when he helps Schmoel find his father.

About 11,000,000 people died during the Holocaust, which was organized by Adolf Hitler. Hitler was Chancellor of Germany from 1933-1945 (12 years). There were about 23 main concentration camps during the Holocaust. Auschwitz was one of them. 6,000,000 of the 11,000,000 people that died were Jews. Shmuel could’ve been one of those Jews. Bruno could’ve been one of the other 5,000,000. The book might not have been true, but it was based on the truth. The movie, The Boy in the Striped Pajamas is not as good as the book, because the book is more detailed, and interesting.
I really enjoyed this book because it was not a story about the middle of the Second World War. Instead it was right before, when things were not as bad, but they were bad enough. It helped me understand how people lived before the hatred grew and how families were torn apart right from the beginning. Likewise, it gave me hope to see that not everything was destroyed and that some people were able to escape. I would recommend this book more for boys but for girls as well, between the ages of 13-15. Even though Karl’s age throughout the book is 14-17, the novel was written more for my age group. Once again this was an amazing book that I could not put down, and I am sure many others were not able to either.

Bruno lives with his parents and his older sister, Gretel. They live in a five story house in Berlin. He goes to school and has three best friends that he goes on adventures with. One day he comes home to find their maid packing his things. They move to a three story house in Germany because his dad was promoted and needs to be closer to his work.

Children have often been viewed as innocent and innocent may be a nicer way to call children naive. Since children’s lives are so worry free they lack the knowledge of how to transition from being a child to becoming an adolescent. Their lack of knowledge may be a large part of their difficulties growing up, which could be a few rough years for many. In books like the boy in the striped pajamas the story is told from the point of view of a little boy, this way we get a full view of how innocent he is. In this book the writer shows the reader first hand how a child viewed the holocaust and how his innocence cost him his life. Then in books like the perks of being a wallflower Charlie is a teen whom is struggling with the transition from being a child to becoming an adolescent. In this book the writer gives a first hand look at how difficult it can be to transition into an adolescent. Charlie has many difficulties in this book; he is in search of his identity and how to fit in.

Such distortions allow the author to evoke the audience’s emotion, portray the Holocaust to younger readers and communicate humans’ capacity for brutality and apathy. This is achieved by Boyne through the exaggeration of the innocence of Bruno, the misrepresented content of the novel as well as the distinctive voice of youth. Narrative, in The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas by John Boyne, is therefore presented as a device that distorts aspects of truth in order to reveal. However, in the end, it is the choice of the reader as to whether they will consider the narrative to be a ‘fable’ which reveals a message or an actual source of knowledge and truth.

To begin, the two boys’ relationship relates to Knapp’s stages of relational development. First, the first two stages, initiation and experimentation, can be seen when Bruno first meets Shmuel. The two introduce themselves and Bruno notices the number on Shmuel’s uniform. They also both find out that they are eight-years-old. Next, the relationship also demonstrates the intensifying stage. Particularly, it shows the separation test. Even though Bruno and Shmuel are not able to play together, Bruno still thinks about Shmuel. Furthermore, the integration stage is also shown.
The ‘feeling’ of the text can be deduced from the tone of the words that are used. The beginning and the middle of the text uses ‘difficult’ words arranged next to each other. Examples include “break, blow, burn, and make me new” and “o 'erthrow me, and bend”. This could imply that the persona is bitter or dissatisfied with the current situation because it is not the one he is supposed to be in. However, towards the end, a feeling of hope is evident in the use of the words “enthrall” and “ravish”.
